I have noticed a peculiar smell since we painted a bedroom and a hallway. It’s been over a year and the smell comes and goes. It’s really bad when the windows are up and the suns shines through. I’ve just discovered it’s the walls. Is there anything that can be done to get rid of this smell without repainting.
The walls would have been painted with a latex paint that is low VOC. This problem is different than the VOC problem when you use oil-based paint for trim or priming stained walls or ceilings. I've heard of people having this issue with a "cat urine" type smell or a "fishy" smell. It sounds like the paint was old and maybe it didn't cure properly? The low VOC or no VOC paints have some ammonia in them and could be off gassing when it's heated up when the sun is shining in. Ammonia isn't a VOC but could be causing the smell. One solution would be to prime the walls with an oil-based primer like Kilz to seal the previous coat. This primer will have VOC's and will smell strong at first. Just use ventilation during the process and make plans to stay outside of the home for a day or two. Another option would be to prime it with a product like Zinsser B-I-N Shellac. After the walls are primed you can repaint again. I would contact the painter so they can get in touch with the paint manufacturer rep and see if they can discount or comp the new materials. They will probably want to see the original receipts but that should give you some insurance in case it happens again. I hope this helps and you get your problem solved quickly and easily!
Hi moved into an apartment that was painted almost a month ago and there is still a paint smell. It is winter now so it is cold. is there anything you would recommend? I feel as if the paint smell has gotten better but is still there. At the moment im thinking of buying packs of charcoal or putting out bowls of vinegar.
Hi Eddie, sorry to hear about your apartment issue. Since it's winter and cold outside, it's hard to ventilate. Using your heat with no ventilation is helping with off gassing but you really need to vent it out and get new fresh air in. I would ask the landlord if they can help you pay the heating bill and open your windows for a while each day. The packs of activated charcoal should help too. Best of luck.
I did killz spray paint in a few spots above my tub an it won’t go away !!! I have to keep my bathroom door shut and have the window open n it’s not helping at all
Yes, the Kilz Original spray can has the strong vapors. If you just used one can and sprayed a few spots, the fumes should go away with ventilation after a couple hours or maybe a day. It is the best product to use if you were trying to cover mold/mildew stains or water stains.
@@SwellContractors wasn’t even half a can used just under half it’s been days and my bathroom is still awful and I have the window open and a 3m air purifier in there still with the door shut . 😪

I come here to check the solution of my issue as I had a headache and not feeling for few days as the Painter I hired, mix a gas in the paint when I ask him to paint my whole room and cabinet. He said he mix gas to paint so no cockroaches will come because of the smell. But now I suffer because I don't know how many days that the smell of the gas will be gone. I don't like the smell of my room. 😫😢🥱
Sorry to hear that Sheryl. Hope you feel better soon. The painter may have mixed in an additive called Penetrol which thins the oil based paint to help it flow easier. This product has low odor and doesn't degrade the paint. If you had your entire room painted in oil based paint, it will take a while for the fumes to go away. Definitely try the methods I mentioned in the video and try to stay somewhere outside of the home for a bit. On the bright side, oil based paint on your cabinets will be more durable and last longer than if it was painted with latex. Best wishes! Thanks for watching.
@@SwellContractors Wow. Thank you so much for your response. I do appreciate the information/ tips too that you shared. This is very helpful. Glad that I saw your video on the top list. ❤🤗😍
That's the biggest idiot painter i ever heard of. He should be held accountable for trying to poison u and ur family. Its madness what he did. Those things are extremely toxic and should never be breathed. Get out of that room asap and look for a solution.
@@Organic98 Thank you. I don't even think that's a poison. I appreciate your comment. I will talk to him also regarding this. Because he used to be a painter a long time and for sure he always mix gas to a paint which can harm people. Yeah I stay for the meantime to my mom's place until the smell of the gas gone. I appreciate your comment. Thanks so much. 🤗
