Lets go first, anyways at its launch I was def younger. I only had a kindle at the time so I really couldn't play it. Still had the kindle when it shut down due to covid. Covid was horrible, not only did it shut down several cool things, we were locked apart and this Minecraft earth was GONE.
Thanks

it wasnt that great tbh
So sad how minecraft earth just got popular then died, I remember those days...
Minecraft earth was so cool when it first came out, it just got stale rather quickly. Had they put more time into it, it might’ve done well. But at the same time, they were busy adding bees to Minecraft, so it makes sense.
Minecraft employees dying after a long fiscal year of adding two mobs and a new block
@@nezzled 🤣
@@nezzled hey give them a break! Those mobs had at least 2 days of work put in them. No more than 8 tho.
They were being *busy bees* adding in the bees!
Yep it got really stale real fast. Minecraft earth implemented collect-athon elements and real world waiting(such as COC builds), but most players like myself just wanted to build in AR.
Quite odd to see Grian & Mumbo's dual video about Minecraft Earth, knowing that months later the game shut down. It's better to have a good archive of it stored in one of the top Minecraft content creators
What?
@@OKayD3N it's good to have a video having all the information on the game
@@azeria1 yeah it’s just kind of stupid
@@JesseFuches Why, Jesse!?
@@azeria1 Hey, Ben!
it's worth mentioning for Pokemon GO- when the pandemic hit, they offered free "Remote Raid Passes" and other items, allowing you to interact with raids from any position- greatly reducing the need to leave the house. They also sold similar items in their shop, meaning they made a LOT of money from people trying to quarantine
RAID SHADOW LEGENDS passes
(haha very funny joke)
I think a lot of people forget they did actually offer remote experiences. Most notably, they drastically increased the spawn rate of tappables and completely removed adventures from the spawn pool. They began offering adventures crystals at readily available rates, and offered rubies (the premium currency) via daily logins.
My honest speculation for the game's downfall is because of a lack of monetization. You could very easily walk around for an hour and get around $5 worth of currency so it didn't feel compelling to actually buy anything.
The marketing for the game... it wasn't really there post launch. While people were hyped, nobody knew it released.
The customer service. It literally just didn't exist. I got regular monthly updates that a representative would read my ticket. I still get those emails funny enough.
Yeah, especially at a time when video game companies were booming as we all had way too much free time on our hands, that was a missed opportunity. Such a shame that MC Earth was yet another failed spinoff like Story Mode (whose moral of the story was make them yourself instead of having a totally-stable third party company do it for you, and stands as an example of why physical media > digital)
Imagine how cool it would be if you could just create and see public builds that anyone could admire while walking down the street. It might’ve needed some moderation but that would’ve been a game changer.
the only solution to the moderation would be making it so that the mods have to review your build, and if they determine its not inappropriate, they'll make it public
It was funny when he said 95% p****es
I just commented mentioning my house is connected to a bike path. I'd have made some beautiful builds for passers by to see
To me it was incredibly promising and had interesting concept. I think it's the better Minecraft game to Dungeons because of how it translates the freedom and creativity that exists in the idea of Minecraft instead of a linear progression story roguelike system.
Edit: Not gonna lie, the fact that you couldn't actually descend into the adventure levels REALLY bugged me lmao, they really couldn't just make them ground level
Eh at least Dungeons was an actual game
In my opinion, the way they implemented the Minecraft mechanics didn't mesh at all with the GPS gimmick. It felt like a desperate attempt at mimicking Pokémon Go's success.
The Pokémon formula worked with the GPS, the Minecraft formula is completely out of place
@@DazedRose115 and at least dungeons continues to exist despite that critique.
I liked parts. Reminded me of that hololense demo from back when. Wish it wasn't sunsetted so early. Loved the mini build plates.
@@test-cd1vz indeed, if they just sold Minecraft AR and let us just build in our houses with no grinding, it would have been amazing.
i miss minecraft earth. it very clearly had so many cool ideas and love and care put into it. they should give it another try and relaunch.
Wouldnt work.
