Tumnus' debut in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe makes me think of the Huntsman from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. He was employed by the Evil Queen to kill Snow White and bring back her heart as proof that he had done the deed. But he couldn't bring himself to murder an innocent maiden. So he told Snow White of the Queen's plans and helped her escape. Later he cut out the heart of a pig to fool the queen into believing he had done the job. He might have gotten away with it, had the queen not asked the magic mirror about Snow White's whereabouts.

I have just realised that Lucy's name is derived from the Latin for "light" (lux or lucis), so it is fitting that when Lucy (light) meets Tumnus (change in season and plant growth), it heralds the end of winter. Given that CSL was an expert in allegory (and the uses of allegorical names) and in Latin, this is possibly no accident. Well played, Dr Lewis, well played!

I'm not sure I've realized before how long lived Fawns must be, if he seems like a young man in LWW and remembers the time before the Witch 100 years ago, they could maybe live 200-300 years! So there could be more or less ten generations of Fawn since the dawn of Narnia. Ergo, Tumnus should have had memories of Man's exsistance, if not in Narnia (I'm not sure when Frank's line ended) then at least in nearby Archenland - so far as I know, it's pretty unclear what Jadis did to keep them away, maybe they were in Exile in Calormen or the Islands? I'm guessing Lewis hadn't thought about so much detail with his first book (much to Tolkien's chagrin, Jack was more a seat of his pants type of writer!), but putting the pieces together, I'd guess the "Is Man a Myth" is more of a curio from who knows where to Tumnus, rather then serious Academia - it could even be propaganda made by Jadis's decree!
I don't necessarily learn a lot from this series, but I did need the refresher regarding Fawns and Saytrs, and I never heard of Vertumnus. What's more, you do great retellings of beloved stories, and it's also a platform for some fantastic artwork would likely have never encountered. Good job!

Thank you so much for your engagement in this community. While I definitely don't expect seasoned Narnia fans to learn much, I do hope that there's always something that gives them a new perspective on these old familiar stories. I'm definitely grateful that knowledgeable fans like yourself are able to provide extra commentary.
Regarding Tumnus's age, I've also seen arguments that his knowledge of the old Narnia must have been passed down from his father and others before him, because within less than 15 years he is described as having become a middle-aged faun. Not sure which idea I like better: that he's old enough to remember the Narnia of old, or that he's too young to have actually met an actual man before.

    • @MagusMarquillin
      @MagusMarquillin 3 года назад +7

@@IntotheWardrobe Hm, good point, I might have assumed a little bit there. I think it's my memories of how Jeffrey Perry played him in the BBC series (even though he's past middle aged) made it sound like he experienced all that personally, but the book itself is doesn't covey his dialogue directly. It could be only his grandparents experienced Christmas and other seasons, which can make it much easier for him to not only accept the status quo, but ally with it.
And regardless if they have good historical records about men, the whole mythology aspect could just be about men still being alive today.
Yeah, I think that actually makes more sense - makes it a bit like Prince Caspian choosing to believe in the old tales - thanks!

    • @IntotheWardrobe

Knowing the little bit that I know about C.S. Lewis's life its likly he took that iconic image of the faun, and introduced himself through it in the story, since Thomnas starting out as a spy for the white witch but falling over to Aslan's side when the time to choose came is a pretty on the nose allegory to Lewis's own start in life of atheism to converting to christianity when it came time to choose.
Mabey this should be obvious and not need stating. But a neat observation none the less.

    • @katethegreat4918

    • @OSleeperTactical
      @OSleeperTactical 3 года назад +23

The reason narnia seems true is because it is, it's not true in the sense that you or I are real with flesh and blood, but in the sense that they are connect to and point to a world, like the narrator says, is more real than our own. Perhapse a person more real than us would be a better phrase, the narnia stories point to jesus christ and his saving work on our behalf and to his kingdom.
So like in the last battle we see a world getting larger and richer the more we push into it, that's what the kingdom of heaven is. Like a seed containing all the information for a tree, we just have to step closer and look deeper to see that the world beyond our is much more than ours, and we will spend forever pushing deeper in of our faith is in jesus christ.
So it is true. The picture of Aslan's country is an accurate picture. I dont think narnia was ever a place we could go to, but it points us to that more real kingdom we're pressing towards. Towards a very real Aslan's country that's more real than our own.
Lewis even said that Aslan's country was like narnia in the respect that everything good about narnia was found perfect and better in Aslan's country and everything lovely about Narnia is lovely because it's an echoe of the better country.

    • @dewereldvanabel

@@OSleeperTactical You're absolutely right, and I'm looking forward to that wonderful future.
But I really think that 'the shadowlands' are real too. In plural form. Or at least, there is no evidence in this whole universe that there aren't more worlds than this one, and I would love the fact that there wóúld be other universes.
Like Puddleglum said in The Silver Chair; "Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up, all those things. Then all I can say is that, in that case, the made-up things seem a good deal more important than the real ones."
So I don't know if other worlds exist. But I would love it. And that's why I choose to believe in it ✨
      God Bless!

