Pink Floyd's 1994 studio album The Division Bell was a return to the band's classic sound with songs like "High Hopes," "Take it Back" "Keep Talking" the Grammy-winning instrumental "Marooned." But is it worthy of being listened alongside the band's 1970s masterpieces?
Special thanks to Todd Meredith for joining me for this one:

Pink Floyd is without a doubt one of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. They began in the 60s with Roger Waters on bass, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Wright on organ and Syd Barrett on lead guitar and vocals. Syd penned their early singles like See Emily Play and most of their 1967 album Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Astronomy Domine, Interstellar Overdrive). Their live shows featured unique light shows. However due to Syd's breakdown he was replaced with David Gilmour on guitar in 1968. This would become Pink Floyd's classic lineup through A Saucerful of Secrets, More, Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. 1971's Meddle would turn out to be an important staple for the band with the rocking opener One of these Days I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces, featuring a rare spoken vocal by Nick, Roger's echoing bass line and Dave's Slide Guitar. The flip side, another 23 minute piece, Echoes, featuring Dave and Rick on vocals, is often regarded as Progressive Rock's finest moment, from the opening ping of Rick's leslie piano. They would also perform both these songs along with earlier classics Live at Pompeii. The Obscured by Clouds soundtrack appeared in 1972 with tracks like Burning Bridges and Childhood's End. However 1973's Dark Side of the Moon would become one of the most successful albums of all time, staying on the charts for nearly 13 years and still a best seller today. Roger's lyrics dealt with the evils of society driving one to madness, while the music was nearly one entire inter-connected piece (making it difficult to separate for a playlist or a best of / greatest hits compilation). Still standouts like Money, Time and Great Gig in the Sky are favorites among fans. Their 1975 followup Wish You Were Here, featuring the opening and closing piece Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a tribute to Syd Barrett who even showed up at the sessions), is thought to be equally great, if not greater, as Dark Side. But tensions between the band were beginning to rear their head. 1977 saw the release of Animals, notable for its famous cover. Roger became the band's main frontman and sole songwriter with Dave occasionally sharing the mic and writing credits. Tensions grew during the tour when Roger ended up spitting on a fan in Montreal and coming up with the idea for The Wall to separate himself from the audience. 1979 would see the release of The Wall, the album and later the tour and film. Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 became their best selling single and Comfortably Numb remains one of their most popular tunes. But it nearly broke up the band as Roger fired Rick for lack of output, creating a greater rift between him and Dave. Recycling unused tracks from The Wall sessions, 1983's The Final Cut was Roger's final album with Pink Floyd. In 1985, Roger officially left the band. Dave and Nick decided to carry on reuniting with Rick for 1987's Momentary Lapse of Reason, produced by Bob Ezrin and featuring songs like Learning to Fly, On the Turning Away, and Sorrow. Roger sued to break up the band, but failed to do so instead focusing on his solo career. A Delicate Sound of Thunder, a live recording from their tour, was released in 1988. The Gilmour led Floyd would produce 1994's The Division Bell, a return to form for many fans thanks to the project originating from jams in Britannia Row. With Rick now sharing vocal and songwriting duties again, along with lyricist Polly Samson, the album included the songs What Do you Want From Me, Poles Apart, Marooned, A Great Day for Freedom, Take it Back, Coming Back to Life, Keep Talking and High Hopes became a fan favorite. It wasn't until 2005's Live 8 concert when Dave, Nick and Rick reunited with Roger for a short set giving closure for many fans. Syd never performed with Pink Floyd again and died in 2006. Rick died in 2008. The album The Endless River was dedicated in his honor. Nick Mason would join forces with Guy Pratt to form the touring band Saucerful of Secrets while Dave and Roger have continued doing solo albums and tours.

Hey all - I am aware that some people have very strong opinions about this album. If you want to post legit criticisms about the music, the lyrics, the production or that you prefer Roger Waters’ writing style, that’s fine. But if you write misogynistic remarks, I will delete your comment and block your profile. I get it, we’re all very passionate about Pink Floyd and the feud between band members is difficult to see, but that’s not a blank check for misogyny. Thank you.

To me The Division Bell is the finale of Pink Floyd and The Endless River is the epilogue of Pink Floyd.
I finally sat down to listen to The Endless River recently and I loved how it felt like an echo of The Division Bell and like the extended version of Cluster One I've always wanted. And Louder Than Words feels like a lovely reflection by Gilmore on the band. To me Louder Than Words is about connection and love being more important than all of the trivialities of life. And with how dark Pink Floyd can be that felt like a lovely conclusion, and I can't help but tear up at the "Go to heaven Wright" that the album ends with. I think a lot of people dismiss The Endless River because it came out so much later and feels like it's dismissing the poetic finality of High Hopes. But I think it's a beautiful album if you look at it as the last reflection by Gilmore and Mason on what the band meant to them. And that's beautiful in a very human way. It's like the last segment of Time. The song is over, but life goes on for a while longer and sometimes it's nice to be at home where you feel comfortable.
Having said all that about The Endless River. The Division Bell is one of my favourite albums ever and was my favourite Floyd album for a long time (it's currently Wish You Were Here).