I think they should try relaunch Story Mode tbh

I hope one day when AR has advanced (and AR glasses become more consumer friendly) that we can see some sort of revival of Minecraft Earth. I really think that the AR aspect of it was cool and had great potential
I approve this message 👍
I hope pokemon go will also make a comeback with ar glasses
Knowing mojang they would ban anyone who made the idea

I actually really liked Minecraft Earth, and even signed up for the early access beta. I was really sad when they finally announced it would be shutting down. It felt like it had so much untapped potential.
Yeah
Minecraft earth was so cool at first when it first came out, then it just got boring quickly. There could have been more with it however didn't really happen, and I never got to play it but heard about it. Thanks for making this video.
I remember thinking that Minecraft Earth was one of the coolest things ever when they first announced it, only to never see or hear from it ever again. Here's hoping that they add all of those mob variants into the main game sometime though, as they actually look really cool and I'd hate for those neat designs to go to waste.
oh man i remember minecraft earth, i still have the app on my phone, a year and a half after it shut down, i still just remember playing it by myself while at home, doing the little adventures and just having fun, was a nice calm time. i hope they bring it back, even tho theres almost a 100% chance they wont, it was very fun while it lasted
It was a cool idea, and I remember being really excited for it. It is unfortunate that it got shut down, even though I was excited I didn't actually play it too much..
I do hope they revisit it sometime, it would be cool to see it get revived. Though, I really don't see that happening.
i remembering playing minecraft earth because it was free and i really liked it, i hope it gets revived too
you can still play this game thanks to the Project Earth team! It's a bit messy and buggy, but it works and is having progress in the development

I played it for a bit but it always felt incredibly grindy, like it just wanted you to buy the microtransactions to do anything. I wanted to build stuff but I was stuck with a tiny build plate unless I was gonna pay for a bigger one. It felt like it had the potential to be good, but was just never finished and got too greedy.
It was a mobile "game". What else did you expect? All mobile "games" ever amount to is a microtransaction money pit.
I played it for a few weeks and enjoyed it. Mostly just the adventure mode. I remember it being repetitive after awhile, my biggest issue was a Ruby wall I kept hitting. I do miss the game from time to time and wish it was still around. The similar Harry Potter game met a similar fate.
Genuinely played it at every opportunity. The game was awesome and introduced a fresh perspective to Minecraft while also pushing AR technology even further ahead. Hope to see it back someday.
if you want a fresh perspective to minecraft simply install mod packs.
mods have kept me playing the game since an alpha build in 2010. vanilla is as boring as a sack of rocks.
@@darkshadowsx5949 i don’t think so, i still find enjoyment building things in survival having to go out and grind more blocks in order to build what i want, that was also the coolest part of minecraft earth for me, being able to build with my friends, i never enjoyed grinding out ores and getting op equipment which is probably also why i liked earth so much because creativity was a core aspect of it, it’s a shame the pinning builds idea was never implemented because that honestly would have saved the game, being able to go around a town and see all the builds people have left would be so much fun, it’s sad they did nothing with it

I remember having Minecraft Earth before actually having Minecraft Java, It was so fun exploring different custom-made places during the pandemic. I was pretty sad when they released the message revealing it was going to be shut down... but oh well.
I remember playing a few times and even with my brothers. The thing that got me though is the fact I dont get out of my house much and when I do, I'm usually not on my phone as I'm busy shopping or something. I didnt even realize it had shut down which is a bit sad. If they had been able to make it more like the trailer, it probably would have been more fun
Great video! Keep up the amazing work!
I absolutely loved this game, I played almost from its the release date in Australia. The whole concept was awesome, and the actual gameplay improved update to update. Great video.
I hope they keep the files for this and re make it for Ar at world scale bc it would be so cool to just have someone’s build next to there houce

The hollow knight music really caught me off guard but like the use of it in this video, keep up the great work!
Minecraft Earth was sick. the gameplay, general aesthetics and music were great, so were all the little collectables they added
shame to see it go so soon
I remember coming back to Minecraft Earth. Only 2 months later the message that they were planning to shut it down came and the final era of quests. Though short lived I had a lot of fun and even got some bedrock items out of the quest line. If only it was still here.
