    Crazy how it went from a 5 to 4 and right before landfall back to a 5.

    Not so fun fact: Camille broke the record for highest US storm surge (24 ft) in Pass Christian, MS and held that record until 2005 when Katrina broke it (28 ft) in the exact same place.

    • @jeffbryan4019
      @jeffbryan4019 2 года назад +2

      Camille was 28 feet at Pass Christian . The figure of 24.6 was a measurement inside of a building on second avenue in downtown Pass Christian . The survey team stated themselves that water levels may have been a few feet higher since reliable water marks were no longer available in the storm area . Joseph Duckworth observed the 28 feet level just before the Richelieu went down . Katrina was actually 31 feet at Pass Christian according to the analysis from Dr. Jeff Masters .

      The first time I went to New Orleans was for a mid-summer wedding in 1988, and I was going to be there for a little more than a week. Just a few days before I left to go there, I watched a news-story-nostalgia tv show about ... Hurricane Camille. Stunning devastation, right near where I was going, so I paid close attention.
      The day after I arrived in N.O., I came down with a raging case of tonsillitis. I was slugging down bottles of Contac-brand sore throat syrup to give me moments of relief, because I didn't want to wet blanket the festivities for all of my friends there. I don't know what the active ingredient in that stuff was, but it must have been on the scale of morphine to have the effect it did. And yet one dose only lasted temporarily and then I'd take another dose.
      So it was under those conditions that I and some friends hopped into a rental car a few days before the wedding and headed toward Mississippi to meet up with some other friends somewhere around Long Beach. There we were, cruising the beach route back and forth between Gulfport and Pass Christian, looking for a specific sailboard on the sand that would be our signal. My latest dose of the magic syrup was worn off, the tonsils were shrieking in agony, the frigid car AC was blasting in my face and whenever the sun was boiling in on my side of the car I was getting dangerously nauseated from the temperature battle. And throughout, I kept remembering and picturing that right here was where Camille roared ashore, pushing that water surge over 20 feet deep. Would all those houses built on pilings be high enough to survive that? How much scouring does that amount of churning water do? Would the road we were on be destroyed like the one in 1969, or was it constructed differently? Would another "Camille" ever come this way again?

      That's right and the track vid shows doesn't show the real track of Camille's beginnings...it crossed Florida twice and then back into Gulf before landfall

      I turned 12 the day after Camille destroyed the lower end of Plaquemines Parish where my family and our friends lived. It was horrific. We weren't allowed to return for some time due to the flooding and debris field. We rebuilt on the slab that was left. Some people didn't even have that. Katrina took the rest of the end of the parish from what I've been told. I can't bring myself to go back down.
