In this video, I play the French Defense and encounter the Exchange Variation. While this has the reputation of being a dry and positional line, I play in a super aggressive style and thing get sharp and exciting very quickly...

One of the reasons we watch this channel not his frantic pal with the dramatic hair... Lol
That was a funny line

I decided to gambit my time doing college stuff to see Eric crush someone
Hey I did that gambit too
The procrastinator's gambit. An all time classic
Oh no, your time
I can't believe aggressive and defense can be in the same sentence
The gam bits donation at 15:30 was peak Rosen humor
I love the longer games. I’ve been watching your old Classical Arena videos, they are much more instructive than blitz games imo
Yes, agreed. Great that some of the presumably uninteresting content is cut for watcher's benefit.
I second this, I really like seeing him analyze the positions and don't have time to sit in a stream.
Wow! The calculations that went into the final moves. So much fun!
I love how Eric makes sure to shout-out everyone who subscribes/ donates/ whatever. There was a guy around 7:35 who gave bits with txt2speech in the middle of Eric's calculations. It felt to me like a bad time for it and it almost seemed like Eric would ignore it. If he had, and I were that guy, it would feel kind of like Eric was annoyed at me for essentially giving him money. I dunno, I hope anyone who reads this sees what I'm getting at. He's just so warm and positive with his fanbase and it goes a long way for me. Like, I'd probably have words with someone talking shit on IMRosen (this scenario is completely imagined, because who could talk shit on Eric?)
Eric is the sweetest man I ever saw, he's genuine, even wholesome. I wish I could be half as positive as him.
It's 3AM in Korea, and I should be sleeping...and boom! Eric uploads
It's 2:30AM in Malaysia and just like u, i should be sleeping but suddenly... Eric come :')
It's 9 PM in Italy and I should eat the food at restaurant
Its 2am here btw
1:30am lithuania.
I love your content Eric! Thanks for grinding like you do!
Love the slow pace and detailed commentary!
Thanks. I've finally found someone shows how to play french defense. Most videos on youtube only show how to crash frech defence as white.
white has 13 minutes on the clock yet uses no time when black is starting to sac and the game becomes tactical. You should really start to use your time once the game gets sharp.
White and Black mutually agreed to not use the open e-file for no reason at all.
This video gave me a lot of fun, really, thanks Eric.
For perspective on the 1800: I started playing (not just knowing that the horsey makes the L shape and pawns capture diagonally) during the same time. Dec 2020. Went from 700~ to 1200
Jeez bro..
Love the longer format!
I wish you’d post more of this type of content on RUclips honestly. I’m trying to break 2000 and these videos are very helpful
look up john bartholomew on youtube, his older content is a lot of this
The dude that started playing in December 2020 and is now 1800 is definitely built different
Yeah I thought I was good starting at the same time and getting to 1500. That person stood me up though
May seem like I'm trying to brag, but I personally am really proud of starting playing in February 2021 and hitting 2060 classical (which ranks me around 1000th of active players) and 2150 rapid on Lichess. Still a big achievement for that person and of course it depends on how much you practice, but it's quite doable
Honestly, the best thing to do is only play classical (I just played about 2-3 matches a week) and analyse. Reading books or watching videos about grandmaster games can help as well, since you'll learn how to play more positional intuitively, and you'll also pick up on openings
@@Mathijs_A lol wink wink 🤡
You guys are making me feel bad, I'm struggling to get to 2200 on Lichess and I've been playing for some good three years, and I thought I was doing ok
I like these 20+10 rapid games. Lots of strategy to learn.
Wow just as one of your donors said, your content is very instructive, and so was this vid. With a slower time we get to see all the many tactics and considerations you'd make in more detail.
I like these gentle time limits: it gives you me more time to understand your "funny lines".
As someone who plays the french defense exclusively against 1. e4, I'm very happy to see the Bd6 followed by Ne7 setup as I also only play that against the exchange (unless an early c4 is played).
I love this content Eric!
I thought the French Defense meant resigning
Its the best opening against d4 (queens pawn opening)
@@neelsinghvi9694 No- it’s the engine line.

