Great reaction :) Lucia is a Swedish tradition (maybe other nordic countries celebrate it as well I'm not sure) which we celebrate on the 13th of December. Saint Lucia was a christian martyr and the story about her is that she lived during a time when it was forbidden to be christian and she would smuggle food to other christians in hiding. She had a candle on her head to be able to carry more food and that's why when we celebrate, the Lucia has a crown of candles on their head. The red band is to symbolise blood since she was killed for what she did. Most Swedes are not religious but it's just a fun tradition where we sing traditional songs and eat sweets. Pretty much every school has it's own 'Lucia train'
I've learned so much about christmas traditions in other countries from tv shows, like in Wtfock (skam belgium) it was so interesting to see things I had no idea about, that we don't do in the U.S.
his facial expressions are everything, I genuinely feel like you can understand the entire storyline just from the looks on their faces throughout the show. They're so good with expressing every emotion.
Exactly! And everything is so simple. And natural, it's literally one if the best shows I have ever watched. They deserve everything in this world for this.
Just thought you may want to know since it came up, Wilhelm's bodyguards answer to the Swedish government. For Royals, that's where their security comes from. The bodyguards don't answer to Wilhelm or the Queen - so they don't have to relay anything back (I found it interesting when I found out!)
The security folks are required to be very discreet. Otherwise the folks they are protecting will try to hide from them, which makes protecting their folks that much harder. So here in the US the secret service assigned to the president's children will never report what the children get up to.
I did see someone mention that at least one of the Scandinavian/Nordic Royal families have stated publicly that their children’s security details are actually instructed not to ‘report back’ anything which isn’t strictly related to safety matters. Malin and the other bodyguard must know, tho’, the boys are hardly subtle.
This makes me suddenly think that Alexander got caught because the guard was looking for Wilhelm and found Alex wandering the grounds with the drugs by then Wille was at the field and the saw him and Simon return. I can't imagine them being very stealth when returning.
just wanted to say that; yes, we are a very non religious country like you said but those who are christians are lutheran protestants and not catholic even tho we celebrate Lucia which is a catholic saint (protestants don't "believe" in saints). Lucia is seen as a part of the Christmas holiday that everyone celebrates unattached from religion (despite it being religious) since it's such an old tradition in Sweden
@EDITS yeah ik, jul ≠ Christmas but what I mean is that Lucia is seen as a part of the Christmas holiday celebration not that Christmas is a reserved Christian holiday if you get what I mean
First Nathan is super cute. The first half of this was the most perfect boyfriend material and then it just breaks your heart. Can't wait to see Ep. 6 react! Great job guys! 🤗
You were right about the naming of the fish, Simon was told he had to name the fish just before they shot this scene and Wilhelm suggested he use the names of the band members from FO & O. This is the band that Omar was previously in
Loved the reaction! I've seen so many people freaking out about the candles. When Lucia is done with younger kids they always use battery-powered candles. When people get older (like in high-school or the official televised procession) they will use real candle but the girl who is Lucia (the one with candles on her head) will have a damp cloth on her head to prevent fires.
2:42 he's not exactly bi, he said he likes both boys and girls and had dated both but he doesn't want to label himself, cuz he thinks he's still young and doesn't want to say anything that might change in the future. Edvin is pretty much straight if I'm wrong, but he too doesn't want ti label himself.
yep, you’re right! this is pretty much exactly what he said in a swedish queer magazine interview back in 2019. love the fact that an actual queer actor got this role. ♥️
that's pretty much what bisexuality is tho... like, i respect that there's (younger) people may not feel comfortable with their orientation just yet but the lengths at which some go to avoid using the Big Bad B word at all costs is super frustrating at times because we, who are okay and comfy calling ourselves it, still got bad rap and the avoidance just plays into it imo
@@iyawakarehen I love that young people have an accepted option to not ‘choose’ these days. I’m knocking on in years so I do remember when it was almost always assumed that Bi = Gay (but not yet). The friendship that Omar and Edvin have built in real life is a delight. Edvin is certainly a wise and very kind head on young shoulders and they both seem to get a huge kick out of life.
@@iyawakarehen i think the thing with Omar specifically is that he doesn’t want his sexuality to be like the “thing” that the media/public latches onto. he has alluded to this in different interviews throughout the years. like, yeah he likes/dates boys and girls, but that’s such a small part of who he is as a person. existing publicly without a label gives him the freedom to kind of figure himself out without being “confined” to one category.
@@Courtney-Jai only the fish's names were improvised on the spot. nothing else. it's just a rumor a fan started on tiktok. the intimacy coordinator repeatedly refuted it and was adamant about how everything was pre decided and choreographed.
