    Only one rule when it comes to living here. Don't bring all of your bad luggage with you. Live your best life here and get on with your life. My dad was in a German Concentration camp during WW2 and a Displaced person after WW2. When he got here, he met my mum and started a family and the only thing he ever wanted for us was to grow up as Aussies. As far as friends go - we're having a BBQ this weekend, there will be Turkish, Irish, German, Italian, Polish, Dutch, South African and our usual Aussie friends all represents at the BBQ. You'll love it.

      Do we really want someone whose idea of hell is to do their own housework? That sort of entitlement is repugnant.

    • @kayelle8005
      @kayelle8005 Год назад +2

      @@comjag it’s such a different culture though. It’s just a norm there. My friends in very middle class jobs have daily cleaners. Not something you can afford to do here even if you wanted to unless you’re very wealthy. Not sure it’s fair to say it’s an entitlement mentality. Just something they wouldn’t be used to doing, and may not know anyone who does so they don’t have a clear perspective on it. They don’t understand the effort involved or the time it would take. Could obviously start practicing now in at least some areas of their home.

    Roxanne I’ve been to South Africa seven times in four years and I love your country. I even considered splitting my time between Australia and Cape Town. What I can say is many security things you take for granted are things you will never have to worry about here. If safety is your number one concern for yourself, your partner and your future children than you will be safer in Australia. Much safer. Your family can visit and you can visit them. Your parents will miss you but also likely be happy knowing you are safe and happy. Washing clothes and cleaning a home aren’t that difficult and well worth the effort for the higher overall quality of life. The thing is you can always give it your absolute best for four to five years and go back to South Africa if you don’t like it here. You’re still very young. It doesn’t have to be permanent.
    Aussies will be interested in your country and culture and will also appreciate it if you try to understand our culture and adopt the aspects you like. You can also tease us about whether our BBQs are a patch on your Braai and there’s always cricket and rugby to joke about. Electricity blackouts will be much rarer and water supply is more secure. Alcohol is way more expensive here. Really great gin though. Food is on par. Healthcare is better. Roads are safer. You will rarely see barbed wire on houses or security guards patrolling areas - no need.

    What a brilliant letter. So many good questions and well answered too. Crime would be enough to leave South Africa. Losing a cousin would seal the deal for me. Not having servants..well..electrical engineers earn good money so having a cleaner for a few hours every week or so shouldn't be an issue. For a young couple, being able to afford a home is a tough 1 but most people when they start out don't live in mansions and being safe is No 1.
    Probably the biggest issue for assimilition is not getting ahead of yourself in attitude. Australians are an easy going lot and if you think you are ahead of the pack, you'll most likely find out where you stand.
    As you said Maz, life is about taking a risk, a calculated risk. If they don't like living in Australia, they can always go home but I'd find it hard to believe they would want to going by this letter. Feeling safe has to be no 1 on the list and they'll find that in plenty of areas in Australia.

    I reckon Jade should just do the paperwork. It takes forever and a million things can happen. If its granted you can change your mind OR you can take the chance of a lifetime and see what its like. And you can come home again if it doesnt work out. But theres nothing worse than years dosn the track wondering what it would have been like. JADE DO THE PAPERWORK 😄

    There is a slight issue with immigrants from more stratified cultures adjusting to Australia. Aussies (and Kiwis) have a very informal approach to authority and what I would describe a militant egalitarianism. 🙂 If you've come from countries which have servants and the phrase "Don't you know who I am?" is never far from your lips then it may need a bit of adjustment. Australian WILL make fun of you and then get a bit annoyed if you still keep on doing it. My previous boss was on the office wash-up roster just like everyone else and it was very difficult to get some migrants to call her by her first name when they came to the office. The good thing is that every job has value and you'll never be put down because of what you do.

    You’re born to do this stuff.
    Jodie from the Keyush (dog) Channel - when she opens gifts sent to them say around Christmas - the quick notes get read out during the episode But the long ones … she thanks them for their gift & correspondence then tells them she will read the rest off camera,. She then packs away their letter and opens the next.
    No questions asked and it works really well.

    I think the change of government had something to do with it. I had been in limbo for four years and as soon as the government changed, I got my permanent residency within days of submitting additional documents. Seemed to me that they just jumped in big piles of application papers accumulated over the course of the previous government.
