  • WHAT A MACHINE!!!!!! AV216 is by far the best B7TL in the entire Dublin Bus fleet, she's got kickdown! She's one of two buses with kickdown, the other bus being AV241 so i've heard. The poor girl got stuck in 4th gear on the N3 (Navan Road) which for those who don't know Dublin, is a dual carriageway. She got stuck in 4th because she was in kickdown which is shifting through the gears at full revs, and to shift into 5th gear at max revs AV216 needed to be at around 50mph but the speed limiter on all Dublin buses is set to 45mph so 5th gear wasn't possible, which is a shame really, the speed limiter is what ruins the buses here, but they're still f*cking amazing! 5th gear was reachable when not in kickdown of course because the gearbox doesnt shift through gears at maxs revs when not in kickdown, all the driver had to do to get AV216 into 5th on the Navan Road was to let off the accelerator, which would disengage kickdown (obviously), then apply about 50% throttle which would allow the Ecomat gearbox to smoothly shift itself into its 5th gear. I also felt like displaying "kickdown" when the speed limiter was hit would be silly so that's why nothing was displayed if you're ever wondering.
Also, from this video foward, there are new features for you as the viewer to enjoy, we now have a BRAND NEW LIVE KICKDOWN feature which I think fits the videos perfectly! So the viewer can now know for sure when the driver slams his foot to the floor as it happens, it just ads to the effect of speed! We also have a new and improved, full torque converter status throughout all the gears now, thanks to the innovative idea from BusThrash, please do check out his channel, his content is untouchable! He's the one who came up with the idea of the "mechanical drive" notification that pops up momentarily when a ZF Ecomat gearbox reaches third gear, which is where the torque converter stays locked. What this feature does, is it enables the viewer to understand the Ecomat gearbox better, this notification tells you that, from third gear upwards, the torque converter stays locked, whereas before-hand you werent told anything, which was confusing for some people. Below is a key to help you understand the live gearbox, torque converter and kickdown status features in my videos:
X gear locked - The bus is in X gear with the torque converter locked.
X gear unlocked - The bus is in X gear with the torque converter unlocked or "slipped" as some people say.
Mechanical drive - The bus's torque converter stays locked from this moment in time until "X gear unlocked" is shown again, which will happen especially when the bus is coming to a stop and is slowing down through the gears. PLEASE NOTE: The "Mechanical drive" notification will be used on other gearboxes at a later date as i've yet to decide if it will fit in with the other gearboxes or not.
•KICKDOWN• - The bus's kickdown has been activated.
I hope you enjoy the new features and please do feel free to leave a comment with feedback, its always much appreciated!

Excellent footage man, you can't beat the sound of an AV in full whack, just a pity some of these great buses are being withdrawn.

I agree mate, luckily we have the small private companies that buy old Dublin Bus stock and keep them living for years and years!

That's one thing I HATE about Dublin Bus, is that they limit all their buses to 45mph, fucking sucks :-(
