- What is Staryu? What is Starmie? And what does Staryu have to do with the origin of Pokemon as a whole? Well... EVERYTHING really. In this video we talk about a part of what inspired Satoshi Tajiri to create Pokemon in the first place, and how Staryu is a direct reference to Ultraman, and other such Japanese super heroes.

Gnoggin, hosted by its creator Lockstin, is a show delving into the mysteries of Pokemon! (and other games sometimes too). Explaining everything there is to explain! Why is each Pokemon given the type it has? What are their origins? What is the lore of the Pokemon world and the design inspirations? And what does it all have to do with alchemy? Let's Go find out!
I also really like how Starmie is considered the mysterious Pokemon and represents both the sea and space: two largely unknown frontiers
Ink Blot woah
The sea isnt that unknown anymore. Guess that's a myth now. I just watched something on how they have mapped out most of the sea now. Interesting how much knowledge has changed in a few years I've been alive.
@@spicybeantofu Having radar/sonar maps and having actually been there are two different things.
@@leandersearle5094 we know whats there bro. we can use science to predict and pretty much scope the entire universe at this point. nothing really shocks scientists anymore these days. sure you make new discoveries but they are all similar to the usual deep sea creatures we already know about. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who realizes Dynamaxing and Pokemon in general are heavily inspired by Kaiju and various Sentai series.
I figured considering that G-Max Charizard and Butterfree were drawn or had some influence from someone at Godzilla
Coalossol is also based on Godzilla.
Gidoryia
Mothra
Godzilla
Mecha Godzilla
Well, the vast majority of Gigantimax pkmn are literally based on kaiju. It's most evident with Charizard, Duralodon, Copperaja, Hatterene, Dreadgnaw, Coalossal, and Grimmsnarl. It's actually hard not to assume they're kaiju from Japanese superhero shows when you get to Kingler and Machamp.
@@darkmask6473 giga Machamp. End of story.
Pokémon: let’s take some inspiration from our earliest conceptions and introduce Pokémon becoming Kaiju
Most of the Fan-base: Pokémon are bigger now? That’s lame
That is....ironic.
@@ZLunas Note: Z moves, gameplay wise, are just big move do big damage.
Mega evolution is just a stat increase and maybe ability change.
Gameplay wise, Dynamax is easing the most complex. It doubles the base mons health, changes every move the mon has to a different version that has a completely different effect, which affects the field in big ways, changing speed, adding terrains, inflicting bugs and debuffs. Oh and it's a 3 turn timer, giving time for plans to be made (unlike Z moves) and limits the centralizing factor of the mon so that it doesn't automatically dominate the game (cough mega kenghis kahn)
Personally I just felt like they could have implemented it a bit better than they did. Being able to use the overpowered gimmick of the generation before the first gym makes me feel less like I really earned the right to do it. At least with Mega Evolution and Z-Moves you had to actually find the proper items and have the correct Pokemon hold it first.
In SWSH you only need one thing in order to use Dynamaxing, and it literally just falls from the sky right in front of you.
@Maxus Devasteitor
Taking inspiration from something is not the same thing as ripping off of it.
Most of the non-kid fan base think this. I doubt children feel the same way.

Uhm Lockstin I have a question:
Can you explain the ecological balance, or shall I say, the Circle of Life for Water Pokémon as well as the food web? Kinda thought that most Pokémon eat each other but what happens to the others who just aren't hunted but keep on eating?
There population grows very high till food is scarce and numbers dwindle thus the prey pokemon numbers boom, to compensate the predators can now rapidly reproduce and the cycle infinitely loops.
Lol used the wrong “their”
Just found a source if you would like to read up on it. I learned most of this through Marine Science and Environmental Science. books.google.com/books?id=AFRQSuQGHiIC&pg=PA227&lpg=PA227&dq=what+is+it+called+when+predators+%22overeat%22+prey+relationship&source=bl&ots=cNma7IMbqy&sig=ACfU3U1qRyxUWT9eEWkXxfWG5_yJWAWXtQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjG3dvBqYfqAhVySzABHUrxBFYQ6AEwCXoECAcQAQ#v=onepage&q=what%20is%20it%20called%20when%20predators%20%22overeat%22%20prey%20relationship&f=false

They die eventually and feed the plant pokemon just like real life
Just to say, those pictures of “Tajiri” (except that one at the end for some reason) are actually of Ishihari. It is apparently a very common mistake.