Lucia is kind of a weird tradition I must say as a swede. I think we do it to get some light into the coldest and darkest months to be honest. I was in a choir when I was younger, one year I was Lucia and wore the same kind of crown with candles in it as Sara does in the episode. I think the crown with the candles in it is because of the history of Lucia. I think she gave food to poor people and had so much to carry in her hands that she put candles in a crown on her head so she could see where she was going. I remember the crown was heavy (I was maybe 11 or 12 at the time) and I was terrified to burn myself or my friends behind me either from the fire or the hot wax. I had a wet cloth under the crown to protect my scalp from the wax, but after the whole performance I had wax in my hair, on the sidepieces of my glasses and all over my dress. It was a nightmare to get it out of my hair afterwards. During the whole performance I had two people with buckets of water in front of me and they were ready to throw it all over me if I caught fire. Thankfully I did not.
The age of consent in sweeden is 15, so young relationships are seen quite differently than in the uk, I guess you could say given more respect.. Like when the headmistress compliments august and felice for being arm and arm and having smiles.. Its automatically implied that shes supportive and acknowledging their relationship, in whatever form it is. The actors did some intense training, with a specialist intimacy coordinator.. Which is such a new way of handling these kinds of scenes and one of the reasons its such a heartwarming ans successful programme, because they have the space to properly act the emotions and the intensity, because they're properly supported to act it safely
11:15 Actually, this whole scene is made up. Omar (Simon) kept forgetting his lines, so Edvin(Wille) made everything up. The fish's names are Omar's former bandmates names, from when he was in the band FO&O. The band was actually really big in Sweden and in the world, the members were- Omar, Oskar-Oski, Oskar-Ogge (Olle), and Felix-Felle. That's a brilliant idea made by Edvin.
I saw an interview that said the naming of the Fish was planned, but he had to name them on the spot, so it was Edvin's idea right before they filmed the scene to use Omar's band mates names. Omar didn't think they'd like the idea but decided to listen to Edvin and do it anyway, and obviously it worked! It's such a great scene.
@@Tif_art_ I'm American and I watched Young Royals not knowing who the actors were, so I didn't know or get the reference of Omar's bandmates until after I learned more about the actors, but I will say in the moment my best friend and I discussed how we thought it seemed improvised, it was so natural and didn't seem planned. Such a great moment.
I'm from Israel and I too didn't know anything about them until after I watched the show and got into them. When I found out about the details of this scene I was so thrilled and mind blown by their geniusness 😁🤯
Hi Courtney - continued great commentary this time with Nathan and Corgi. Will be interesting to get your take on the next episode. One of the things I've liked about the series is that the cast seem like real people rather than made up actors. Again, also having gone to a small boarding school for my junior and senior years (though in the U.S., not Sweden, lol) the setting brings back lots of familiar memories. There were many well-off students there (though no nobility), but I was not one of them ... I worked two jobs - dishwasher and janitor. As a result I interacted with just about everyone. I was pretty shy/reserved but always friendly including to the younger students who lots of upperclassmen tended to ignore. My roommate (a year older than I was) insisted I should run for student body president. I got the votes of all the kids who weren't part of the "in" group - including virtually all of the underclassmen - and actually won. It looked good on college applications, lol. :-)
Every reaction I have seen is like "wtf is this Lucia thing". At first it was funny, now I'm tired of it. 😅 I've gathered that it's an old Christmas tradition at schools, they choose Lucia who has a candle crown and and the rest of the girls walk behind her with candles (as you can see in the episode) . I think the origin of it is religious. It's mainly a Swedish thing, they have had Lucias for decades now.
I loved this episode. It really runs you through a roller-coaster of emotions. I love how Nathan deflects the Superman/ Clark Kent to protect his secret identity. Also Bucky for the few moments he was there was completely adorable.
