Outgrowing God: Richard Dawkins in Conversation

  • Richard Dawkins was fifteen when he stopped believing in God. Deeply impressed by the beauty and complexity of living things, he felt certain that they must have had a designer. Learning about the theory of evolution changed his mind. In his 2019 book, Outgrowing God: A Beginner’s Guide to Atheism, Dawkins provides an accessible primer to atheism for readers looking to rethink some of the big questions that shaped his own path towards seeing the magnificence of a world without God.
In twelve fiercely funny, mind-expanding chapters, Dawkins explains how the natural world arose without a designer-the improbability and beauty of the “bottom-up programming” that engineers an embryo or a flock of starlings-and challenges head-on some of the most basic assumptions made by the world’s religions: Do you believe in God? Which one? Is the Bible a “Good Book”? Is adhering to a religion necessary, or even likely, to make people good to one another? Dissecting everything from Abraham’s abuse of Isaac to the construction of a snowflake, Outgrowing God is a concise, provocative guide to thinking for yourself.

Eleven years ago I read The Greatest Show On Earth, was THE BOOK..that blew my mind wide open...then The God Delusion...I went down the rabbit hole of this and everything evolution and geology...and after 46 years of pentecostal indoctrination..it took ten years to un-indoctrinate me and I made up my own mind...I took my non-belief in "other gods" one god further.

Your story reflects mine as well, with only negligible differences. I had tamped down doubts in my youth until I finally realized that skepticism of religion is not a bad thing. Joseph Campbell got me started and Dawkins carried me to the finish line, so to speak. The hardest part was dealing with family. Ty for sharing.

I was struggling to reconcile my pentecostal faith with evolution, but it wasn't until I had finally had enough, got brutally honest and asked myself the following: "IF God is who he says he is and is the truth, then he should have nothing to be afraid of by me researching the evidence to get the truth. I should only prove that God exists." Then in my honest research, I was able to see that in evolution's favour, there were mountains of evidence of an old earth, from astronomy, geology, archaeology, paleontology, geography, biology, astro-geology, chemistry and even astrophysics and mathematics, yet on the other side the evidence wasn't just limited, is was almost entirely absent and the book of Genesis was clearly incompatible with an old earth. Most biblical stories had no archaeological evidence where there should be, particularly the lack of a single spearhead, chariot wheel, helmet, sword, buckle, shield etc in the red sea in which the Egyptians were said to have drowned in. Yet evolution has made and continues to make accurate predictions such as the CMBR and the types of fossils we should find at different strata layers. If this were a court room, I'd hate to be put in prison on flimsy evidence when there's mountains of evidence to the contrary. Once I accepted that there was clearly only one reasonable, logical position, everything else that no-one could answer relating to Christianity started to make sense (e.g. do young children go to heaven when they die? how does someone with dementia get saved? why is God credited for good things but not bad things?). It still hurts to this day to know that everything I held to be true as a child was a lie and that there is no afterlife. I still need more time to let go of it all, but it didn't take any special book for me, just being intellectually honest with the truth and logic.

For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. How many millions of years did it take to evolve such creatures? Is nature so wasteful?
And if so, is our annihilation just as tenuous, at the whim of a madman?
Then life has no purpose, and evolution has no purpose, reason, or destiny?

@davy boy While I agree that we should outgrow gods, it is worth remembering that we are really still primitive ignorant people wearing suits and mashing keyboards. People still primarily think tribalistically. Thus, the reason for outgrowing gods should not be based on "herp they were dum dum we are SMRT", but instead based on "we have found enough evidence to show that this thing we believed in is false".
It might sound meaningless to make the distinction, but it isn't. If we use the idea of people of the past being ignorant as valid justification to discard their ideas, we risk throwing out the baby with the bathwater, throwing out what is broadly correct along with the dead dogma like religion.
Remember that these people survived in inhospitable times and managed to maintain rather stable systems despite their lack of knowledge. That means they did know *some* useful things, and weren't complete fools.
We should approach every claim made individually, uncaring as to whether it comes from the past or present, and critique it using logic, reason and science, based on the merits of that individual claim.
We should never justify discarding an idea on the basis of "it was a primitive ignorant people". Apart from being an ad hominem, you also risk justifying the discarding of ideas based on political views about who is "ignorant" in the modern world.
Set aside *when* the bible was written, *who* wrote it, and *why* they wrote it. Examine the claims made in the bible and compare with reality. Once you have answers to those, *then* you bring in the when, who and why, not to lambast them for "ignorance", but instead to ask "why did they make the claim?".
Avoid tribalism, even against the people of the past.