also
in staryu/starmie pokedex entries, they keep referring to them sending signals to space via their stones.
and Deoxys has a stone said to send signals as well
coincidence?
Makes you wonder how deoxys plays a role on space and the legendary pokemon timeline. It kinda just crash landed on the planet (from what I remember) like where did you even come from? Did arceus make you somewhere else?
Staryu and starmie work for deoxys?
@@kashm9954 Well we know that Deoxys is actually DNA (possibly alien DNA specifically) that came to life or something like that
@@Attaxalotl they looks similar, so same species?
@@IdaeChop Perhaps... or they could just be another species that deoxys domesticated, like we did with dogs.
Hey Lockstin. Could you answer a question for me?
I've heard that in the pokedex the pokemon launturn can create enough light in the sea to expand for 5 miles. Apparently water and light are confusing and this somehow leads to launturn being the strongest pokemon. I would really like to know why it's that strong.
The pokedex was written by 10 year olds. There ya have it!
@@PedroHCF37 that theory is dumb and entirely untrue
@@theelemental3096 But the Pokédex says some obviously fake and BS things, like Magcargo being hotter than the son, the Galar fossils living in ancient times, or Tyranitar being unaffected by any attack.
@@cintronproductions9430 But fossils live in ancie- nevermind I just realized
Sunlight almost completely disappears after going 200 meters deep which is 0.124 miles.
Imagine how much power you would need to generate to produce a light roughly 40 times the strength of the actual sun.
1. I always thought Starmie was part of the group including the magnemite, koffing, beldum etc lines where multiples combined to form a greater being, which would tie back to the tokusatsu concept.
2. Why does Staryu have a gold band either side of one of its legs?
@Lockstin & Gnoggin - any chance of a video covering all those combining-type evolutions?
I think it might be a reference to how some swimmers and divers carry a knife strapped around that area for ease of access if they ever get caught or stuck in something.
I love how Ultraman was mentioned in this episode I’m a huge fan of the series and I’ve never made the connection between pokeballs and monsters capsules so I’ve been enlightened today Thx Lockstin
6:58 why does it happen so often, when people mention Satoshi Tajiri, they show a picture of Tsunekazu Ishihara??
Even on Google, looking up 'Satoshi Tajiri' gives you pictures that are not.. Tajiri.

This was really cool. I don't feel like you get enough credit for digging up all these inspirations and references.
One day, we’ll get a regional evolution of Starmie called Starwie.
Or Starwii U ... That sounded better in my head

What about Staruss?

I've always loved the way Staryu and Starmie sound in the Anime. Plus Starmie is still one if the very few Pokémon that have withstood the test of time again and again when it comes to power and appeal. It still has good Stats, an amazing move pool, great design, great Typing, and a decent Ability. Maybe it'll even return someday with some type of power boost/gimmick like a Mega Evolution or Regional variant. Who knows, but whatever happens to it I'm sure it'll keep shining bright and reaching for the stars.⭐😁🌟

As a huge Tokusatsu fan this makes me unbelievably happy! Thank you so much Lockstin!!
The Starfish with Eye trope can also be seen in the Kirby series with Dark Nebula.

I was not expecting tokusatsu to be a part of all this, but I love it! Any excuse to talk about Super Sentai/Kamen Rider lol. Heck I was surprised to hear Kikaider mentioned, I only recently learned of him while watching Kamen Rider Gaim. Honestly this whole video was really interesting, makes me appreciate Staryu all the more now.
Wow, thank you. You blew my mind with that reference of Ultraman's core... Also happy you talked about my love tokusatsu and will talk about it more!
Love it! Starmie is such an underdog that always deserved more attention!
Used to always use him in leaf green.
Staryu should have been water / fighting. Like a shureken
So Dymamax came out of a trope of these shows. This is why I love this series. So many connection some unexpected.
A little note: not only Starro was a prominent Justice League villain, but he was the one responsable for the creation of the Justice League in the first place. His plan of conquering the world is what made DC's big heroes to team up and start the roots of the Justice League
Seeing you talk about Ultraman brings me so much joy
Lockstin, this is an amazing video.
Didn't expect this for "origin of all", well played 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
One quick note though: that's not a picture of Satoshi Tajiri, that's a picture of Tsunekazu Ishihara.
Edit: except for the last picture at the end of the video, that actually is Tajiri.
I already loved Staryu and Starmie and now my love for these two pokemon has grown even more.