Another excellent video. I've been excited about this one.
I also liked hearing Todd's input on the lyrics, when I listen to music, I rarely ever grasp and analyze the big picture of lyrics, I usually just catch a few lines here and there that I like, because I focus more on the music when I listen. There are plenty of great lines in this album that I always enjoyed before hearing your inputs on the lyrics. "Why did we tell you that you were always the golden boy and that you'd never lose that light in your eyes?"- Poles Apart. and "While you were hanging yourself on someone else's words, dying to believe in what you heard, I was staring straight into the shining sun" - Coming Back to Life.
Basically I knew I liked the lyrics to this album but I'm also not too critical or analytical with lyrics so, it's not something I could've gone into that much myself in a conversation. It was nice to hear you and Todd also speak positively of the lyrics.
My favorite tracks have always been What Do You Want From Me, Marooned, Great Day for Freedom, Wearing the Inside Out and High Hopes. The other songs are great too, Poles Apart, Coming Back to Life, Lost For Words. For some reason the only track that I would skip sometimes, and consider my least favorite is Take it Back, it just never clicked with me for some reason.
Whether or not we share the same opinion on Endless River, I still look forward to hearing your thoughts on that album. I personally loved it, there's also a bit of a first impression bias, because after Dark Side of the Moon, it was the 2nd album I had listened to by them, I was barely discovering the band in 2014, when a friend of mine who's always been a fan was excited for that album, we played that CD so many times. It was one of the albums that got me into the band, to the point where I just start trying out any album of theirs that I hear about.I also think the outtro solo of Louder than Words provided excellent musical closure.

In reply to your assertion about tDB standing up with the best of their 70's classics, I know you get some pushback for that, because I do in my capacity as "resident Floyd scholar" among my circles. From one 'expert' to another, I concur wholeheartedly. Of course I need to own my bias about it; this album was released in the States on my 18th birthday, on the very day I moved out of a very repressive home arrangement, and the concert later that year was the first show ticket I purchased with my own $ (talk about peaking early!!!), so yeah...tDB was the soundtrack to my journey into adulthood, and thus remains one of my favorite Floyd albums, and albums full stop.

I love Division Bell, I remember the first time I listened to High Hopes like it was yesterday and the feelings of nostalgia and closure I feel are just as real as back then.

You’ve convinced me to give this album a relisten, I’ve only heard it once years ago and found it a bit boring but I was a dumb 14 year old too. I find it really irritating, even as a neutral, how people in these comments write it off. It’s fine if they don’t like it, but you clearly have an emotional connection to it and if music is capable of speaking to someone then you should respect that even if you can’t relate. The whole “no Roger no Floyd” debate is very familiar to me, as a staunch defender of Steely Dan’s later reunion albums, so people writing off albums based on simple notions of what a band is and not what the music itself sounds like or does annoys me to.

I'm really happy to hear your take on this album. The Division Bell came out when I was growing up and developing my musical tastes; it's the album that made me aware of Pink Floyd as a band, though I probably had already heard some of their other work before then. I think a lot of people who dislike this album are too strung up on all the personal drama that went on behind the scenes (and still is going on to this day, sigh) and are simply choosing sides. I however was blissfully unaware of this and judged this album on its own merit: it's a really good album. Even now, nearly 30 years later, I still think it's a very solid album, that holds up quite favorably next to the Floyd '70s classics. High Hopes especially stands out to me as one of their best ever songs, a perfect cap on their career. Though after watching this video, I think I'll go back and listen to the album in full again; there are definitely more layers here for me to discover still.

I think that group of people listen to the album with their mind's already made up!! It's only sold 12 million copies which is not a drop in the bucket by any means!! Personally my favorite albums are the ones from the 1970s but I also think their song High Hopes could be considered in a top-10 of Pink Floyd songs!!! It's the most Pink Floyd sounding song since The Wall and maybe even since Wish You Were Here!!

Both fantastic albums. People can’t compare them to the earlier albums. They stand out on their own.

