After living in India and Romania, the pushback I have felt wearing folk costume or folk costume elements came from people in the US who themselves didn't feel comfortable regularly wearing the clothing of their heritage feeling affronted when someone not from their culture wore their clothing. But when abroad, people expressed pride and joy seeing the American adopt their folk clothing. But that is just my experience.
I can understand that. I’d feel very different about a non-Norwegian wearing bunad outside Norway (with a possible exception on the celebration of our constitution day) than I do about immigrants in Norway wearing bunads. Mine was bought second-hand from a French woman who was moving back to France, where she wouldn’t have much occasion to wear it.
The odd exception to this is Saint Patrick's Day - if you drink, you're Irish and you're wearing green that day! LOL that's the only time I can think when Americans throw that attitude to the Wayside and those that are Irish don't seem to mind they're sudden friends everywhere!
I'm gonna guess it's mainly everyday hard-wearing clothes with maybe her folk vest, scarf and blouse. Regular jeans, trousers and jackets for practical purposes while working.
My great grandmother was saved from drowning in the Tisza by being pulled out by her hair. She would never cut her hair because, she said, she would not be alive if not for her hair. Even after she came to America in 1928 and to her death in 1965 she always wore a crown of braids on her head. She wore black scarves but only out in bad/cold weather. Love your channel.
Please feel free to take as much time as you need to recover. We will wait patiently for any videos you release at whatever pace is comfortable for you. Your health and comfort is the most important thing!
I wear some folk pieces I have picked up on holidays. I wore my dirndl top with a plain brown handmade skirt and white blouse shopping once. Popped into a shop for a sandwich. The checkout counter lad was possibly from Pakistan. He asked if my outfit was a traditional Irish costume. I told him that the top was Austrian folk wear. He asked if I was Austrian. I told him I'm Irish. Poor lad looked so confused but complimented me for looking like I stepped out of a fairytale.
that sounds like a lovely outfit! I too am not Austrian but have always adored dirndl dresses and after many many years finally have the complete dress in my possession (top, dress, apron) now if only I was as courageous as you to actually wear it...
I would love to see a "Expectation vs Reality" clothing video. I've always been a bit curious how decorative or plain folk work clothes were compared to what they would wear for special occasions.
Welcome back and you are looking so well! A very pretty dress too. Ooh Rachel Maksey - she's so funny. Ooh beautiful blue skirt - and the one after it with the floral stripe. I love the gathered skirts and dresses. LOL - naughty folklaw police! Did enjoy, thank you. xx
I'm so glad to see you back, and looking so well! I hope you're feeling better, and making sure to take good care of yourself. I haven't had folklore gatekeeping (mostly because I have no idea what my folkloric heritage would entail!) but oooo boy, I've had it with other styles of dress. I think the worst/snobbiest was the Steampunk community, which is so hilarious to me, because that's not even a REAL tradition, it's an entirely fictional style of dress, so how the heck are you gonna tell someone what is or isn't Steampunk?! All of these look beautiful, and I love your stylish twists, particularly the floral bits and bobs.
Video feedback: Some small captions on the closeups of your outfits would be useful if you don't want to do a voice over. That way we will know which of your stuff is self made and what is purchased.
The layer by layer, and the balence of detail to full length shot was really nice! Having very limited folk wear around where I live, while some description or notes would be interesting, your close-ups really do get across enough to show. (Especially in a more casual lookbook context). And the music sets the scene so well! I know some youtubers who don't have a voice over put information in the captions. The expectation vs reality (or, how to balence form and function), would be an absolute treat.
Also, I would love to see what you actually wear on the farm! I work in print and production so I want to be a little dressed up while also not having to worry tooo much about ink stains. Didn't know you were away ill, but good to see you back, Egészségére!
Apron! That's the best way to protect your clothes. If you look up 18th and 19th century work aprons. That would give you an authentic look in the workplace 😉
What a delightful video. Glad to see you in good health. Loved the little details of embroidery and smocking on some of the outfits. There was so much movement and migration throughout Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries that it is increasingly hard to maintain geographic traditional costumes. Especially as many were not really adopted until the 19th century to distinguish "natives" from "foreigners".