My daughter and I had this, but she passed away in June of 2019 prior to that we had several builds. But I took one of our builds out to her grave site, I placed it next to her and played Minecraft with her one last time
I love how greenpath is just constantly playing in the background, the hk music is so good for everything
I only got to play it for about the last two months of it's life, when I finally got a phone that could play it.
As a casual game I quite enjoyed it. There was something relaxing to collecting and building in vr. It's a shame the game was shut down so soon. It had a lot of potential and room to improve.
As for problems, the only two that come to mind are: it crashed more than I'd like, and not being able to go down in adventures without messing with the camera.
I discovered when the camera was covered up, it would wait for it to be open again. If you moved the phone around before opening it, your placement in vr didn't change, so you could be higher up and "desend" repeatedly.
Honestly i also didnt even knew the game was out...i guess this is a good way to show how advertising a game is a such a crucial thing
Bro, it's so disappointing that the game had shut down, me and my brother were building thing all the time and we've had amazing time. Now, seeing all the work of ours be deleted, is like a punch to the gut😓. Also, the pandemic didn't really change much. Like we were still going outside time to time, just not with other people, so the tappables could still be easily collected. The thing is that PEOPLE DIDN'T SEE OTHER BUILDS ANYWAY so the pandemic didn't really change anything when you thing about it for a moment. *Sorry for typos if I made any*
One of the issues was also that it simply released too early, I wanted to play it, but my phone was simply too old. I was able to play Pokémon Go without issues, as it did have a non-AR mode, Minecraft Earth required that your phone was compatible with Google AR services, which left many behind
I really loved this game, I played it during beta before it was internationally available on my Android phone and iPad. I've been waiting for some time for a game like this. It's sad to see it shut down after a short time.
Easily this was the best AR game so far, the only one I kept going back to. None of the others take advantage of 3D space properly, and it was an actual game with fun mechanics. I miss it deeply.
I love how these videos bring up topics and ideas that everyone forgot about or never would have thought of yet are always interesting and relevant. The only reason I knew mc earth shut down is because I saw the Grimm and mumbo collab and wanted the game just to be disappointed. Keep up the good content👍👍👍
I was looking forward to this game for so long. I remember checking the app store every few weeks too see if I could play it though it always told me my device wasn't compatible.
I was actually really excited to try this game when I found out it was a thing, unfortunately it was already in the process of being sunsetted so I didn't get too long to play. 😔
I think PoGo survived because it had already had enough time to mature and gain features that could be altered to suit a pandemic situation.
At launch, PoGo only had three basic mechanics: Catch pokemon, hatch eggs, battle gyms. All of which required physically going places. Catching pokemon could be done in a very limited sense if you were fortunate enough to live near a pokestop to replenish items.
By the time of the pandemic, PoGo had added Raid battles, Team Go Rocket battles, Go Battle League, Adventure Sync, and a host of daily and weekly triggers for items and whatnot. Raids were altered to add remote raiding with limitations (as well as some temporary bonuses that have yet to go away). Team Go Rocket gained hot air balloons so that players who could not get out would have a slow, but steady stream of Rocket members to fight (the feature is still in place). Go Battle League had its distance requirement per battle set temporarily removed (a feature that never made any sense to begin with and has officially been eliminated since), and Adventure Sync made it possible for players to gain walking distance while (relatively) stationary by counting steps (or other phone shakes) while the game was closed.
If the pandemic occurred when PoGo was still in its larval state with only the first two generations of pokemon partially released, it very likely would have died from lack of playability and lack of interest just the same as Minecraft Earth.
I didn't even know this existed!! this sounds super dope!
I loved it and hope there will be fanservers and some decompilation project
I remember playing this when it came out of my country (PH), I enjoyed the first few hours but then it can be difficult to collect blocks since it didn’t really spawn around my town. And then the pandemic came so it basically cut its lifespan shorter.
It released for me in the middle of winter, so that pretty much killed any desire I had to play it. I just never picked it back up even when it was warmer
Understandable
I remember getting into the beta, loving the game, and playing it until it shutdown. It sucks that not a lot of people got to experience the game the way I did.
