  • Prélude à l'après-midi d'un Faune was originally written as a symphonic poem in 1894 after a poem by the same name written by Stéphane Mallarmé. The piece is said to be Debussy's most well known work and a turning point into modern music. We started with several other arrangements, finally settling on the flute and piano arrangement by Nikolai Platanov with some adjustments in the solo part. While it took some work, it was really enjoyable listening extensively to the orchestral version many times to make sure all the material we wanted was present and in the right part.
This was recorded live on July 28th, 2024 on the Emerson Salon Series in McLean Virginia. The pianist is Luke Ratcliffe and the saxophonist is Maureen Walsh. (That's me!) I'd like to profusely thank Jackie and Bill for hosting me on the Emerson Salon Series for a second time, their continued support, and all the hard work they put into the running of this wonderful recital series.