Glad to see you back and well!!! ❤️ I really loved the idea of "cottagecore vs realfarmcore" video!!! Also, I don't get the fuss over wearing the same clothes more than once... If clothes weren't meant to be reusable, they would be made of paper or some recycled material and not a pollution issue like they're right know 🤷🏻♀️ And, I love Rachel and I'm pretty sure her bedroom is a mess too during her outfit videos, just because she's the most chaotic person on RUclips 😹❤️
This pleats on the first skirt were so interesting! And then there were so many more pleats/gathering/smocking. I wonder do these techniques have names! I imagine you could fill a video cataloging all the methods of gathering and pleating in your wardrobe. I would love to see that.
Those pleats caught my eye as well. Love them. Love your style and fashion sense. Glad to hear that you are on the mend. Your editing is enjoyably quirky and fun. I love to salvage vintage fabrics as well. I think it respectful to enjoy the craftsmanship for as long as possible. That is what our ancestors did. Never too proud to be thrifty. Besides, the details from doing so makes the end product so much more personal and custom. Love your hair! I have a similar hair regimen. I constantly get compliments on it. Thank you for being you !!
Wow Anna, there are so many things going on in your style - in a good way! It is rich and vivid and reflects your personality nicely. I’ve never seen anyone wear folkloric inspired clothes so well (and being your close neighbor from Slovakia you know that the tradition is still alive here as well). Also I’m so glad you’re feeling better. Welcome back!
I am in a modern/folkloric style myself. I am pretty sure people who see me in public think I am absolutely crazy but I really do not care anymore. I am happy and I have decided that’s all I care about lol. Also modern clothing completely sucks so I’m not interested in going back! 🤣
I am in my sixties now and have decided I don't care what people think anymore. I wear a lot of Mennonite cape dresses and Amish dresses I have sewn myself and they are extremely comfortable. And I am not Amish or Mennonite. I have just started sewing some peasant blouse and got a dirndl pattern because Pretty Shepherd has inspired me to make a vest.
It so sweet to see one of my favorite RUclipsrs being inspired by another favorite of mine. Both you and Rachel make me laugh and feel like it would be so much fun to be friends with you. Also, I am so glad you are doing better and took all the time you needed before jumping back into making videos.
I was literally just wishing that you would do an outfit video right before you posted this! So good to see you back. You've been missed! Please YES! Do the expectation vs. reality outfit video! I also really appreciated what you said about the "folk police". Their whole spiel has bothered me for ages now. Especially with how much I love folkwear. Thank you for making such lovely content. Hope you continue to recover well. 💕
1. Yes please do the reality farm outfits! 2. I too have been watching WAAAAYYYY too much Rachel Maksy no wonder I ended up here. Also, I'm glad you're alive too
It's wonderful that you are feeling better. I have not encountered the Folk Police but people have commented on what they would like to see me wear, lol.
I have heard rumours of the Bunad Police, but never encountered any of them myself. They tend to criticise how you wear your shawl and the position of your silver brooches and things like that.
Thank you so much for your video 😍 I enjoyed it very much💕 I'm so glad you feel better and you're able to make videos again. Take good care of yourself 💝 Have a fabulous week, see you next Sunday 🎉❤️
Glad you are feeling well, and even more glad you are taking all the time you need to recover! Yes, please do an expectation and reality video. I'd love to see what you find practical on the farm!
Yay, you're back! The outfits were fun to see. I'm one who would vote for some commentary on the outfits. Not even necessarily as a voiceover while you are modeling them - I think it would be interesting if you highlighted a few of the unique items & told a little about them when you appear in front of the camera between outfits. By the way, I really liked the yellow kerchief you put on at the beginning; I think that color suits you & it also looked nice with the yellow pearl drop earrings.
So glad you are feeling better and have recovered from a life threatening illness. I thought you haven't been around for a while but did not know you were ill. Love how wonderful you are looking now.
❤😊❤ Te magad vagy egy film ,élvezet nézni ,teli vagy energiával ami erõt ad a nézõknek is nekem biztosan ! Kívánok minden jòt neked egészségben ,és szeretteidnek is ! The editing of the outfits with the music was as Rachel would say *Chef's Kiss*. And yes, I would love to see what you wear on while working. You've mentioned in the past that some of it is not that different than photos so I am curious now.