Staryu and starmie has always been two of my all time pokemons since the beginning, now you made me like them 10 times more! :D
I love Pokémon’s take on echinoderms. I hope that we get a brittle star eventually!
Thank you so much lockstin, I've been waiting decades for someone to make in depth comparisons between kaiju and pokemon. My favorite theory is how hydreigon's origanal design was supposed to sport tank treds as a reference to German panzers but would also be a referance to Dino tank an ultraman monster. But instead they did the design we all know and love which instead referances king ghidorah or Desghidorah
There is also oddly a tie to alchemy. There is this fish called the Echeneis (AKA the Remora) that was said to have an important stone in it's head called Draconite or the Cinedian stone. Which is a lot like the Philosophers stone. So that is likely what the stone in Staryu's face is, but that is my theory biased on my readings of some alchemist literature
0:24 Imagine how hilarious it would look like seeing lockstin recording that without editing
I REALLY did not expect him to bring up Shadow The Hedgehog of all things XD
i love love this types of videos that uncover pokemon inspirations that very japan and time-period specific! there's some universal themes and inspirations we can all pick up on, such as stars-sea connection for staryu, but sentai, kaiju and those capsules are such specific things the creators enjoyed and put into their creation. the ultraman connection is probably super obvious to japanese audiences, but lost in translation... thanks for surfacing this information!!

About that Ultraman segment around 6:00...
One: An ultra's little chest gem is called a color timer, since it wasn't just an hp indicator, it also was a literal timer cause ultra's usually from the Showa era couldn't survive in their true forms in Earth's atmosphere for around 3 minutes or so.
Two: that picture of an ultra with orange, sharp eyes... That's Imitation Ultraman, the disguise form of an Alien Zarab/Zarab Seijin.
Thirdly: The normal picture you were using to show the original Ultraman was Ultraman Jack, from Return of Ultraman. He originally was supposed to be the original, but for a reason that I can't remember, they turned him into a separate character.
Fourth: >Says Capsule Kaiju
>Show Kaiju Capsules from Ultraman Geed.
Fifth: Yeah I should mention this now, Ultras are an alien race...
This list gonna be too long cause I am that much of a kaiju/toku nerd.
Also, I guess I should just give out the fact that Godzilla basically was the father who started the whole Tokusatsu/suitmation genre.
PS: Kamen Rider could've been the reason for why Bug Types are good against Evil Types.
Edit:>Lockstin's gonna make a vid based entirely around Kaiju inspiration s
Yes... All of my yes.
Haven’t watched Gnoggin in a while but damn amazing informative video.
I can’t wait to see the upcoming video of the Kaiju that helped with the inspiration of Pokemon.
Same, I know that G-Max Butterfree is Mothra, Tyranitar is Godzilla, Hydreigon is Ghidora, those are obvious although I want to know all the other inspirations!
Great video! Also, this might be a lot of work but perhaps a long video talking about all the alien pokemon would be nice. Or did you already make one? Now I gotta check.
As a huge Godzilla fan, I could tell you were getting excited about the Kaiju inspirations in Pokémon so yeah I very much would love to see a future video only about that!!!
Other obvious examples I think you should mention in that future vid are: Volcarona also draws inspiration from Mothra, Hydreigon is obviously King Ghidorah, G-Max Dreadnaw looks a lot like Gamera, Muk draws inspiration from Hedorah (aside from the Blob, obviously), Slaking looks like King Kong, Giratina and Haxorus draw inspiration from Destoroyah, Pokémon with scythes for hands like Armaldo, Scyther or Garchomp look a lot like Gigan, especially Mega Garchomp and Final Wars Gigan.
You should also mention that the opposite is also true: the Skullcrawlers from Kong: Skull Island were confirmed to be based on Cubone (amongst other things) by the movie's director.
Staryu is the embodiment of an Ultraman reference
yes! Please a whole video about pokemon and the toku connections!
Yes! I want that video with Pokémon and the kaiju/Ultraman comparison.
Awesome video as usual! It makes me smile to realize that my favorite Pokémon had so much thought put in their creations. I always wished that the writers in the anime would touched upon Starmie and Staryu’s outer space origins in an episode, it feels like a missed opportunity because Misty owns both of them. The recurring Clefairy episodes would have been perfect to add her Staryu/Starmie in to show off that they’re relatives and beings from outer space. One thing I’ve always been wanting to see is Starmie’s core flash in different colors though it makes sense since it’s said to do it away from human eyes. 😅
Neat analysis. Thanks for uploading!
I'd really love a video discussing the Pokemon that are, or could be, based on kaiju.
