This is a beautifully controlled piece of filming in perfect lighting which shows the enormous power of the sea (and the ship). You really see the dynamic responses of the ship in roll and pitch and would be excellent footage to show 2nd year Naval Architecture students as an illustration of what's at stake in good design. It's hard to believe that the pilot managed to get off the ship safely given the amount of relative movement. Hats off to pilots!

The power of the ocean is shown in this great video. The fishing boats that went in and out of the docks in its heyday would have been amazing to watch in this kind of swell.

@ Rod Thomas - It's called 'Overcarrying' and is occasionally the only option. Personally I think the Ship has turned too tight and lost all headway, the pilot cutter should be tucking in as the vessel makes a wide sweeping turn.

Impressive stuff. Makes one giggle to realise that in the offshore wind industry all the boats would be hiding in port in those conditions and the safety men would be saying that offshore transfers in Hs of greater than 1.5m are not possible to do safely!! Clearly they are, when done by competent people. There are lessons here for the wind industry, one of which is that most of the people that work offshore within the re-newables sector, aren't really competent to do so!!

    TGFD here.
I've watched this video several times.
I find all that is going on in the world today very depressing. I fear the end is near.
Watching this video is relaxing and enjoyable. The wind and the sea are soothing.
I admire the beauty of the British Robin and the ease of the bridge officer as he provided the lee for the pilot boat.
BTW, does anyone know if the pilot was able to disembark that day?

Most of all modern tankers have excessive stability due to very thick double bottom tanks.
Sometimes rolling up to 20 deg within 15 sec.
Double bottom tanks are specially designed in order preventive oil pollution in case grounding, but it lead for loosing seaworthiness. I remember old stile tankers they been much more comfortable then modern ones. Also it is not safe then vessel has such rolling.
Could not understand why roll preventing systems are not used while construction of the tankers?! Even small roll reduction tanks could prevent such Creasy rolling.
Can you imagine how is a fun for the crew while cross Atlantic passage then during 10-12 days rolling like hell especially during winter time.
Crew has not proper rest also such rolling could damage mechanical and electrical equipment.
Also for Pilot disembarking is a real danger.
Some new technical solutions to be implemented in order to improve the safety and reduce the rolling.

What really impresses me is how she makes that bootlegger turn to allow the pilot boat to come alongside in her lee.
But how did the poor pilot cross that vertical gap from the end of the gangplank to the pilot boat?!

Pilots are indeed brave people but I just do not like to see them risking their lives in such weather. With GPS being so accurate and the mapping of the sea is now so detailed , is it necessary to have pilots these days? I just wonder.
If we do need pilots, in such bad weather the disembarking could be done in a different manner. Knowing that there are free fall lifeboats these days, I am sure that a capsule could be designed such that in such bad weather, the capsule would be put on board before the ship departs and outside the harbour, the pilot would enter this capsule which would be lowered or made to freefall to the sea which would be later picked up by the pilot boat. I feel this could be safer that an unprotected pilot coming down the gangway with only a life-jacket, waiting for the pilot boat to come nearer till he steps on it, trying to hang onfor his life with the nearest handle!
Starting at 0.25 these pictures are incredibly sharp. Congratulations.

Pilots are necessary, all the more so with the qualifications of those on the bridge much in question. Maritime accidents are usually human error and GPS does not help.

I agree. There is alot more to handling and navigation of large ships when entering and exiting a port than a GPS can provide. It requires the detailed local knowledge and experience of a pilot.