9:56 Nope, Sweden is not Catholic (at least not since 1520s), the Church of Sweden is Protestant, Lutheran to be precise. Praying in schools isn´t normal in Sweden. I think this is done where to give it an air of old school conservatism. Even if a lot of people are still members in the Church, most people are agnostic atheists. People born before 1996 automatically became members of Church of Sweden, if their parents were. So most Swedes aren´t Christians. It´s a Post-Christian society I would say, we still have a lot of traditions and stuff, even if we don´t believe in the biblical myths anymore. Like a lot of Europe, I think, at least North-Western Europe. 46 % of babies in Sweden are baptized, it had decreased, in 2000 it was 73 %. But it´s mostly because it´s a tradition. 19:40 Yes, Lucia is a Swedish thing, and old important tradition It´s traditionally early on the morning of the on December 13th, which was said to be the darkest night of the year, and then Lucia and her entourage comes to bring the light again, leading up to Christmas. To be selected at the Lucia of the school is like really an honor (even if it´s really scary with the candles on your head, often you have a damp cloth underneath the crown to). Sometimes you also go to like nursing homes for the elderly and so on. For younger kids there are electric crowns (and with the younger kids all who wants usually gets to be lucia). There are traditional songs to sing, and it´s common that the kids "surprise" their parents with this on the morning, bringing special lucia buns with saffron and raisin, and gingerbread. The Nobel prize award laurates (who stay at Grand Hotel a few days after the ceremony in December 10th) also gets woken up by this. St Lucia was according to the legend a martyr from Syracuse. She had promized herself to God, and wanted to give her dowry to the poor, but her mom promised her to some man, when she refused to get married she was reported to the governor and they tried to burn her to the stake (the candles symbolizes this), and then they stabbed her (the red ribbon symbolizes that) 20:52 That´s one of the many things I like about this show. The people do mistakes, I hate it in shows when the protagonists are perfect and does everything right, and never slips up or also do some not so good things. Especially when it´s a show about teens.
Remember what Finland did at that time lol An axe and a head lol Edit: when you say something is a 'Swedish thing', I think you should think of the 'Swedish Empire'. That was centuries ago and comprised of all current Nordic countries. Lucia is very much alive in Finland, Santa is 100% German in Finland. I like the Finnish 'Santa' - i.e. the Goat - punishing little kids lol. I think the peeps in the US don't get us in the Nordics at all🤣
Very insightful I realised I'd messed up when I was editing but I could alter it after it's been filmed unfortunately I think it because I have tendency when I think of Catholicism to always think Christianity. This insightful thank you it shows how cruel and kind history is at the exact same time almost like good vs evil.
@@toms5996 "when you say something is a 'Swedish thing', I think you should think of the 'Swedish Empire'. That was centuries ago and comprised of all current Nordic countries." No, the Swedish Empire (1611-1721) didn´t compromise all the Nordic countries. Just Sweden, Finland and the Tröndelag region in Norway. And also a little bit the Baltic countries and Swedish Pomerania. Not Denmark, not most of Norway, and definitely not Iceland. Finland was a part of Sweden for almost 700 years, until 1809, so of course there are still a lot of old Swedish traditions still in Finland today.
@@Courtney-Jai "I have tendency when I think of Catholicism to always think Christianity" Don´t you mean the other way around, that when you think of Christianity, you always think Catholicism? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Lucia is a “ritual” or tradition we have in Sweden, that symbolizes that everyone should be brave and warm-hearted. St Lucia was a girl from Italy I think. She would sing to spread happiness in dark times. The candles on her head symbolizes the light, and the red “belt thingy” symbolizes her blood, I don’t know the whole story, but she got hurt in many ways, and she stabbed her eyes out at some point in her life I think. But the tradition says that one person get choose to be the Lucia, the rest are “star-boys” (direct translation) (stjärngosse) and her “tärnor ” (don’t really know what that is in English). The event happens almost two weeks before Swedish Christmas (24 dec) and we celebrate the days left, kind of. Cause we have something called “advent” and it is the day we celebrate how many days there’s left until Christmas, if that makes sense? Every “advent” happens on a Sunday. So first “advent” could be 1 dec, second would be 8 dec, third, 15 dec and second 22 dec. Each Sunday we light one candle and on Christmas Eve we light all of them once again. Lucia is traditionally on 13 dec, but sometimes we celebrate it on the nearest Sunday. One more thing the tradition says is that we could celebrate it differently, some family’s have their own lucias, which means that the chosen Lucia in the family goes up early in the morning, makes some breakfast, traditionally with “lussekatter” and clementine. Then they wake everyone up with Christmas songs. That’s why they’re wearing those white dresses, they’re nightgowns. Almost every school has a “lucia-train” (direct translation) (luciatåg), and of course every church has one. In Sweden we’re Protestant-Christians, so we aren’t really that religious, but the things and traditions we have, they are very old. “Advent” is also a kind of light, in the dark December, cause in Sweden, December is not a fun month, the sun goes up at like 8 am and goes down 3 pm, and I live in south Sweden, so we have the most sun light in the whole country in December. So we get together with family each Sunday and has a traditional “jul fika” or “advents fika”. This is only a simple explanation, I could talk about this for ages, as you see. Hope it answers your questions!
