They are very well known. They are Tamilians, but based out of Mumbai. So, they are trained in Carnatic and Hindustani as well. Plus what they sang here is a Marathi abhang (devotional song), not falling in to the musical ethos of either forms. The song describes how Sant (saint) Tukaram surrendered to Vitthal (Avatar of Vishnu) and went to Pandharpur (where Vitthal temple is situated). This is such a beautiful piece because it has been performed by Carnatic singers with traditional Carnatic accompaniments (mridangam, ghatam and violin), but has stayed true to the roots of abhang. It always transports me when I listen to this rendition. They are absolutely amazing. Whenever they perform people expect them to perform this song, especially if they are performing in Maharashtra. They are known for this abhang.
Rick is right, she was keeping measure. In Carnatic music it is called taalam or as Ustad Zakir Hussain says taal. It's the measure of the beat.
Side note: they are sisters and always wear contrasting sarees, as in one sister will wear a saree that matches the blouse of the other sister and vice versa. This observation is courtesy my wife who is a Maharashtrian (I'm a Tamilian). Another reason why I love this rendition, because it is a mixture of the culture I knew and grew up with and the culture that I married in to.

It's a devotional song. So when a marathi person who understand these lyrics listens to this song, it is a devine experience for him. And we can observe the expression on his face that he is completely engrossed in the performance... To my surprise... Rick has the same expressions on his face while listening to this. Classical Musicians keeps track of the beats (Taal, Taala) using slapping with their right hand. traditionally when you are sitting down, you clap on your thighs but sometimes it is done on the left hand or just in the air. There are different Thaals set and each composition is sung to a fixed thaala. There are a total of 35 taalas in Carnatic music.
Eg. Most common Thaala is Adi Thaala, which is a 8 beat cycle. It is counted as follows.
Slap, Little Finger, Ring Finger, Middle Finger, Slap, Flip,Slap, Flip
Slap is you slap with inside of your palm, Flip is with the back of your palm, Fingers you tap with the finger.

    • @media-rn6zc

This is true for carnatic classical only. Hindustani classical has much more freedom in the form of vilambit taal. Your slapping of hands fails here

Rick and Korbin.... Carnatic music is based on Raagaas and Taalas. Raagaas are musical foundation or base on which the lyrics or compositions are set. Raagaas are formed by using at least two or more of the seven swaras namely 'Sa' (called SHADJAM), 'Ri' (called RISHABHAM), 'Ga' (called GANDHARAM), 'Ma' (called MADHYAMAM), 'Pa' (called PANCHAMAM), 'Dha' (called DAIWATHAM) and 'Ni' (called NISHADHAM). Depending upon the raga that forms the basis for a composition, the same is set to a certain beat meter called 'Thaalam'. Some of these beats are simple and some are complex. The musician uses the Thaalam through their fingers by generally tapping the same on their thighs when seated to guide themselves and the accompanying artists in the rendition of the composition. Sometimes the artists may also use just their fingers to keep track of the Thaalam, just like they were when rendering this composition.

Firstly Here’s a quote from my guru(my teacher):
    Never claim the title “Singer”
No matter how good you think you’re,
There’s always someone better than you and vice-versa
Imagining your voice as a wire made of sound helps, when most Indian singers sings
it actually gives the singer a kind of live picture or portrait where they can control what’s happening in that picture by pushing-pulling that sound wire in more than one direction, since it’s in singers mind (whatever going on in that picture)nobody knows in which dimension singer is singing, which is actually the beauty of it and that’s why audience get to see something that they can never comprehend by themselves, cuz it’s beauty is beyond general people’s imagination or access.
I love singing too, but I’m not a singer, I sing every day on Smule and I’ll be honest to tell you that when I sings on Smule, people who listen to my songs or collab with my song thinks I’m trying to entertain someone else other than me, actually it’s quite the opposite of what 99.99% people thinks.

Okay finally thank you for reacting on this. The beauty of this abhang that’s what it’s called is it’s a ninda stuti which means you praise someone in a ridiculous manner and here the poet is ridiculing lord Vishu by calling him a ghost who enchants every one that was that beauty of Indian culture they called their God bhoot which means a ghost and no one take an offence until now 😂😂

This is an Abhang (marathi devotional song), sung generally in praise of Vitthal (Avatar of Lord Vishnu said to be residing in Pandharpur, a town of Maharashtra). This abhang talks about the greatness of the place and how because Saint Tukaram (Tuka) went to Pandhari (Pandharpur), and here went does not mean just physically but spiritually too, i.e. he became a devotee of Vitthal and because of that he achieved Moksh (released from the cycle of rebirths).

There are 12 grooves if you look at all the fingers except for the thumb. So using fingers you can keep count without counting

They are a great musicians. The songs they sing are very heart wrenching. I want you to react to an actual abhang by Aruna sairam. Abhangs are always beautiful. you don't have to understand the meaning to enjoy an abhang. The thing they do with the fingers are called "Thaala" whichis is usually done in Carnatic music to keep track of rhythms. In Carnatic music and Bharathnatyam dance all that is sang and danced to are always done as per calculation of this "Thaala". If you go deep into the subject it can go on and on.
