1. Brian has very smooth "troll on command" skills, despite how giggly he acts most of the time, because he totally knew the science of the tiles when he innocently smooshed it and shook Jason's confidence.

6:18 Just for clarification, .22 actually penetrates really well. I'd be more scared of a .22 getting through that than a .45 (even though the .45 would punch a lot harder due to its mass). Smaller round at same/higher speed typically means more penetration. Physics is a wonderful thing that people should be more well versed in. (Not a jab at anyone, just saying it's kind of sad when some of he basic principle of physics are overlooked regularly. I am a mechanical engineer though, so maybe that's just how I see the world XD).

.22 LR does not penetrate well at all. The round itself is better suited for penetrating than .45 because it is smaller and goes faster relative to the energy, but it has so little energy it just won't do much. A solid .22LR round has 178 joules of energy. A regular .45ACP round has 483J, with special rounds going up to almost 800J. That massive difference in energy makes the difference.

You could have put tiles between the books, that makes it so the shot needs to go past the first tiles, into the book, and then, with almost no force left, encounters more tiles.
Federico Olivares actually real body armor uses a ceramic front to to shatter deform and slow the bullet massively then behind it is like a Kevlar composite to stop the bullet fragments

yes, but not ceramic tile. I believe it's a form of powdered metal compound of some variety.
for that you can check up game theory with Halo's fatal armor flaw episode, it goes bit more in depth with body armors, there was hard plastic, ceramic (still used but not as much), kevlar, titanium (impossible to wear)

It would have been interesting to see you guys make a couple copies of the armor and take it to a range and test versus various handguns/small arms fire (.22lr rifle/pistol, 9mm pistol/carbine, .45 pistol/carbine, .223 rifle) to really see what would happen. Obviously without Brian behind it! I feel like the .223 would punch through and the .45 would go through, but I have doubts on the 9mm and .22lr.
I suggest watching demolition ranchs video on homemade body armor it generally has the same idea
The books alone would not stop a standard .22 round up close [like they thought], and from a further distance by a .22 rifle. I think the 9mm would do it all, atleast it would incapacitate the wearer momentarily since the armor has no padding, or fragment catcher steel plate behind.
It's still crazy that I subbed at 33k and you guys are at 242k. Awesome! It's been a great ride so far!

Hey, just a heads up, even though it takes longer, removing the pages, laying the backs out flat on top of each other, and layering pages back over top of them with glue adds a large amount of resistance. Putting the hardbacks first, tiles second, paper third, with another layer of the hardbacks will always be the most effective. The hardbacks act as low-velocity armor, and "soft" bullet breaks, while allowing the tiles to be hard breaks.

I like how the bullseye is directly over the weakest part of the armour; where the books meet in the middle. Not even the tough spines of the books, the part where the cover overhangs and there is no paper.

There was a seam between the two sets of books that crossed the center of the bullseye... A hit with the (in)correct angle on that axe, and the only thing mitigating the chop would be some ceramic and some tape. Eep! Fun to watch as usual though, guys.

Good video. A few things tho: first ceramic makes for pretty good armor actually, just not against thrusting weapons or handguns and not in the way used here. Tanks for example use ceramics because they distribute force, and don't make a million shards of molten steel go through your tank.
The books would probably stop most commercial rounds if you put 1 or 2 layer sof ceramics in between. Because just as a ceramic plate doesn't make for bad armor because it breaks, a book doenst make for good one just cause it doesn't.
Book-tile-book has a bullet change mediums 4 times before entering your body, so it will lose a lot of energy. With the energy loss of the book the plates will be even more effective.
