  • One of Tokyo's closest natural retreats, made perfect in spring and autumn
A wonderful daytrip location from Tokyo, Mt. Takao is one of the nearest natural areas to the city at only 50 minutes by train from Tokyo's Shinjuku Station. Mt. Takao is a great spot for hiking, with a number of trails crisscrossing the mountain and leading to the peak at 599 meters.
Mt. Takao is one of Tokyo's most popular natural retreats, and its proximity to the city makes for a convenient excursion for those who love hiking or simply want to escape the city. Proximity creates crowds however, and if you've got the choice it's recommended you head there on a weekday rather than a weekend.
Head up to the Itchodaira area for one of the best collections of cherry trees in the greater Tokyo area.
During autumn, in a similarly popular natural phenomena, the mountain bursts into the fiery colors of fall-beautiful hues of red, gold and purple entirely transforming the area.
Near the base of the mountain is the wonderful Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu hot spring, great to relax in after a day's hiking. Not far away is the Takao 599 Museum, dedicated to the nature and ecology of Mt. Takao and its surrounds and filled with local curiosities.
From the top of the mountain, and on a clear day, you'll be able to see views of snowcapped Mt. Fuji. Get up early to catch the best views.
