Large trucks carrying sand from the mining area 15km from the port have to travel a long distance and spend a lot of money on petrol, actually making very little money a day because of the rising price of diesel.
Carrying sand to a cargo ship is a low-income job at this time

Total lack of even basic safety equipment. OHSA would have them shut down in a flash.

Don't worry. Most things are made according to engineering design.
Agreed for the first few times I did this type of activity. Then you realize it is supporting a literal mountain of weight. And you relax. Then you realize it is holding a literal mountain of weight and realize if anything goes, at least it will be over very quickly.
Bet that was an over-weight load in North America.

What could go wrong with that
I know it's an added expense, but I'm curious as to why they don't have a conveyor belt system to load the barge. This must go on constantly. Sure would be simpler and less dangerous.

Most efficient is a gravity drop for loading.
But they do have conveyor for unloading.

Still have to have dumps into conveyor. Conveyor also take a LOT of maintenance. Usually this is done with haul trucks but I have done this with dump trucks.
I doesn’t get any simple, faster, efficient, cost effective and maintenance free than this method.