I'm so glad you are doing better. I really enjoyed all your fun outfits. Thank you for having such a good attitude about folkloric clothing. I haven't meet the folkloric police but I have meet a clothing police before for a different fashion from japan or even vintage fashion. Lol I always laugh and go about my day knowing I'm much happier in my clothes because I choose something specific and special to me not just whatever is popular right now.
Lovely, Anna! Welcome back! I am grateful you allowed yourself time to heal....you look fantastic! And what a great collection of outfits! Your layering is inspiring! And thank you for being upfront with the gatekeepers. Do what makes your heart happy...you are a perfect example of that! ❤️
It is a joy to see how much happiness it brings you presenting your beautiful wardrobe. You are such an inspiration. So happy to see you back on your feet ✨💜✨
I loved the video. I dont think that you needed a voiceover during the outfit reveal. Your close-ups on tiny details like embroidery or the loving darn were very inspiring. I loved the folkloric aesthetic at the end...so beautiful. Have a great week.🌷
Oh, I'm SO glad that you're doing better! I was beginning to worry about you not having posted in quite a while! I'm not a long time subscriber, but I was delighted to find your channel, and worried when you stopped posting. Your outfits are so fun and pretty! I love how much fun you had with this! And I would LOVE to see an "expectations vs reality" video in the future!
I´m so glad you are back and doing better! Here in Austria (and in parts of Germany) there is the tradition of "Trachtenvereinen", associations for the preservations of folk costumes. They are sometimes pretty narrow-minded about what and how to wear as a folk dress. I remember a story of a mayor´s wife, who was filmed for the local TV-station wearing a certain folk dress combined with a pearl necklace, and this provoked anonymous threat calls. :/
I absolutely adore the Romanian blouse you showed (as well as the traditional Hungarian ones you've mentioned in previous videos). If you're feeling up to it/you decide to make one yourself, I'd love to see how it's made and decorated!!!! Also, its so good to have you back, I'm so glad you're feeling better!!!!!!!
These videos are very intresting. I was pinned to my chair while watching them. I very much like to go back to Hajós, where my father lived and I used to go to crêche then kinderkarten speaking their very special German dialect and wearing the village's special folk costumes throughout my early childhood. It was a beautiful perriod in my life. Soon after that, before school, I lost my grandfather and my father a bit later. But I still return to Hajós and Kalocsa from time to time. Everybody is burried there on my father's side. So, because of the sweet early memories of mine, I love the folk art of both places.
You really inspired me, and I wear folk scarves on my head everyday now, I love them so much. People really underestimate the value and quality of thin wool!
I'm here for the hair and the music and am not disappointed ! LOVE the hairstyle you're wearing in the beginning of the video, the Gibson-inspired one. Totally trying that soon !
I was so glad to see your Red Dead outfit+. My bf and I started playing RDO (PC) a month ago and enjoy it. I am so happy to see your healthy. Your Folk Police/Gate Keeper comments are deeply appreciated. I fully agree with you and wish more people spoke up.
You have made my day, Down with the Folk Police! They run rampant through FB sewing groups now and again. Let people sew what they want! Also, I'd love to see more of those gorgeous smock pleated skirts......
I would love to see the photo outfits vs the actual farm outfits when you are feeling well enough to do that!!! I love to see what people actually wear in working environments where stains, tears, and other types of damage are possible and so "super nice" clothing is avoided. I put in quotes because I think that work clothing is also nice and I love all the mending that adds character to pieces too and kind of just see it as another kind of well loved item. I hope that makes sense.
I love that you show all the layers and parts of the outfit and include really nice close ups of the details, those are the things that really make an outfit IMO So glad you’re on the mend 😊
Glad you're back! love this and your a gamer! I love red dead redemption your super kool in my book hope your always here on you tube I had appendicitis that burst 11 days in the hospital I can connect to how you're feeling thank you for the update and video blessings.