I agree. With everything. This is one of their best albums. Objectively, I would certainly place it at number 3, after DSotM and WYWH. Personally... it's probably my favourite Pink Floyd album. I'm not sure there are any songs on it I don't like. An amazing intro, powerful lyrics, a soaring instrumental, finishing with what it probably the best song they have ever recorded in the studio: High Hopes. I rate the live version of Comfortably Numb higher, but not the studio version. Speaking of lyrics, I think Samson is getting a lot of undeserved hate, mostly because Waters is wracked with regret. She is a good lyricist. Her work on this album as well as on David's solo albums is really good. It's not worse because it's not Roger Waters, it's just different.
All in all, an absolutely stellar album.

with only 2 studio records in the post-Waters era - (sorry, but endless river does not count) - momentary lapse has a couple of good tracks - but overall is weak - TDB is a better record - but neither can hold a candle to the classic line-up's output during the 70's - and no one person was responsible for that - it took all 4 of them to make that amazing run during that decade ..

Totally agree TDB is much better than MLOR. High Hopes is the best track for me and definitely classic Floyd. As a fan, I just think it's a shame that having fought so hard for the right to be Pink Floyd, DG has not done more with it over the years. Perhaps a theme for another vid?

Gotta be honest, I’m personally on the Roger side of things, but I love this album. And I believe more in no Nick, no Floyd. Nick > the rest of the band.

Yeah, while I love The Wall and Animals, I have to be in the right headspace for them. I prefer Floyd when they are breezier and more ethereal. That block of four albums of Meddle through Wish is classic and I rank TDB up with them.

I listened to this album after this video during a link Floyd binge and for me even though i adore Rodger waters style and the classic albums i think this album opens pink Floyd to a new style of lyrics and sound. I think what hit me so much avout this album is the musicality of the instruments used it just really sounds beautiful.
Its definitely the best pink Floyd albums along side meddle that isn't one of their big 4.

Great album, and great review. I’ve always loved this album. Like you said, lyrics, David’s guitar, Rick back, you just said everything I want to say. Also, I used to be on the fence about Yoko, I mean Polly, but she came long after the split and has made some good contributions to Dave’s process. It seems to work.
Thanks for the video, it was good to see it broken down and hear your thoughts on it.

Oddly the song that put pink floyd on the radar for me was learning to fly, that song and the video was incredible and was on rotation on MTV at the time. Fast forward to my senior year in high-school and this album came out and I got to go to the first night of the dc tour and it was amazing and hot. This album has a lot of.nostalgia from those days.

I agree with you on this album, it stands with Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. Yea sure I’m missing Roger but without him Dave, Nick, and even Rick were able to compose pieces together and create a really great Pink Floyd album. I listen to it easily every single day. Almost the ENTIRE album is a masterpiece, I really really love Coming Back to Life, Take It Back, Wearing the Inside Out, Poles Apart, What Do You Want From Me, & ESPECIALLY Loss for Words and High Hopes. This album deserves as much love as their 70s output. I agree on the Gold Fish.

I don’t get the hate for this album. Although I don’t place this with the great 70s albums, it’s still a great album. I still consider it the last true Floyd album and not the endless river. Polly’s lyrics can be hit or miss at times and I love the return of Rick. I still remember hearing Keep Talking as their first single before the album was released and was blown away when Dave’s guitar bled right into Rick’s keyboard solo. That was magic for me.

I was too young to see Floyd live in the 70s (born in 69),BUT I made up for it in the 80s and 90s. Saw Gilmour solo 4 times , Delicate Sound of Thunder 9 times and Pulse 6 times. All great in their own rights. I’d have to say when looking back Pulse was my favorite simply due to the additional material from the Division Bell. Concerts that are very hard to top. Although, I never miss a Porcupine Tree show whenever they are in the area. Lol

  • @ejd1984
    @ejd1984 8 месяцев назад

For me, when I first bought the album in '94 I have always thought Division Bell was in general about Waters: An eloquent middle-finger wave to Roger, and telling him "We're much better off without you." I think this is why he dislikes it so much.
A friend once summed it up that Floyd has made an album about each member that has left the band.
Wish You Were Here - Barrett
    Division Bell - Waters
    Endless River - Wright

A great album! Did you notice (I know you didn't mention it) that the four notes in "What Do You Want From Me?" after the lyrics "I'm not the one you need." are very similar (an obvious knod) to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"?

    • @JTCurtisMusic
      @JTCurtisMusic  Месяц назад

Hmmm I’m not really hearing that. If you mean the high guitar riff, it’s more of a classic blues arpeggio though I suppose the tone and effects are similar to Shine On’s iconic line.

The Division Bell, I remember buying the cd as soon it came out. It's strange, sometimes I love it, sometimes find it a little bit boring, it depends on my state of mind when listening to it. Marooned, is always great, a masterpiece. I spin more frequently the remix of A Momentary Lapse of reason.

Agree or Disagree is not relevant to me, as your review makes it plain to see - you give this album the respect I think it deserves. It has been on my daily listen list for most of the three decades since it's release. I was at work one day when one of our local FM radio dj's decided to play "What Do You Want From Me", and as soon as Gilmores' first note played I was "That's a new Floyd Album"
How many people can be identified by one note???
