As an Edmontonian its weird when the Oilers moved out of Rexal place, it feels like the end of an era. So I feel the pain of saying goodbye to the Saddledome, it is such an iconic piece of Calgary, and will be missed. Now as an electrician that works in property maintenance on alot of old buildings, to the "why cant they re-use it, renovate it, re-purpose it, use it as a shelter" crowd, just stop. You have no idea the massive amounts of time and money that can be burnt, to achieve very little down that road.

There could be a no compete clause with the new arena that prevents any events to take place at the SD. I know this was the case on StL back in '95.

Yep. Our WHL team stadium (Prince George) was renovated for so much money that for the same price-tag they could've built TWO new, better designed complexes. Just an absolutely ridiculous waste of money. But what more could be expected from the least transparent city government in Canada. Rich developers getting richer off the backs of the taxpayer. A tale as Canadian as maple syrup.
Glad Calgary isn't making the same mistake, and that the rich developers will not be getting as rich as they could have.

As an Oilers fan, I'm happy about you guys getting it done and getting a new arena. Roger's place has been nothing but awesome for us up here. The only thing that makes me upset is the double standard that we get from the Alberta government all the time.. When we asked for money from the provincial government for our arena we got a whole "f you build it yourself." So to hear their contributing 300 mil towards that project kind of pisses me off.

As an Islanders fan, we went through a long struggle to get a new arena built. They broke ground on UBS Arena in September 2019 and it opened in November 2021 but the Islanders were awarded the plot of land at Belmont Park in December 2017. The Islanders lease at the crumbling Nassau Coliseum expired in 2015. Naasau County voters rejected the Lighthouse Project in August 2011 and the Islanders had to play at the terrible for hockey Barclays Center. These things take a LOOOONNNNNGGGG time to get moving. This new arena is DESPERATELY needed for the Flames and for the city of Calgary. The Saddledome is an absolute dump.

Luckily the calgary stampede is very sentimental about historic items. i have little to no doubt that there will be some things saved from the saddledome. especially the iconic goalie mask hanging from the side of the entrance. that one seems like a no brainer to keep. there are a few iconic items saved from the corral before it was demolished so theres reason to see why they would do it for the saddledome as well. my biggest hope is that theyll give the old girl a proper send off. im thinking a v for vendetta style fireworks display leading into a classic dynamite demolition.

As a Flames fan watching from a long way away, it doesn't seem to me the Flames have actually had a lot of great memories in the Saddledome. They'll finish with one Stanley Cup championship in their Saddledome Era, and they won that on the road. And if I was to pick out the one most symbolic game in the history of the Saddledome it would be game 7 in 1991 vs. Edmonton. After Fleury wins game 6 in OT with the wild celebration that followed, and supposedly all the momentum going the Flames' way, of course the Flames lose game 7 at home. A big buildup to a bigger let down--the Flames history in seven words.
Then there was game 2, again vs. Edmonton two years ago in what was laughably called "The Battle of Alberta", which was about as much of a battle as General Custer vs. the Sioux Indians. Oh well, some teams are winners and some are losers, and some are teasers, which are losers that look like they'll win right up to the minute they lose again. That's our Flames!

On one hand, saying goodbye to the Saddledome will be tough. That's been a defining part of the Calgary skyline for four decades now, akin to SkyDome in Toronto. There's also the three Cup Finals, and 1989 championship to mention.
Nothing ever lasts forever, as Tears for Fears once lyricized. The Saddledome's had a good, long life for a sports venue when you think about it, and Calgary badly needs a new sports venue. WinSport renovations aren't good enough. So it's time.

But, the last time I went to a concert there, I said it would be the last time. Its a horrible building acoustically, and now having TWO buildings in Alberta to attract major acts will be awesome.

Long time Oilers fan here, I was so happy to Premier Danielle Smith, big time flames fan, publicly force the eco-terrorist mayor into the deal. I'm incredibly happy for Calgary and Alberta, mostly because it really pissed off the NPC crowd.

As an Edmontonian, I am really happy that you guys are getting a new arena, you desperately need one in spite of how cool and iconic the saddle dome is, however i am upset with the funding, where was that for the oilers?? why are we paying for your stadium?? i understand it was a political move but it still bothers me

well different government at the time with leaders that werent as willing to invest in public infrastructure. Smith has stated that the same financial support is available to edmonton should there be a project for it. also helps that the city of calgary is using municipal funds to hold up their end of the deal meaning taxes and public fiscal responsibility will remain where it is at the moment. Calgary stampede is doing a land swap where CSEC will control the land the new arena is on and stampede will take over responsibility of the saddledome land.

I’m an oilers fan in Calgary and believe me they need a new arena, it’s not even a question. Yes there’s memories there, but it’s horribly outdated and jsut feels tiny and overcrowded by modern arena standards.
I still am not happy about the deal the Calgary ownership group got and hate that it was an election based promise. The Calgary entertainment group should have to pay much more from the start instead of the province.

I've never had a smile disappear so fast when you said the fate of the Dome. So much history, from national down to personal. I'm all for such a upgrade in facilities, but at the cost of destroying such a symbol of my beloved city? It's a bitter taste for sure

Can't get behind the money handed over to billionaires. Been a STH before and longtime fan, but we are in a housing crisis and handing this kind of cash to someone who doesn't need it is a bad way to do things. Economic study after study has said stadiums do nothing for injecting cash into an economy. Edwards can afford his own place as far as I am concerned.

I gotta sympathize with Calgary citizens that don’t follow or like hockey seeing the amount of cash thrown by their city and provincial government at this project, while the older arena was still fine and loved.
But at least your city got a team, Quebec city did the same without one !

saddledome is well loved and iconic, but it is far from fine.

    • @benoitrobitaille5235
      @benoitrobitaille5235 Год назад

Far from fine according to who’s narrative that’s being pushed ? If this was a lower league arena, a municipal arena or else nothing would be done outside of what was necessary.
The truth is that this league standards keep changing and rising to push teams to force the hands of local/provincial or state level politicians to throw money at arenas that neither the team or league own.
In order to greatly reduce cost, keep all the power and help rising the entire league value which makes it more and more costly to enter the league artificially, but ultimately raises considerably your team’s value.
If a government doesn’t want to participate in the racket, other governments are more than willing to, for all sorts of reasons.

From Toronto... live in Kingston, now. I went to see Leaf games at Maple Leaf Gardens. It felt weird seeing the Air Canada Centre for the first time, but it eventually turned the area into a livable, workable and entertaining area. When you end up seeing that saddle crack like that, all logic becomes priority so much that even your mayor turned off her woke agenda for two minutes and then gets a deal done. It just had to happen. Good stuff....That broken saddle lol
