Couple tips for those that want to play this. 1. Power ups appear in most levels, Ryu just missed them or didn’t know what they. Candies increase bubble speed and distance for example. 2. Lightning blots go in the opposite direction you’re facing. 3. Bubbles can be pushed, that’s actually how to get the fire in the middle for level 88. 4. Bubbles joined together pop together, this is how you get combo that lead to the letters. 5. Power ups spawn at different times in the level but once they respawn that’s it. Each level has individual invisible air currents that determine where your bubbles will be pushed to. 6. Bubbles can also push each other, use tip 5 and 6 to beat level 57. 7. Move into position as quick as possible before the enemies land, this can make many levels a ton easier. 8. Wall collision is the trickiest, if part of your dragon can push through by jumping or falling then you can usually fall through it. Once you are falling through a wall you can only move left and right when there is an opening or when you go from the bottom to the top of the screen. 9. More tips can be put in this reply section, this game is great because it doesn’t force you to start at the beginning.
Easy way to jump on bubbles is to hold the jump button when landing on a bubble as opposed to trying to time it. Destroying your own bubbles award points so face that wall and bash the bubble button once all mobs are dead and there are no items left to pick up (that are within range). Bubbling all the monsters and then destroying them all at once when they're grouped together is great for points and seem to trigger fat bonus drops like massive diamonds or turning all your bubbles currently floating around into fruit so don't be afriad to shoot bubbles even if there are no targets in front of you. For example, if you've bubbled all the mobs and they're stuck together, stand around and shoot bubbles for a bit before killing the mobs. Easy at the early levels, wouldn't recommend it later as mobs start to break free a lot faster. You get tastier fruits the more mobs you combo together (so avoid popping solo mobs early in the game).
Also worth noting: the game and level design seems to be aimed toward a 2-player experience. The solutions to the unfair levels are a lot more obvious with two people.
Specifically on #1, two show up per level. The first is just points, the second will have some other effect. There are also secret doors (will appear in the place of the 2nd power up) if you make it to floors 20, 30, and 40 without dying.
@@Zero323F Being colorblind, I never know what effects the candy will give me. I have the arcade PCB, and try not to continue when I play. The furthest I've made it is to the mid 50s.
I asked you to play this game at one of your streams at twitch and you said how do you know what my next video will be and I thought you were kidding. This is a surprise! 😅
Omg, I know I'm here with many of you who had played tf out of this game, know what all of the items do and how to move through the stages to kill the enemies more easily, and are internally screaming stuff like "OMG. GET THE NECKLACE. GET THE UMBRELLA. BRUH", but honestly I just love seeing him play such a iconic game 🫧🫧🫧
It's fun seeing Ryu play a game blind on pure skill. I could do without him complaining about how game is unfair when he puts no effort into researching the mechanics.
Glad to see there are others out there who also played the heck out of this game too! I tried to beat this game without gaming over and got close a few times. Fun little game!
My late mother and I played this when I was a kid, 30-odd years ago. I seem to recall us being similarly frustrated with some of the levels. We did eventually beat the game, though, so it's nice to see it completed again. Thanks, Ryu.
Legendary level 57 I was there in the back of the family car playing this on the gameboy on the way to Spain. I never thought I would see a step by step of this game and for you to grind through that level brought back memories you earned another subscriber today,
@@Nyah420 the fact that he even attempted this game without at least some knowledge of the items is baffling. The fact that he made it all the way to the bad ending is a testament to his patience.
Yes!!! This is one of my most favorite games!!! Hoping you get the good ending. My mom and I used to / still sometimes play this, it was our special game we beat together.
@ true. But if you get to the final boss with an extra life, you can hit start, select to revive the other player, and then land of killing blow to unlock the good ending!
Hey Ryu. :) Have you ever heard of UFO 50? There's a lot of cool games on there that are quite NES-like and I think you'd enjoy them. There's some really challenging ones as well that might be up your alley. I just wanted to let you know about this gem of a title if you didn't know.
Me and my one year older sis played this game so much as kids!! we played so often we were completly in sync with established movement patterns and objectives for each level to plow through most of them effortlessly. We only deviated to possibly grant someone to complete the letter bubbles "extend" as it usually allowed faster level ending. LOVE IT!
Awesome! Was excited to see that you are playing Bubble Bobble. That was one of my favorites growing up! A local pizza place used to have the arcade machine at the back entrance and I used to play it there all the time!
Love the channel. Also no way in heck third is the first time you played this game for the first time (or 100th) without save states on the first try :D
41:29 this became one of my favorite levels over time. My friends and i would play this game endlessly. We got gud at just timing it out right to go up the the side of the stage. We loved this game.
Really glad to see Ryu struggle on 57. I remember the pain of that level as a kid. I thought the only way to solve it was to be lucky and race up the wall fast.