Oh i played it too, the novelty held up for abt 10 minutes and then i got bored and pretty much never played again… As u mentioned in the video, the ability to see others creations definitely would have been a game changer, atleast for me… well done video!!
I hope they bring it back at some point. That game had major potential and probably would have succeeded had covid not happened.
succeeded if it had compatibility with the wider range of phones
if they bring it back vr/xr it will have massive potential
No it failed because there’s no creative freedom. Why gather resources and save up blocks just to build prefab structures that nobody else will even see. The missed the mark at every turn.
Covid had nothing to do with it. Its just a bad excuse to close it. Pokemon Go had its best year since 2016 during covid.
Clarification on PoGo’s covid situation! During lockdown they gave free drops and remote raid passes, meaning the game was still very much alive during lockdown. When lockdown ended, they implemented a free daily incense that only works when you’re moving to combat the habits built up during lockdown.
Pokemon go only lived because of its brand name. Every other major ar game died or ate those losses.
They added “remote raid passes” but you had to pay for them after you used the 3 free ones. Basically the one a day free pass was traded for a “pay only” pass. Even then you had to use discord to coordinate raids. Needless to say, the did the bare minimum and really exploited their fan’s inability to go outside, by paywalling a core feature.
I think its also important to note that Pokemon Go was built by a company that previously made AR games and had ~3 years to grow before the pandemic. Minecraft earth was built by the mojang team with the leftovers from an scrapped hololense project. They had 2-3 months to work on the game before covid hit.
Its a shame because the devs for Earth openly talked with the community on discord. They were very open about what they were working on, as well as issues and challenges the team was facing concerning certain features (such as public buildings). They even did multiple Q&As. Honestly if it wasn’t for the pandemic, I could’ve seen this game garnering more support in the long run.
i used to play mc earth for hours at a time. i remember just loading the game up at my house just filled the game screen with builds. it was so much fun. i was so sad when it shut down. i really wish they would try and relaunch it.
I was so hyped for this after the announcement and never heard of it again. I forgot it existed until this video.
I can remember when it was revealed. Thought it was cool but my phone wasn’t compatible. In 2021 I got a new phone that was compatible, but that only lasted a few months because of the sunset event. I still have the Minecraft Earth beta skin from before the game launched though, which is cool.
I actually played it almost as soon as it came out for my region. Loved the game to bits, probably because I didn't know about its existence until I saw a popup ad for it and downloaded it.
I played that game almost every day I was completely devastated when I sae the sunset update was announced :(
It was fun to play. even up until the end, however buggy as stated. Also item collection was slow. But it was one of the apps I used to motivate me to get out of the house and get some exercise.
Thanks for the video!
I remember being super excited to play this but unfortunately it was never released in my country
4:46 is responsible for making me throw this channel into the trash
I remember playing it every single time I was in the backseat of a car and I really hope they can release it in the future when the pandemic is fully gone.
I could just imagine finding random minecraft builds on abandoned building, forests, or even oceans. That would be absolutely game changing.
I remember seeing the announcement trailer, and the I saw mention of it here and there, and didn't even know it was out. What a shame though, it seemed like a really cool idea.
my least favorite part was how gimmicky it was. I wanted to build epic cool things that I could scale up and show other people. If I recall correctly however, the scaling thingy was really buggy and limited. Having to go out and about to collect few resources at a time just to slowly build something was more than annoying. I get it though, that type of thing isnt for everyone. Woulda been cool if there was some kind of creative mode that let players really do what they wanted to. Too bad the software itself was just an absolute mess though, cause I dont even think unlimited and easy creativity woulda saved it
To increase the scale of your plot you had to pay gems (or ruby's? I don't remember how were they called), and it was a little pay2play.
Everyone saying it failed because of COVID or anything else is absolutely wrong. What you said is the core of why this game didn’t work. It’s Minecraft but without any creative freedom, the main reason most people play the game
Literally the only reason Minecraft Earth stayed in my mind was because of the mob votes, because they included the Moobloom and Glow Squid.