I personally highly doubt that it actually exists. That said, it's completely possible that it's some form of alternate reality. If that's true, then maybe Aslan actually is Jesus, just in a form that suited the other reality more. Once again, I personally doubt all this, but that's the only way I could see it working.

That's interesting. I've thought of Puddleglum more like that especially considering how dreary his letters to the churches get after a joyful start and the fact that he too faces a serpent. He is also rather insistent that he is a Marshwiggle in front of a ruler much like Paul is about being a Roman. However Tumnus is a bit like Peter once he turns around especially when you consider that Peter means stone and Tumnus is turned into a stone statue only to be brought back to life by the breath of Aslan. Peter and the other disciples had the breath of Christ put into them before he ascended and the Holy Spirit came onto him at the day of Pentecost. The Hebrew word for Holy Spirit is Ruach Hakodesh, more accurately translated as breath/wind holy. Once that happens Peter starts doing what he should more closely. Peter renounced Christ during his trial and Tumnus had his moment at the beginning with planning to kidnap Lucy. One of the foods he offers Lucy was sardines and Peter was a fisherman. I suppose we can never be certain.

I (personally) think how Tumnus have changed side from working for The White Witch to being loyal to Aslan makes him even more noble.
In his days Aslan was nowhere to be found, his father died in a war that he didn't win, The White Witch basically ruled Narnia and there was pain, fear, and suffering everywhere. What choice does he have? And can you blame him for losing faith? I can't blame people who chose survival over goodness in their hearts. He almost did what most creatures in Narnia at that time would do which is turn Lucy in. But the moment he has to choose, he sees the light through Lucy and put his faith in Aslan who I assume he never sees in his lifetime or ever feels his warm spring.
Those who always have faith are no doubts strong in their hearts.
But those who choose to turn back from the wrong side, despite everything they've faced are the bravest of all.

I think you're over emphasizing Tumnus as being part of the "dark side". Sure, he was acting under instruction from the white witch, but this wasn't so much like he was "employed" by her as you cleverly hint at while being careful not to actually say it. He wasn't actively working as an informant. This was more a blanket threat to ALL Narnians given by Jadis - if anyone ever finds a human they should bring them to her or they would be killed. This was just a general Narnian law that Tumnus and everyone else knew of. A law which he followed because he feared for his life and then very quickly changed his mind about upon having to act upon it for the first time. Let's not make out that he came from a dark villainous backstory and went through a complex redemption.

I know Narnia is vey biblical but the ending of this show is wayyyy too religious sounding. I love the story of Narnia, but the ideology behind it and behind the message of this video is very strange. Should we not be our best selves for ourselves? Goodness should happen with out the intervention of a higher power, otherwise its out of kissing butt or fear. Which means it isn't really being good at your core.

Hello, I'm Heather, a new subscriber from Newcastle Upon Tyne here in England.
Here's a theory video idea be it a single video or series:
How did the events of the Narnia stories effect the other nations of the Narnian world?
What was going on in the other countries during the same time, and did the events of the Narnian stories effect other countries?
Fore example, what was going on in Archenland or Telmar during the days of jadis's reign?
Or else what was going on in Kalormen during the Voyage of the Dawn Treader?
Also just a little tip for you about pronunciation for Archenland's name:
Archenland is pronounced arkenland, the Ch makes a K sound. It's not pronounced like arch it's pronounced like ark.

I have the same idea with Eustace in the voyage of the Dawn Treader. He became a dragon, but Aslan set him free from the dragon skin. He got out his old skin and got a new skin (with normal clothes) from Aslan. This comes from Ephesians 4: 20-24

Sometimes I see alot of biblical stories in the narnia books .. Tumnus sometimes represented to me...that he was the converted St Paul. He persecuted Christians until he met jesus walking on a road one day and it changed his whole life and his beliefs from then on. In Narnia when he met Lucy , this was a the change that moved him from the side of the witch to the side of Aslan. It just a thought.. The depth of christianity and religion is huge in these books. Just like Trumpkin was the doubting Thomas with regards jesus coming back to life.. it was the same theme that he didnt believe that Aslan existed until he saw him face to face.. and he breathed on him...

Tumnus was in the employ of
    the white witch, having by
now resigned himself to a life
    without Aslan without the
    hope of being free again.
    However, when he meets Lucy
Pevensie, he won't be able to
hand her over to Jadis the
    false queen of Narnia because
    he knows it's wrong.
In fact, when she tells the little
    girl about it, she receives
    understanding and
    forgiveness from the latter.
That's why it then turns into a
faithful ally of the forces of
    good, and becomes very wise
    over the years.
Until he meets in the real
Narnia Lucy, and all the other
    main protagonists of the Saga.
    Where they will live happily
    ever after.
    See you soon. 😊

In Edith Nesbit's The Enchanted Castle : ' ' I'll not go yet ,' he told himself ; ' it's too early. And perhaps I shall never be here again. I suppose it is the night that makes everything look so different.'
Something white moved under a weeping willow ; white hands parted the long , rustling leaves. A white figure came out , a creature with horns and goats' legs and the head and arms of a boy [ Faun ].'
This imprinted itself on CS Lewis's young imagination to be regurgitated decades later ...
In CS Lewis Narnia studies never forget the influence of the children's stories of Edith Nesbit ( 1958 - 1924 ).