Everyone assumes that Wille wanted August's fees paid, I don''t see any evidence for that. When he called he asked for August"s finances to be investigated as a favour, he wasn't asking from them to be investigated for August, but just for his own ends. The phone call to August saying that it was due to Wilhelm is true even if that wasn't something Wilhelm intended. My read is that Wilhelm is not used to having to use any royal power or influence, and that's why he's so heavy handed at the meeting of the society, he has no practice and no subtlety. Because he has no practice needing to use the royal administration to his own ends he didn't know that his "favour" would turn into the Queen being told regardless. The Queen is the one who wanted August protected so that Wille had that "good influence" (to make him more of an arrogant stuck up royal prat).
18:00 I mean, if the club is about bragging about their parents' titles, Wilhelm should really be the leader since his parents are the most powerful haha
I believe that August planned the whole drug problem. I believe he reported Alexander and knew that everyone would defend Alexander and he would then bring up the truth about Simon so he can create a rift between Simon and Wilhelm. Thats why he was watching the video so often, the “little finger” was plotting this whole thing since he filmed them. Sadly for him things backfired because of his tuition and his loss of power. Its a pretty awesome power move on Wilhem’s part and also it is good. I don’t believe Wilhelm only did it to keep Simon around, but because he knows Alex won’t lose much and Simon will lose more if he gets expelled. Signs of a smart future king i say!
hmm but alexander was missing when august went looking for him at his window and that's when he gave up and checked wilhelm's window. i think alex really did get caught but august did use the situation to his advantage. he was just waiting for a reason to get rid of simon and that was it.
@@k8ieedits Good point. My thought is just a theory. August is a scheming bastard though. I could see him orchestrating the whole thing out to get rid of Simon. Also Alex not answering the window is just a plot twist to lead August to Wilhelm’s window. It doesn’t really matter in the end because August ends up posting the video which is just downright terrible.
That's what I thought too. August definitely took advantage of the situation. Look at the lovable devoted Alexander. Don't think that he would ever be able to pressure someone just to get himself out of the focus. And only August himself seems to be speaking to him. So August can say pretty much what ever he wants, and everyone has to believe him without a doubt. Until Wille came up with the fees
In Finland we tend to think Swedish royalty as our own dating back some 1000 years (In the past Finland was Sweden-Finland). In 2018 there was a commercial of the actual Swedish prince look-a-like Carl Philip who kissed his partner, another man. It was just an add for a media company of course and the next in line to 'rule Sweden' is of course Victoria, the crown princess (I have shook hands with her😉🇫🇮. Though Carl Philip is fiiiinee lol). The Swedish royalty seem to be quite lovely people. (In the Nordics we are Evangelist Lutheran - we get baptised, go to church etc. Church is perhaps the most important institution - but we're not crazy like our brothers in the US) Edit: I find it strange that you don't know that much about us Nordics?
He basically says he likes boy and girls but prefers not to label himself , people in my comment section said he was bisexual they typically know more then me when comes to the actors I guess I made a mistake on this one
Nathan looks like my best friend in the University. I had a huge crush on him lol And he wrote a song to me and played it to me with his guitar. I think I might be brain dead since I didn't get that he might've liked me since he had a 'girl friend'. I've watched the film midsommer but as mentioned that end with them killing a bunch of people which I'm guessing doesn't happen in the one that's actually celebrated. Isn't it to do with the days where you pretty much don't a have a night I remember when I went to Norway and it blew my mind that at 11pm it was still daylight.
@@Courtney-Jai Midsummer (or 'Juhannus' in Finland) is the summer solstice. The movie is almost comedy to me. We do party hard and in the movie there are aspects of how we party in western Finland or of course in Sweden. In the Nordics we don't have a 'night' for months on end - I.e. the sun shines 24/7. I don't like it.
@@Courtney-Jai So you are on the right track, there is no killing when we celebrate midsummer in Sweden, usually just a lot of dance around the maypole, food, swimming in the ocean, games and snaps ;) The tradition go waaaay back and a full explanation of it would be to long… but midsummer takes place in june every year, during ”summer solstice” (the longest day of the year).

I really have no idea not sure how other monarchs work I would imagine is would fall to a close relative like a cousin , like it did in England at one point.
The Swedish royal family is relatively closely related to the Norwegian and Danish families. So if the entire line of succession to the throne fell away for whatever reason, there would be enough replacements in neighboring countries. (As in British history, a Scottish queen (Mary Stewart) laid claim to the English throne of Elizabeth Tudor. If Elizabeth I. had not stopped her, she probably would have lost her English throne to a Scottish queen.) The Danes and Norwegians all come from a German line Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and this has 'offshoots' that would have led to Spain, Greece and thus even back to the deceased Prince Philip in the UK. In theory(!) nearly all of the European nobility could(!) lay claim to it, but 99,9999..% of them never would be near this. But the details are far too complex to mention here. But in short, if you want to find someone for something like that, you will find more than enough.