Man I was looking foward to this but I had no idea it was even launched
I loved it. I had to get a new tablet, and that had no ar, so I was waiting until I could get an ar device, and when I finally did, ME had been deleted.
7:30, i bet the lawyers capped that. Don't want that edgy edgelord kiddy placing a swastika in the middle of the city.
Regarding the game itself, i don't play P2W games. And i didn't have an Android device capable of running the game anyways.
Definitely the biggest issue was the slow launch, I waited for awhile for it to become available in my country I just forgot about it and never heard of it again, they didn't even try to make ads or remind people about it, they just let it fail
I was really excited for Minecraft Earth. I genuinely thought it hadn't come out yet though. I didn't really keep up with any development for it or really look at the details, but I keep seeing trailers, and announcements for it here and there and was like, I'll have to check this out when it comes out. I even remember when Minecraft RUclipsrs Grian and Mumbo Jumbo did a mini travel series playing Minecraft earth, but I was under the impression that it was a development beta version they used and that it wasn't actually out yet. I remember trying to download it at the time too and couldn't find it in the appstore or at least available in my country (The US so I was kinda surprised). Next thing I knew I saw posts saying it was gonna be taken down and that apparently it has been up for years. I just wish I had the chance to check it out when it came out.
The reason I think Pokemon Go succeeded where Minecraft Earth didn't is that Niantic slowly but steadily added ways for players to interact with the game world even during a pandemic. The best examples I can think of this are the daily spawns that occur regardless of location, and the team go rocket balloons, that could even host Giovanni. They also added a couple features as the pandemic was lessening to encourage players who stopped to get back into it, one notable example being the recent Daily Adventure Incense, which spawns a bunch of pokemon as long as you are walking, but can still work in rural areas, and can even encounter the Galarian Bird legendary trio.
Minecraft Earth, as far as I remember, did none of those things, and mostly just hoped players wouldn't forget about it. But when a game stops being played for any reason then players are unlikely to pick it back up again. Also it would help if they put money towards marketing the game. Other than near launch, I never once saw any advertising for it. I get pokemon go ads pretty regularly.
The thing that killed it most was the grind you had to put in imo. My first thought was me and some friends firing tnt cannons or bows at each other in room scale but after about maybe a week or two of playing I had only two tnt if I remember. It just wasn’t worth the grind for that. Probably can get a better experience in vr now anyways
Can confirm. QuestCraft is a Java VR mod that is really fun and immersive. And the fact you can play in the same Java servers with your friends make it even better. Maybe Minecraft wasn't made for AR anyway, VR just translate better from the classic gameplay
I did play the game a few times and it was cool, but felt very unfinished, plus I am a person who hates having to travel around to places to collect stuff when I could just sit at my desk and play the main game. It is a cool idea but was ruined by many things.
Cause it literally was unfinished
I heard about the game that it will release someday but never knew anything about it after and forgot about it and just now remebered this game existed
It's wild, I never even knew about this happening, completely passed me by
I was actually extremely let down when I heard that Minecraft earth was shutting down. I really wanted to play the game and I even got a new phone hoping that it would be compatible with Minecraft earth. It sounded awesome and it shattered my heart to see such a thing just be discontinued.
7:46
don't worry, much more of it would be swastikas
For me I used Minecraft Earth as a little creature collector and had fun building my little irl chunk habitat for my various rare collected variants of Minecraft mobs. The sounds were relaxing.. they moved and acted normally just like java edition creatures..
idk it was a relaxing little artsy collecting game with normal Minecraft ambience which I find comforting and nostalgic.
It sucked logging in one day and seeing it's shutting down.. I just deleted it and removed it from my mind as I had no control over it going away.
Was nice while it lasted...
7:25 You forgot about the peniswastikas.
I was really into Minecraft Earth, but I never got to play it because my phone at the time wasn't compatible. I'm very sad about it.
There is actually a revival project called "project earth" on github, but it ceased development because mojang contacted the devs to make them stop (copyright stuff). There is still a community on the project but its very buggy. The basics work, like the tapables on a blank map.