Level 57 is a common roadblock for lots of players. However, the solution is pretty simple and obvious. It's just hard to pull off. It wants you to build bubbles up the center column. That's it.
hours and hours into this game as a kid, discovered the secret levels on my own, still hum the music sometimes. Awesome upload!... Haven't watched the whole thing yet but wondering what Ryu does when he doesn't get the true ending (w/a friend)❤
My mom and I used to play this together all the time!!!! It is one of my very favorite classic NES games!!! Try Pinball Quest next time!! That game is wild lol
That game has a music loop so catchy i'll have it in my head for hours. But for a game to play I would suggest going back to the Adventure Island franchise. I know you did the 1st one, but the other 2 on the NES are gems.
This game was especially popular among ladies in the arcades where I came from, and it's been hypothesized that the reason was because the game was not overly violent like a lot of other games at the time.
Point of the game isnt necessarily "to beat" it, but to get as high a score as possible, and you can get REALLY good scores. Pro tip: get a score of over 1 million, then start a new game from the beginning, and you'll be rewarded with top notch items from the start, making it way easier to get an even higher score.
Core memories...I remember this game being pretty easy but played with a friend a lot and just face tanked everything. Such a strange interesting jankass game with mental institution music on loop.
It's almost impossible to get the good ending in single player. In level 99, an item spawns that's much easier for Player 2 to get. Then, when fighting the final boss, BOTH PLAYERS MUST BE PRESENT for the bubble pop (hitting select while paused will offer a life to the other player if you've one to spare).
There was a pizza place near my high school that had this game on an arcade machine. I definitely spent many an afternoon playing Bubble Bobble rather than going to class
I remember playing this game a long, long time ago lol. XD I forget a lot about it but what I do know is that I beat it and there's a LOT more levels than just 100. Good luck! XD
I love games like this :) Bubble Bobble, Snow Bros, and Joe and Mac. Joe and Mac is my favorite but I have fond memories as a child of this one and Snow Bros.
I played Bubble Bobble a ton with my siblings as a kid. This was a fun trip down memory lane on how we figured it all out ourselves. Thanks for the fun! :)

I'm LOVING these full length featured videogame videos! I missed Diddy Kong, so gotta go back to watch that, but watched the rest! Would LOVE to see some more full length RPG videos (or if not 1 video, since RPG's are so long, maybe like 3 or 4 part videos)
This is one of my favorite games from my childhood. My brother and I got out NES one year for Christmas, and I can’t remember how many hours we spent as a family trying to conquer this game. The music track always hits the nostalgia feels too 😊
Dude, you gotta figure out the various power-ups and power-bubbles. This was painful. I'm not sure if you have a bad remote but you should be cranking out tons of bubbles and use them to jump around. Did I mention, get and use power-ups. This game is fun and challenging.
For not having played so long and being surprised by some things, sure remember some things that now that I think about it are pretty obscure these days (not really seen in other games, as far as I know). Like bubble jumping, killing an enemy by being close to a wall and bubbling, maybe jumping up through a floor but I guess that's less uncommon. Some of it seems like muscle memory, if somebody never played or heard anything about it, I dunno if they'd notice those things at all even in the first 30 min or more, let alone do right off without mention Edit: Floor 43, "OMG USE THE LIGHTNING AAAAAAAAAA" yelling at screen moment Edit 2: Ok, it's always been a favorite for those kinds of games, but floor 57 was legit pretty bs. Tbh, I never got that far as a kid myself I don't think, and he got further in the first attempts than I did replaying multiple different times back then. Still, I loved the fire and lightning, that's how you make it easier on yourself (plus they're fun)
Yep, this is definitely my favourite channel on RUclips. I love these hour+++ long videos, full gameplays and everything. Ryu is very strong doing this format 🔥🔥
The frustration watching you avoid all the fun power ups and not popping all the enemies in one pop...also, there's 113 levels in total... And no, neither the game or any of the levels are "janky". See them as a puzzle, and if you die its all on you. And, I know its your first time playing it, but I've never had the urge to scream out loud "YOU'RE PLAYING IT ALL WRONG!!!" more in my life, haha! This was a fun one.
As someone who only watches your Mario Maker videos, I had to watch this one! I love Bubble Bobble. Just to answer some of your questions, the lightning bolts go in the opposite direction you’re looking. You’re also supposed to pop the bubbles with the spikes on your guy. And the number in the top right is the second player score. Hope you play it again and beat it without gaming over!
This is my favorite Ryu video of all time. I am loving all of it. Someone of Ryu's Caliber experiencing the same issues that I had in my childhood! The worst part of the game is that newer ports of it make it virtually impossible to jump on a bubble. Despite the flashing sprites, playing on the original NES seems to be the only way to play this game. Oh, and to play it in the arcade.