Tumnus is dualistic just as people are. The Narnia series is a children's allegory of Christ's redemption. If you esteem Aslan's character, you may be surprised to find it is based on Christ's character. C.S. Lewis was a serious scholar of religion & the author of very significant & highly regarded faith texts. As Aslan went to the stone Table for Edmond, so too Christ went to the cross for all who would believe on Him.

I must humbly disagree with your definition of a Satyr. Ancient Greek art depicted Satyrs as men with horse’s ears and tail; far more common descriptions of Satyrs are from Ancient Roman mythology, as men with goat’s ears, legs, tails, and horns. According to some ancient and contemporary interpretations, Fauns have somewhat straighter legs and longer tails and are much less wild, being given to less debauchery and can be a bit more timid and naive. With stronger legs, more abundant hair and longer horns, Satyrs are given to wild though sometimes wiser natures, and are a more lustful creature. There are some depictions that show very little physical difference between the two.

I think in reality, Mr Tumnus didn’t really understand what it would mean to be in the service of the witch. No doubt he was in turmoil as many were as to who their royalties really lied. As the white witch had indeed been in power for over 100 years. and many Narnian’s had never known any other ruler (and still nevertheless, hating her). and only heard of the previous kings and queens as well as Aslan from previous times before them. so indeed, many of them didn’t know any different and merely wished to try and get by, in the constant winter any way they knew how. After all like Mr Tumnus himself, they never really expected to actually have to turn a human in, as what was the real likelihood of that happening? All the while secretly waiting for Aslan to return and bring them freedom, and the prophecy of the four thrones to come true.

I think Tomnas was a friend of Aslan, that's why didn't hand Lucy over. To me it seems like he was just scared of the which at first and knew that what he was doing was wrong. That's why he had the change of heart.

It’s a problem that often occurs with fiction, especially really good fiction! I think that Lewis wrote The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe intending it as a stand alone work, that grew into something much more. But as it grew, the original story had to change and there were problems or plot holes. If Calormeen and Archenland and many more human countries were existing at the time of the White Witch, Men would not be legendary myths but known entities. Narnia is a small country compared with Calormeen (spelling? Sorry) and in a much wider world. The lone isles, telmar, and many more human civilizations supposedly existed when Tumnus met Lucy, and the White Witch had only ruled for 100 years, no where NEAR long enough in such a small hermit kingdom as Narnia is later portrayed to have been at that time for men to have been totally forgotten or relegated to myths.
He does a much better job of allowing time and practical science to occur to allow the mythological creatures to disappear from Narnia during the ten Caspians reigns, but I imagine that if we were to have asked Lewis right after writing Narnia if there were any humans living for miles and miles or for centuries in any physical direction of Narnia, he would tell us that at the time of Lucy’s visit there were no humans at all in the whole of that world, nor had there ever been any of if there had been not for a very long time.
That’s how LWW comes across to me, while the rest of the series reverses this initial impression.
It seems the best fiction is just written with no specific plan in mind where as authors who set about world building before writing are constantly forced to bend their characters into unnatural ways to fit with the world. The very few (Tolkien) who can design a world AND tell a story that fits within it, are the undisputed masters. This is not met to disparage Lewis, who I enjoy far more than Tolkien, and especially owe a great debt too for my faith (Lewis’s works are why I am a Christian and how I have mentored many young believers, both woth his fiction and non fiction) it just means that the allegories of Narnia are the things to pay attention to, and the specific timelines (“facts”) are not as important.
That said I am really enjoying this channel!!!!

    • @Narnian_knight
      @Narnian_knight 2 года назад +1

Lack of human contact is reasonable. Telmar can be explained away as not yet having begun contact with Narnia. Islanders would have good reason to avoid a dead winter land. Calormenes were padded by a desert and saw Narnia as a fruitless ice land filled with a powerful enchantress and demonic beings.
Archenland does pose more of a problem. Lune's kingdom seems to have been running normally without batting an eye. Archenland and Narnia are as old friends and allies in a mere number of years.
The witch's reign would certainly hinder, but not necessarily prevent contact with the animals. Perhaps the winter made the southern mountains impassible; not like many Archenlanders would like going there anyway. We must also remember that Lantern Waste is a good distance north of Archenland. However, even without contact, memories live on. Narnians still believed the prophecies and recognized the Pevensies as SoA&DoE. Tumnus's books don't necessarily reflect his position. _Is Man a Myth?_ sounds rather black dwarfish to me.
All things considered, I don't think the near legend status is too unreasonable. Besides, a good deal of reign by fear and propaganda has sown doubt in less time, no doubt.
