I bought a pair of Beckman factory seconds from Sierra and after wearing for a week it became apparent the leather on the left boot had very bad loose grain on the toe area that wrinkled up and made the two boots look totally different. Obviously as factory seconds, Redwing said they can’t help me with exchanging etc. Kind of sucks cos they were still around $200. Just something to think about when buying factory seconds, especially for expensive boots.
I've gotten Red Wings Moc Toe 1907 boots for $120 one time at Bloomingdale's department store in Santa Monica, California. TIP: Try to find department stores during sales/clearance seasons where people work off of comission. The sales team in the men's shoe section at that particular store worked on commission and it just so happened that the shoe was in a "clearance" and seasonal discounted "sale" rack... it was in the summertime. I talked nicely to the sales guy because they were originally listed for $199. But being nice to him and him wanting commission paid off and he worked out a special deal for me on the spot of $120.
No way that is an awesome story! Maybe you've got a talent for being a slick talker though haha -- but that's a great thing to note. I got my moc toes on eBay for $120 but would much rather get from one of these big department stores since they have great return policies should anything go wrong

I genuinely believe the guy was looking to make some kind of personal "commission best sales bonus" or "Employee of the month" goal or something, he just was super eager, friendly and in the mood hook me up with a good deal. And I even think he used his own discount codes or employee discount to do it for me. It definitely wasn't everyday! I like your tip about Sierra dot com, never heard of that store before. Gonna check them out. Also I find good discounts of Red Wings and other shoes thru frugalmalefashion on reddit.
Haha yeah the frugal men’s fashion reddit thread is one of my favorites! I mean I especially love seeing people thrifting old goodies and boots and breathing new life into them. I actually just picked up alden shell cordovan loafers for $35!
So 'factory seconds' means that there's some imperfection or something leading them to not pass muster at the factory I guess? I'm assuming it must be simply a cosmetic imperfection, surely Red Wing wouldn't let a truly defective pair go out tge door.
Exactly - as Luis noted, it is purely cosmetic which means like you said, Red Wing has a really strict policy with what leaves their factory. In addition to being reasonably priced it makes me feel good knowing Red Wing really cares about the little things that other brands might overlook

I find factory second jeans from Levi's at stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx and sometimes they fit even better than the “quality controlled” jeans from the retail store. For instance, sometimes the tag will say a certain way-too-small waist size (the “defect” like 31 waist, but really fit like a 32.5 waist), have a stamp on the inside saying "IMPERFECT" or something, but will fit my body and legs brilliantly. Strange but true!

The Mensch on Menswear eBay is tricky sometimes. I usually like to try on any garments that are imperfect at the shop or if it’s on eBay I at least request measurements to not be fully in the dark.

Yeah I hear you - sometimes certain sizes are tougher to find on sale. But Nordstrom had a sale a month ago that was 20% off your purchase of $300 and they had a full size run of iron rangers and moc toes so you just have to be patient. Also following reddit threads like /frugalmalefashion and /redwingboots helps

I tried on the Iron Rangers and Moc toes in the RW store yesterday and they don’t fit me right. The black smiths in copper are a perfect fit though. I bought them. Size 13, I’m usually a 14. I didn’t know that they offer a warranty and free cleaning service for the life of the boot. Seems worth it to me. I’m just wondering, do you get that if buy them from another store? Or is that standard ?

Yeah I got the same size as my iron rangers as they are made on the same last ( the 8 last) so I thought they’d fit the same. They seem to be a bit taller and so my foot is not held in place as well on these. I think that means they have a lower instep. I actually just bought the red wing insoles to try out so hoping they help
I’m like the same as you always hunting for cheapest price on high quality boots, as the number of my boots goes up I just wanna know, how you handle this situation my friend...like... I’m not gonna beat up all of them that would take my 100+ years
Haha I know I have the same dilemma! Like such a big part of heritage boots is being able to wear them nonstop but when you can get them at a reasonable price and end up with multiple it’s hard to find time to wear them all! Hopefully at some point they’ll all get the wear that they deserve!

Yes it's purely cosmetic. It does not affect the function or performance of the boot.