41:17 - ❝I refuse to skip this level!❞ Exactly! It’s Genius not stupid. Remember Bubble Bobble was designed as a coin op arcade game. The primary design goal is not “fun” it’s PROFIT. Provide an engaging experience that speeds along an initial progression and builds: ABC - Accomplishment - Buy-in (or rather a sense of investment in the money spent) - Commitment to keep playing. Then hit the player with a brick-wall and watch the quarters drop
Congrats, Ryu! Yeah, this was originally a quarter-muncher so they kept that obnoxious arcade difficulty when they ported it to the NES. It is a janky early NES game, but still a classic! 😋 This was actually the first game I ever played/owned on the NES as a kid. I only made it to level 57 and just never could get past it. At least I now know a winning strategy against the final boss thanks to you! 😄 I'm not sure how you play your NES games, but I actually recommend trying *Bubble Bobble Part 2* on the NES (if you can). It is a slightly more polished game and has new moves, new items and even actual boss levels! I'd say it is even harder than this one as I recall you only have a limited number of continues. However, if you like this game, you'll probably like Part 2.
38:08 lvl 57 the 1st real skill check of the game, you can scale the side if your quick enough and some luck between cycles, as the intended center tower is pretty janky
PS: The element bubbles; water, fire, lightning etc. if you pop them the element goes in the opposite direction, so you can use these to kill enemies.... - also, E. X. T. E. N. D. gets you a bonus/level skip
LOL!!!! I remember I played this game years ago, reluctantly at first, but then 5 levels in I was hooked. It’s now one of my favorite gaming memories from my childhood. #ThePainIsReal
It'd be cool if Bubble Bobble would have a level editor to make your own levels. But it's fun watching you play this game. The music brings back memories.
I've never said "Get that! Get that! It's right there what are you doing??!?!" more times watching Ryu than I did for this one. It was like he was getting right next to the powerups and purposely not grabbing them just to give me an anxiety attack ROFL.
Lol, this was a fun, but frustrating watch. You jump with A...but, if you hold down A and land on a bubble, you can ride it up. It only pops once you let go of A. The manual does say this. I feel like if you realized you could ride bubbles up, it would have made a big difference! Lol
My mother played so much this game when I was a kid. She figured out every secrets in the game and I use to admire her for that. Now I play it every now and then on my virtual console and nobody seems to admire me for it 😢
This must be the game I remember playing at my neighbor's house when I was really young. My memories of the game make it seem a lot cooler and more vivid but this has to be the game.

The worst part of the game is that newer ports of it make it virtually impossible to jump on a bubble. Despite the flashing sprites, playing on the original NES seems to be the only way to play this game. Oh, and to play it in the arcade.
More like 110 floors, unless you're going for the bad ending. The best ending also require playing on hardmode.
And beating the final boss with 2 players, iirc
Yes, definitely a nostalgia build up! Thank you for re-energizing my past!
41:17 - ❝I refuse to skip this level!❞ Exactly!
It’s Genius not stupid. Remember
Bubble Bobble was designed as a coin op arcade game. The primary design goal is not “fun” it’s PROFIT. Provide an engaging experience that speeds along an initial progression and builds: ABC
- Accomplishment
- Buy-in (or rather a sense of investment in the money spent)
- Commitment to keep playing.
Then hit the player with a brick-wall and watch the quarters drop
This was a coin-op that I put so much cash in! So good seeing you grind these levels! :D
I'm not sure how you play your NES games, but I actually recommend trying *Bubble Bobble Part 2* on the NES (if you can). It is a slightly more polished game and has new moves, new items and even actual boss levels! I'd say it is even harder than this one as I recall you only have a limited number of continues. However, if you like this game, you'll probably like Part 2.
I think this game was designed for 2 players. My brother and I use to burn through this real quick playing together.
38:08 lvl 57 the 1st real skill check of the game, you can scale the side if your quick enough and some luck between cycles, as the intended center tower is pretty janky
That level is really meant for two player. One spamming bubbles under the other makes it trivial with the center.
@mittensfastpaw yeah, i can see having 2 players would be significantly easier.
Good luck getting the good ending
You're right, level 57 is some kind of sick joke.
The intended strat for most levels it to be 2 players so you only have to deal with half the level.
Thanks for playing this. It's the first game I ever beat. Also my favorite game.❤
I've never said "Get that! Get that! It's right there what are you doing??!?!" more times watching Ryu than I did for this one. It was like he was getting right next to the powerups and purposely not grabbing them just to give me an anxiety attack ROFL.
I FREAKING LOVE BUBBLE BOBBLE!!!
My brother and I would play this for hours when we were kids. We never beat that Link-looking mofo at level 100
Ryu you're hero for playing this, sicko!
Now we want another video with true ending and power up grinding
Lol, this was a fun, but frustrating watch. You jump with A...but, if you hold down A and land on a bubble, you can ride it up. It only pops once you let go of A. The manual does say this. I feel like if you realized you could ride bubbles up, it would have made a big difference! Lol
Having played it with a friend recently, I was looking forward to your reaction to the ending. It was worth the whole wait. 😆
My favourite childhood game. So glad to see this one!
Reminds me a little of Rainbow Islands.
Edit: Ah, actually Rainbow Islands is the sequel of Bubble Bobble. Didnt know that until now.
