I expected him to earn a starting spot last year. Such a smooth runner, excellent vision and burst, with some real shake. Get it, boys! Go. Big. Red. GO BIG RED!

Rooting for Rhamir and Gabe to have good seasons, contribute in a big way, & stay healthy! They have stuck it out with us through everything (injuries, coaching changes, criticism, etc.) and loyalty should still mean something to us, especially in today's game. 🤷🏾‍♂️💯
That being said... let's go EJ! When I saw what he could do last year, I thought this kid should clearly have been the starter to begin with. Lol Can run between the tackles as needed but also possesses that burst to break for a big play. AND don't get me started on ball security lol He does very well on all accounts.
My hope is that another year will give him the confidence he needs to KNOW that he is the guy, believe in himself, and go be a DAWG this year! GBR! 🏈🎈🌽☠️

I think Emmit is the bell cow and it would be nice to have some decent backups also. NU is due for some good fortune in the injury department, but you never know. Good analysis, Wilson

Emmitt J̌Johnson is easily our best back. Like Rhamir and Donte as well. I also think you need 4 or 5 good backs do to injury and just prolonging how healthy they stay throughout the year.

Going to be a lot easier for the RB room now that they have a QB that can make defenses pay for stacking the box.

4.6 YPC is especially good when you consider Nebraska had no real QB threat last year, so the defenses he was running against would stack the box more heavily than they would if we had a true passing threat. He doesn't get nearly enough credit!

I slightly disagree. I everything about EJ, he's fast but powerful and tough runner. He does a great job of hanging on to the football. Also seems to be pretty durable so far, which is hard to do as a running back but is helped by the running back by committee.
The top 4 running backs will get carries. Which is why I don't think nebraska will have a 1000 yard rusher this year. I think EJ did get around 5 yards a carry last year. I think it is more likely 2 of those backs will get 7 or 800 yards
To get to 200 carries EJ is going to have to avg 16.6 carries a game, It could happen. I don't think it is very likely this year, I think it is more likely in 2025 and 26.

15,38 carries per game if you include a bowl game and I hope we can do just that. Taking it one step further: Last year the Huskers ran only about 51 plays per game, primarily because of fumbles and inability to be efficient on 3rd down. So, if they average more like 60 plays a game with good balance (30 run + 30 pass), EJ would need half the carries on run plays to get close. That would mean using other backs for most of the passing plays and then dividing the remaining run plays among probably 3 other backs (only 5 each per game). Not sure that is probable (possible maybe) but not likely unless there are injuries to other backs or someone cannot hold onto the ball and gets benched. If there are only two other backs in the competition, then his chances rise dramatically, unless one of those other two can outperform him.
Short version: I think EJ will get 150 carries, average ~5 yards per carry and end up with 700 to 800 yards. I am hoping that the rest of the backs combined can average 3.5 yards per carry making a total rushing yards of about 2300 for the season plus a bowl game. That's an average of 178 yards per game rushing for the team, very similar to the 185 ypg in 2023.
Add to that a passing attack averaging 250 ypg and you have an offense producing 400+ ypg coupled with a stingy defense. I think we could all live with that.
If another back stands out and gets the bulk of the carries because they earned it, we'll be even better off. While I'd like to see EJ reach his potential this year, I think it could end up coming in 2025 and/or 2026. We have at least 4 solid running backs (with a couple more possibly able to get on the field). Averaging close to 200 ypg rushing opens up the passing game; averaging 250 ypg or more passing opens up the running game. All we need is for the offensive line to show up and make it all happen!

@@MarkBern44 good take. 1st the line seems like the best it has been over the last few years. I agree there is a path and 2,000 yards rushing is possible. Especially being able to pass the ball, get those LB and Safeties off the line. I just don't know how it's going to break down.
Also if Nebraska gets a decent lead early in some of these games they will probably have more rushing attempts.

The running back looks good but saying he's the best running back Nebraska will have or ever had it is is a joke because that's Lawrence Phillips and the best quarterback you ever had was Tommie Frazier now I don't care who the quarterback is who the running back is if you can match those two you saying something cuz they went to three straight national championships and phrases in the college Hall of Fame and Lawrence Phillips what a won the Heisman trophy if he had enough said a lot of people in the state of Nebraska I said he's the best running back you seen in the decade well we haven't had no running backs in a decade if you really think about it but he looks good but what I really seen a lot of good blocking for him and he was just hitting the holes and using the speed I want to see how he runs in a lot of traffic I still get that type of yardage then you got a running back

Theyll be no bell cow RB to keep the room healthly across-the-board if Nebraska makes it to the 12 playoff it will be all hands on deck.