My mistake I actually realised this as I was editing that it was protestant but it's an interesting insight into another country
We do Lucia celebrations in Norway too, for the same reasons, tradition.
@EDITS yeah ik, jul ≠ Christmas but what I mean is that Lucia is seen as a part of the Christmas holiday celebration not that Christmas is a reserved Christian holiday if you get what I mean
Isn't it funny that peoples outside the Nordics don't know that we are 100% Lutheran Christian?
First Nathan is super cute. The first half of this was the most perfect boyfriend material and then it just breaks your heart. Can't wait to see Ep. 6 react! Great job guys! 🤗
I agree. The guys are both fine... lol
Thats makes alot of sense haha I found from my own personal experience hair is pretty flammable I guess no hair spray on Lucia day haha
"They don't look like supermodels"
Omar is a literal supermodel lol
23:29 YOU TELL HIM!!
yes he does sing like an angel 🤍😇
Totally agree, his voice is so beautiful!
If I'm *not* wrong
yep, you’re right! this is pretty much exactly what he said in a swedish queer magazine interview back in 2019. love the fact that an actual queer actor got this role. ♥️
that's pretty much what bisexuality is tho... like, i respect that there's (younger) people may not feel comfortable with their orientation just yet but the lengths at which some go to avoid using the Big Bad B word at all costs is super frustrating at times because we, who are okay and comfy calling ourselves it, still got bad rap and the avoidance just plays into it imo

Yay, a comment about Lucia-crown-security!
yikes!!! lol
11:15
Actually, this whole scene is made up.
Yeah exactly

Thats pretty impressive man shows what have friendly demeanor and a good personality can do for you .
Every reaction I have seen is like "wtf is this Lucia thing". At first it was funny, now I'm tired of it. 😅
I've gathered that it's an old Christmas tradition at schools, they choose Lucia who has a candle crown and and the rest of the girls walk behind her with candles (as you can see in the episode) . I think the origin of it is religious. It's mainly a Swedish thing, they have had Lucias for decades now.
just wanted to say that It's a thing in all the scandinavian countries:)
@@liii3622 I live in Finland and it's not very common here. They might do it in some Swedish speaking schools, but that's pretty much it.

She had promized herself to God, and wanted to give her dowry to the poor, but her mom promised her to some man, when she refused to get married she was reported to the governor and they tried to burn her to the stake (the candles symbolizes this), and then they stabbed her (the red ribbon symbolizes that)
20:52 That´s one of the many things I like about this show.
That was centuries ago and comprised of all current Nordic countries."
No, the Swedish Empire (1611-1721) didn´t compromise all the Nordic countries.
@@Courtney-Jai "I have tendency when I think of Catholicism to always think Christianity"
Don´t you mean the other way around, that when you think of Christianity, you always think Catholicism? Or am I misunderstanding something?
@@Asa...S could be I generally group everything with Christianity together which isn't correct but I guess your right I went to Catholic school which didn't go down to well with me and made me an atheist ironically
Y’all so cute I can’t
Awww thank you thats so sweet
Why did I not get a notification 🤔 I would have come here much earlier 🙂

You make a very good point you could be actually right
omar is actually unlabelled, but he has said that he is open to dating “girls, guys or whoever” :)
18:00 I mean, if the club is about bragging about their parents' titles, Wilhelm should really be the leader since his parents are the most powerful haha
Very true I feel like wilhelm is quite a reserved person when comes to those sort of things , like just wants to live a normal life.
To be fair as you can tell from my reaction I kinda thought something similar, the situation does seem very manufactured by August.
@@Courtney-Jai 💯

Midsommer, Lucia etc. are important things for us. As is our version of Christmas and New Year. To explain them would take too much space..

To Swedes: What happens if the only successor to the throne abdicates? In comparison to the UK where the royal line of succession is nearly endless
If Elizabeth I. had not stopped her, she probably would have lost her English throne to a Scottish queen.)
The Danes and Norwegians all come from a German line Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and this has 'offshoots' that would have led to Spain, Greece and thus even back to the deceased Prince Philip in the UK. In theory(!) nearly all of the European nobility could(!) lay claim to it, but 99,9999..% of them never would be near this.
But the details are far too complex to mention here.
But in short, if you want to find someone for something like that, you will find more than enough.
