This was one of the greatest teams ever to visit our shores.

Simply the best. If anything this helped to end apartheid, proved by the African support for the Lions.
You need to understand Africa if you disagree.
It's about the rugby and the Lions were utterly amazing.

I think what helped to end Apartheid was NZ having enough and stopping tours from 1985, also the international pressure and isolation was very intense , I would agree that rugby isolation , exemplified by the absence of the Boks in 1987 and 1991 world cups , had indelible impact and the Bok management were scrambling and even meeting with ANC officials

Remember their controversial 99 call by Willie-John McBride!

They were the best. I was 13 years old when they toured South Africa.

I was incredibly privileged - as a Rooinek working in the Western Transvaal - to have travelled all the way to PE (by train!) and seen the amazing third test match. I'd seen the second test at Loftus and later the fourth one at Ellis Park. In the last one, I remember Fergus Slattery running up to Max Baise - who's in the video, but actually didn't ref the PE game - and accusing him of being a cheat as he disallowed an obvious try (you didn't have to be lipreader to know what he said) that would have won the game for the Lions, and Hannes Marais being carried off on shoulders at the end of the game as it was a draw.
But in defence of the Boks, having played rugby in the Eastern Free State and seen the results of the Boer wars (and got a few bruises once the opponents realised I was a pom) I have great sympathy for them, although I have to admit that it took me ten minutes to love Free State rugby but ten years to love Bok rugby - in fact I supported them against the 1980 Lions!

The Bok selectors panicked and selected far too many players whilst the Lions had a settled team led well by Willie-John McBride.