To give a bit of context of what I know about the "folk police" in my own country, they dedicate themselves pretty hard to preserving patrimony to avoid what happened for example in some parts of Germany where they mixed folk costume and modernized it to the point where local variations and crafts were lost. It's understandable on that regard but it has no place policing people's everyday wear
a long time ago my mother yelled at me for wearing my feresi in our garden on a weekday. (feresi is a traditional finnish/russian karelian suspender dress) I tought it was stupid to just keep it in a closet and never wear it.
Oh wow I had no idea about your health issue, I'm glad you're doing better now! I wish you a good recovery, take it easy and pat your RDR2 good boaahhh/guhhhrl for me! I don't own any pieces of my country's folk costume (Finland) because they're so expensive (it's usually all handmade and they're held in great regard) but I dream about making the whole costume starting from weaving the fabrics with my mother in a workshop. I think I would like to start from making the pocket, because I could see that being so handy as a standalone piece and they're very pretty. We have a hashtag that roughly translates to "pimp my tradition" which incorporates everything from wearing individual costume pieces as everyday wear, to creating completely new pieces like shorts or whatever you like from traditional fabrics. Obviously I haven't got any real life experience on the folk costume police but I'm a member of allll the facebook groups to fawn over the beautiful costumes and I get the impression it's encouraged to just wear your pieces as much as you can, however you like it. It's considered important to wear the costumes correctly when the occasion calls for it, but at the same time if the pieces aren't worn the tradition will die.
Very well said! Good luck to you and your mom on finding the time to do that costume workshop! It sounds like a marvellous mother-daughter pastime ☺️❤️🌿
I love these, the more decorative outfits remind me of folk Sunday and party wear. Wish those bright florals and big skirts would be more socially acceptable, I wear them a bit more toned down and still get a lot of attention
Loved this! And hanging out during the premiere with everyone was a blast. Glad you're feeling better and starting to make content again. Just don't push yourself too hard while still recovering!! And F the gatekeeping folklore (and costuming/sewing/crafting) police...even if they're editing your videos as you make them 🤣 💖
I’m glad I’ve never encountered them in person, because the Correct Way™️ to wear my silver brooches simply does not look good on short people like me - there’s not enough space on the shirt between the top of the bodice and my chin!
Its nice to see you back! I hope you are feeling better! I'd love to see videos about the farm and real farm outfits hahaha The folk music is amazing, but english is my second language, so it really helps me when you describe the outfits and name the items, how they are used, the order of the layers, etc. One little sugestion: I'd love to hear about your childhood memories, folk tales, fairytales, nursery rhimes and traditions! Im sure they are very different from those I heard as a child!
Hi I'm fairly new to your channel. I've been ghosting for the last couple months or so when your Transylvanian vest popped up as a recommended video. I love the way it came out. Simply gorgeous. As for farming that would be a fun video. I grew up with farm animals so I don't really expect much of anything. Though it would surprise me to see you out milking cows and mucking stalls in a wedding dress. Still there is a common idea that farmers are all in overalls with a straw hat chewing on a piece of straw. 😂😂 I love Rachel Maksy too. She is hilarious. I follow her along with many of the other costubers. That's kinda my thing. I'm along for the history bounding ride so to speak. I have never had issues with the folk police, personally. I know there have been several ladies in the history bounding Facebook group that have shown their traditional garb and got lots of glowing complements for it. Some people have expressed a desire to learn more about a certain region's traditional clothing and received lots of help from the members. But as the world was put in lockdown for the last year its hard to say if the folk police have been sniffing about ready to criticize everything. Anyways glad to hear you are recovering well from your surgery. I look forward to future videos.
I have been doing a lot of research into my genealogy. Recently discovered the areas my family immigrated from. The folk costumes of the area are so beautiful, I wanted to make something inspired by it! After this, I just might!
The dress like a night gown reminds me of little house on the prairie. Just need a bonnet hanging down the back. I don't remember them actually wearing them on there heads but it would obstruct their expressions.
Yes do the expectation vs. Reality farm outfits!!
yes !!!
Si!!

Yess please ❤️❤️⭐

I think Rachel makes this look easy out of sheer editing prowess. Which is a good thing, because that can be learned.

Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it! 🌿☺️
Glad to see you back on your feet. I've had the same surgery. Just take your time.
The idea for the video you suggested is amazing. Love all your videos
That sounds crazy! 🙈
It's lovely to see you well again. Best wishes for your complete recovery. I really enjoyed this video.
This is the best video ever and I want a million more, please! A breakdown of the elements would be very helpful.
So so glad you're doing better! Hope your recovering keeps going well too! Sending all the good vibes your way!
So glad you’re feeling better! Love your videos! Expectation and reality would be fantastic!
Awesome! Thank you! I was a little bit afraid that all the little easter eggs of the outfit would go unnoticed ✨
Glad to see your smiling face. 💚
I'll be very proud to show off all darning and mending on my faded aprons 🥰🌷
Happy you are doing better, hoping you will soon recover completely! Thanks for the wonderful outfit ideas!
Lovely to see you! Absolutely yes please to farmwear expectations vs reality!
I love that you show all the layers and parts of the outfit and include really nice close ups of the details, those are the things that really make an outfit IMO
So glad you’re on the mend 😊
Welcome back
Please do! ✨📸🙌🏻
I'm so glad you're ok! Hope your recovery goes smoothly! Really appreciate your videos so much! Xx
Expectation vs reality farm outfits would be great!
True and well said! 🌿🙌🏻
These were all fun to see, but I admit my favorite is the 1 with the bright blue skirt.
I would watch that video about farm clothes!
Thank you for a lovely video Anna!
I love your Marie Antoinette dress lol! Also the outfits were all great! Feel better! ❤️
I used to do all that stuff before my husband died. It made me smile to see the happy stuff again!
a long time ago my mother yelled at me for wearing my feresi in our garden on a weekday. (feresi is a traditional finnish/russian karelian suspender dress) I tought it was stupid to just keep it in a closet and never wear it.
Clothing is meant to be enjoyed
glad to see you smiling and excited again
So happy you are on the mend! Love you! And boo to the folk police!
And F the gatekeeping folklore (and costuming/sewing/crafting) police...even if they're editing your videos as you make them 🤣
💖
Hope the recovery is still going well! Rachel will be so chuffed to have inspired you - you are both wonderful in my view
Glad you are recovering well x
In my country the folk costume is called bunad. And here we also talk about the Bunad-police all the time.
I’m glad I’ve never encountered them in person, because the Correct Way™️ to wear my silver brooches simply does not look good on short people like me - there’s not enough space on the shirt between the top of the bodice and my chin!
This gives me a new appreciation for vests! I never thought to put them over dresses. I’ll definitely be trying it!
I’m so glad you’re feeling better!! Welcome back, I’ve missed your videos.
Its nice to see you back! I hope you are feeling better! I'd love to see videos about the farm and real farm outfits hahaha
The folk music is amazing, but english is my second language, so it really helps me when you describe the outfits and name the items, how they are used, the order of the layers, etc.
One little sugestion: I'd love to hear about your childhood memories, folk tales, fairytales, nursery rhimes and traditions! Im sure they are very different from those I heard as a child!
Thanks! Will keep this all in mind 😉 Also, I will add captions with some descriptions later today 🌿
You=all the vibes, all the time!
Thank you for the inspiration!
I'm so glad you are feeling better! Thank you for this fun video! Your vest is so great!
What lovely outfits! What wonderful pieces of jewelry! What prints and stitching! Gak! 😍🤩🥳
I have been doing a lot of research into my genealogy. Recently discovered the areas my family immigrated from. The folk costumes of the area are so beautiful, I wanted to make something inspired by it! After this, I just might!
Good luck with that! 🌿✨
A scarf/bandana + sleeveless tops is a really neat look 👀
I only just found your channel last week. I love it. So glad you are on the mend. Great video, loved the outfits and the music. Feel better.
oh no I didn’t know you were unwell! I missed something clearly. glad you’re recovering!!!
Same
The dress like a night gown reminds me of little house on the prairie. Just need a bonnet hanging down the back. I don't remember them actually wearing them on there heads but it would obstruct their expressions.
Same! 😁👒
Glad that you are well, love your outfits. Wish I was 40 years younger so I could wear these cute things.