When we talk about science and religion, there's a mistake that often creeps in. We tend to mix up the terms: "believe in" and "trust'.
Defenders of the religious standpoint would often say:
"Well, you rationalists do not believe in God - so you do believe in science instead".
    Wel, not exactly.
We do not believe in science (like we do not believe in anything else) - instead, we trust the evidence to the degree our current scientifical knowledge allows us.

I think the thing I enjoy most about listening to any of of Dawkins' anecdotes, or indeed those of Christopher Hitchens, is that they're so frequently and so readily able to pluck obscure references from comparatively high profile literary works. Then, after quoting this famous person or that, Hitchens or Dawkins will continue and elaborate on their point and explain their ideas. This always left me with the impression that while these men were obviously very well read, they didn't rely on other people's quotes. Instead, while telling their own stories with their own ideas and their own points, they're able to include snippets of ideas from history's great thinkers.
Or in other words, they're able to use obscure quotes from famous figures as a window into their own thinking and ideas, rather than using them as a foundation for their arguments.

The ONLY person who ever died and then came back to life was Gandalf. And he only came back to the shores of the living for as long as it took to complete his tasks. So sayeth the Almighty 'Red Book Of Westmarch', or 'The Lord of the Rings.'
See? I can pretend that my favourite storybook is true, too! It doesn't make it actually and objectively true. Or maybe you've actually got some actual evidence that these stories are actually true? Do you? Do you have any evidence? Not more stories, mind you, but real empirical evidence that can be shared, measured and examined, that is repeatable and that is independently verifiable. Do you have any such evidence to show that these stories are anything more than fairytales and myths?
Ps: If you don't have any real evidence, you're going to have to face the reality that these stories are just stories and that they aren't true. The biblical Jesus and God and Satan are all just fictional characters in a fictional story. Your 'Heaven' is as real as Hogwarts is from Harry Potter. The argument about the rainbow is so true. I would compare it to music, you like a song initially because it sounds nice, but if you try to understand what the artist meant by it, it becomes that much more beautiful.

Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons' wives with thee. Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth. And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him: every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark. And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. Genesis 8, 16‭-‬22
      The rainbow with seven colours:
And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,
And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; and with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.
And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
      And God said,
This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: and I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
      And God said unto Noah,
This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.
And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.
These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread. Genesis 9, 8‭-‬19

@@ash8329 - What's your foundation for believing what you say? - And by the way: glad that you ask. I expect, that God is keeping HIS word: Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55, 6‭-‬11
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Hebrews 4, 12‭-‬13

Hypothetically, Presuming That God Does Exist, Then It Would Be Both Theoretically Possible To Observe Or Experience The Proof Of Such, Even If That Proof Could Not Be Physically Translated Or Transferred To Another At Will, And Essentially Impossible To Prove Otherwise; The Only Way To Scientifically Prove The Nonexistence Of Anything Would Be To Perfectly Know Absolutely Everything, Practically Impossible, The Only Functional Evidence Being A Complete Lack Of Any Evidence.
In My Opinion, Trying To Prove That God Doesn't Exist Is Somewhat Of A Fool's Errand, A Wild Goose Chase Of Endless Falsification, As Any Supposed Evidences Of Nonexistence Would Be Purely Theoretical And Philosophical In Nature While Any Reasonable Evidences Of Potential Existence Could Be Considered Scientific In Principle.
Wouldn't The Fact That Someone Had To Design A Quantum Supercomputer To Simulate Reality Be Evidence Towards Intelligent Design?
Only A Complete And Perfect Comprehension Of Everything Can Rightfully Assure Science Of What Is Not Possible. Within The Very Narrow Limits Of Human Ability And Logic And Reason, Science Does Well To Conditionally Prove What Is Possible.
Reasonably, Even The Presence Of A Detailed And Demonstated Explaination Could Not Assure Science Of Nonexistence.