Gam-Bits. Can’t believe how long it’s taken for me to hear someone make that pun!
>clicks on new eric rosen video
>oooooo I wanna play stafford
In this kind of similarish setup a good ol' fishing pole attack is most of the time the easiest way to win for me, for some reasons most players (of almost any rating) seem to be very confused about it and I rarely encounter people able to correctly refute it, especially if it's not a direct line but rather a transposition.
Edit: Amusingly I wrote this comment before the end of the video and it transposed into the basic idea of the fishing pole, sacrificing a piece on g3 to open the h file and kick the knight out of f3 (often to a bad square) to attack with a rook/queen battery often supported by the dark square bishop.
I don't know why white almost always takes the poisonous piece on g3...
Fishing pole people!
i really like the Bd6 Ne7 lines
Great example of how you can fight in the french!
"I'm gonna do this. The worst case scenario I lose"
- Eric Rosen
This is gold
20:45 "Could white prolong the mate?"
The horsey could defend the bishop delaying it by a move
Even better, white could play f4 and force en passant, *then* play horsey to f3! Boom! Crisis averted!
Edit: Yoo Eric looked into an en passant situation!
Really nice game
I actually play this same line, so that's cool
When I try to play like Eric - sacrificing pieces I just end up loosing because I calculated wrong or just miss mate in 1 and hang up my Q instead
Wow pls Eric if you read this: more videos like this french+long term sacrifice
Knife F4 was a killer idea
I always enjoy watching the French. Is 4...Bg4 more flexible than ...Bd6? Obviously the immediate c4 was reqd, as soon as ...Ng6 cd
The french offence
Great videos
Wish you had gone bishop c8 to attack the white bishop and create room to bring your knight out and check the king.
i hope to one day be that man who reached 1800 rating, so IM Rosen can tell me im "pretty good" 3:23 😂
This was a fun game. Aggressive play but not a loosing opening
Electric whisk thing -> milk frother
playing french aggressively is unusual, but ultra aggressive? woahh that isn't a calm eric forte.
They just couldn’t resist that en passant haha
Wow youre so good at calculating, if only i could 4 move ahead..
The move with the French name would lose the French defense game. How very French.
I want Jonahan Schrantz to play feisty french against Eric
what kind/brand of microphone do you use?
Johnathon schranz french defence blue print anyone?
yesss finally a french video for black
22:35
Instead of en passant, g4 g3 seems more directly winning.
At 20:08 can't he just play rook h8 if f4 because the pawn on g4 stops the knight or queen from guarding?
Yeah but queen sac prolongs the game a little
If the en passant line happened you'd have to take because it's forced
More French Videos!
22:09 if queen blocks don't you have a3?
Is anybody confused on what happen at 13:02 lol
Nice Game :)
Is that how that defend works?
I thought the mecanism was surrendering
Why did he play bishop g4 instead of f5 on move 7 I think.
i like french def
at 20:00 if f4 why not just swing rook over to h8?
@3:20 The guy who donated said the same thing in GothamChess's twitch stream. 😲😲😲😲
the video starts with *oooooo*
I don’t think ‘French’ and ‘aggressive’ can be used in the same sentence
French can be played aggressively. Winawer poisoned pawn is pretty scary for instance.
At 20:15, Eric is calculating f4, after Qh7, but does not Rh8 just immediately force checkmate after f4?
Yea I just checked with engine, f4 gxf3 Nxd4 gives away the advantage after Qd3, however immediate Rh8 after f4 is -8 and white has to give up the queen to survive
Oh nvm I guess he analyzed and saw this at the end of the video
Lol I just found your videos after watching 5up v MrBeast and you low key sound like a deeper, slower toned 5up to me! 😂 maybe it’s because I came from that video but idk.
16:15 why not NE2
In what world is this considered ultra aggressive lol
the french defense world
hi im only doing london system and czech pirc for black. gained more than 120 points so far. i just play longer than 10-0 and analyze them after. so every game adds on to my knowledge to the opening.
Try and throw some other openings in there too. London is a very slow and deliberate opening that only shows one style of chess. But analysis is a great tool to figure out how to handle different responses to your favorite openings
@@spearmintlatios9047 yes. for now i stick to it, i'll branch out as soon as i learn just enough of it that i can go standalone with at least 5-10 lines deep of 5 variations each line.

Very romantic chess
Two different scenarios where en passant is a blunder - /r/anarchychess in shambles.

hey toggi
your opponent needs to improve time managment. Blitzed out moves when you were on a big attack with critical responses
Got flustered by Rxh2 (doesn't make sense to me though, might be a relatively new player.)

Person 1: "I'm a French player"
Person 2: "Oh you're French? I didn’t know."
Person 1: "No, no, I play the French"
Person 2 : (confused) "So you play against Frenchs?"
Person 1: (Visibly annoyed) "No, I mean yes sometimes but what I mean is, I play the French defense when I'm black."
Person 2: "So, you're not French, you play against French players sometimes and you play against their defense other times but only when you're... black? I'm confused."
Person 1: (Steaming) "Look here you little shit. I play chess, and when I'm playing as black, I open with the French defense. It's a chess opening. Get it now?"
Person 2: "Ah okay,I get it."
Person 1: "Yes, finally."
Person 2: "So you play against a guy called Ches but you pretend you're black sometimes so you can surprise them when you show up with the French Defense but it's a move invented by Ches, so you're using their moves against them.:
Person 1: "I'm gonna kill you"

Tbh I never watched Eric before .. but this game was boring .. there was to much calculating of lines that eventually win in round about ways or allow room for a draw .. nothing was interesting until the rook sack.