Project Earth got killed by mojang
@dubl33_27 yeah, i sayed that.
I remember like 3 months before it shutdown I got hooked to it for some reason. I would play it in my living room right after my online school day was over. I miss that game
Crazy vid, i liked the part where he said "It's tapping time"
I remember making apple accounts in other countries to get this game early when it was in being rolled out to select regions and it was so much fun! I feel like if they relaunched it now it would be a success but it would take a miracle for this game to see the light of day again.
Something that people seem to forget about even more so than the game itself is that they released real life products you could buy as boosters for your game. I only got to use them a few times before the game’s shutdown but that was still pretty infuriating.
At least the little booster figures look cool.
When you had those battles where you have to shoot from down below one of the things I like to do is go upstairs if you have a second floor and set that up there and then go down to your bottom floor and that's how you get inside of the room
I remember everyone in Germany in my train looking at my phone seeing me play Minecraft IN REAL LIFE (I used an VPN to play it before every other human being in Germany so no one knew about the game)
Anyway MICROTRANSACTIONS yes you can run away multiple days and never get so much as by just spending a big amount of money. This was a HUGE deal breaker for me but I really liked the game and hoped for performance updates and new features.
This was so fun bro omg
I completely forgot this game existed until you mentioned it.
Oh no, I'd love to play it. I didn't know it was out. I was waiting for it and then I forgot.
Do a vid about minecraft story mode next, that game had a lot of memories for me
I need this back its so good
i never even knew it came out. i was literally waiting for a finished build of the game to be released for forever. i guess my wait will never be over
Me and my friends were so hyped up for Minecraft: Earth. But I never seemed to get any resources on minecraft earth, played it for maybe a week, but all i had to show for was a little hut. After that, i forgot i even had the game on my phone, and never thought of it till now. My friends stopped playing it after an hour or so, just because it was so stale. Very saddening to see it fail do badly.
I loved the functions!
I hope i make a app similar soon! :(
You should do something similar with Story Mode and Minecraft Dungeons, especially since I don't know how much longer Dungeons will be around considering the dwindling player numbers, the lack of youtubers covering the game and the lackluster updates the game has been receiving (I mean for goodness sake, a tower climber where you select items for every floor but the items and floors aren't even random?)
Plus, you needed quite a higher end phone to be able to play it as most cheaper phones did not come with AR integrations at the time which really limited the user base.
It's so funny that you just have the Hollow Knight music from Greenpath haha, brings back memories 🥲
Dude stop, you're bringing back the memories that I can't make anymore :(
This wouldve been a very cool game if you could build stuff around town. Like if it looked like full size builds in the AR, like putting a huge TNT block against a wall in the store, or a full sized tree in a park, or just the expected random blocks placed everywhere by a ton of different people, etc. Hopefully something like that will be possible in the future, when we have good AR goggles, because thats kinda's what is needed for something like that to be possible. edit: oh i just realized that was what they planned on adding when they first marketed the game. thats sad that it never came to be.
I still remember playing it and walking to an adventure at the city centre expecting other people to be there, but I just did it alone, standing there awkwardly with my overheating phone...
Oh my god I remember playing this game. IT WAS SO FUN IN MY OPINION. This is slightly bc I never really experienced Pokémon go and was new to AR. (Now into vr stuff)
completely forgot about this game till i just saw your video
It was kinda fun, got me outside riding my skateboard more. Sure it had some missing features the trailer implied, but it still had charm.
I loved this game so much. Was so sad when they announced closing this down. I would have played this for many more years.
I remember minecraft earth. The release was strange, somehow i was able to participate in the android beta, but it wasn’t available in my country to that date. It was one of the last countries to release the earth, never was assigned for a beta phase. But i could still download it without changing my country location. I played it some months, but it boring since i had noone to play it with. But i never knew it was shut down.
I still remember when Minecraft Earth came out and i couldn't play because my old phone didn't have AR support.
When I got a new phone that would support the game I saw it would take months for Earth to come in my country so I just gave up
3:43 yes you could, i always started the adventures on the first floor then walk down the stairs and play in the living room
