I'm super new to musical theatre and i got into through Book of Mormon and Jamie, so i am very shocked and heartbroken to hear how rare diversity is in all these big shows
Thank you so much for this! I am still so disappointed with the many productions that don't cast POC in "usually white roles", like Alexia says, most of the time it doesn't matter, it doesn't change the story. We only have seen a black Glinda as understudy for the first time like last year on Broadway! WHY?! Fiyero in the book is described as a dark skinned character, why do we have so many white actors on stage playing this part?
Absolutely stunning interview- so positive and inspirational- takes all the negativity out of the past weeks. So proud of you . This gets the message over more than any thing else I’ve seen or heard. Xxxx
I thought it was ingenius and why the hell did nobody think of putting a black girl as elphaba for forever coz the role is painted! But thankfully i've seen that there's also been a black glinda recently =] Love these beauties! Crying with u, loves. Xoxoooooooooooo Thankyou ♡ Ps. Nobody should own islands and there should be no borders #imagine #liverpool
Thank you for recording this, it was amazing and had gave me and my family lots of food for thought, the girls expressed themselves brilliantly and I pray that their final wishes come true and we manage to move forward with change.
Thank you for sharing this, really eye opening to hear from two amazing actresses in their own words. I was so lucky to see Rachel in Hamilton and Alexia in Wicked and BoM and have been blown away by their talents! As hard as it is to listen to some of their experiences I’m grateful for them speaking out and sharing this.
So moving from these queens. I get about being the black person in a role that was on paper written as for a white person and how now in this role you feel the weight of your culture on your shoulders. You can’t help but think, people try to figure how to handle you before they talk to you and how you have to watch your tone so people feel comfortable around you. It’s so people don’t feel like you are aggressive because there is a little more base in your voice etc. I felt people were very judgemental without seeing the show. Criticised for being black in a beloved role. But those that came to see the show loved it. There was a review once that said they loved the original version but they also loved this new updated version. I had a lot of musical theatre black men / students contact me inspired by me in this role. It was humbling but I knew I was on the right path. In this country I was met with “Oh they are just trying to turn this show into Hamilton”. I was never criticised on my performance but the company putting a black man in this role. It’s a form of micro racism. You feel you stand alone at times like no one understands you because your closest friends are not in, in my case, musical theatre. So you do feel isolated with no one to be able to speak to. Luckily for me I have older friends who are filled with a lot of wisdom and knowledge that kept me going. I do have to say that the whole company , cast , crew, creatives even the theatre workers during my west end run and international tour have all been soo amazing with me and kind.
This is the weight we carry as black men and women in the UK. Commend both ladies for speaking out.
