    I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

    I bet she likes pressure because she’s still a baby kitty, and it’s similar to swaddling with a newborn baby. When baby humans or any animal are in the belly, it’s really tight in there so there’s constant counter-pressure. So it’s associated with security of the womb. So if you wanna let her know that you’re her new mama, then cuddle her tight! Honestly, a lot of things that soothe new babies might help you bond with her!

    Advice for the new cat mom:
    Definitely recommend a cat tree for sleeping and scratching. Make sure to train her not to scratch the furniture. I would also recommend a Luup litter box, they are so handy and easy to clean. Lots of lint rollers! When she is older, maybe get a thing to grow cat safe grass. They like munching on grass to help with their digestion. Be careful with how much cat nip you give her, as too much can make them sick. Be prepared for anything to becoMe a bed for a couple months, and then never again!

      it’s actually possible for a male cat to be a torti or calico it’s just INCREDIBLY rare. Like 1 in a million rare. But still possible. And Leo definitely has a tortoise shell coat pattern! ☺️ her breed is most likely just “domestic long haired” Bcus there’s so many cat breeds in general and mostly strays reproducing, most cats are just given a general breed with their coat length. Kind of like dogs that are just called “mutts” cause they’re so many different breeds combined. The only way to know is to do a DNA test, which are so hard to find for cats. Lmao just some more random cat info for ya 😂😉

    Please be sure to play with leo's paws a lot to get her used to it so you will be able to trim her claws without her being upset. Don't declaw her, it's horrible and cruel, they live in pain for the rest of their lives (just in case your were considering that). Do bring her on car rides often and introduce her to new people so she can be properly socialised and not scared to go in the car when she has to (like to go to the vet).

    • @nicolegrima5433
      @nicolegrima5433 4 года назад +34

      declawing is cruel, the equivalent of lopping a finger off at the first knuckle. scratching is natural and how cats scent mark their home to feel safe. invest in a good scratching post, put it in a central location and apply catnip to it once a week. I recommend the ultimate scratching post, nice and tall so they can get a proper stretch, very high quality - lasts for years - and looks nice too!
      Molly should be fine because cats don't get the same satisfaction scratching a velvet couch to a loose woven texture.

      Brushing is another good thing to get them used to when they're little, and a super lovely way to bond :) Highly recommend Furminator brushes, again a bit pricey but cats actually like it and it will last a lifetime.

    Hey Molly I have a cat of my own, here are some tips: get her used to the backpack, the more she gets accostomed to it the better, cats usually don't like to be stuck in things where they don't see around them, she is probably more calm cause she's still shy they have an adapting period so she'll probably loosen up a bit, cats love to be cuddled so when you hugged her she liked it and when you teleased her you changed her environment when she was sleeping so she panicked it's normal haha, also the first few days let her roam the appartment so she gets used to it and her new environment. Don't let her stay to long in the play pen. She's a gorgeous kitty 💙💙

    When playing with her use toys not your hands.

    • @theductductgoose
      @theductductgoose 4 года назад +179

      to give some context on why this is important: kitten teeth and claws don't do as much damage as adult teeth and claws, so when she grows up, and suddenly it's not ok to play with your hands anymore, she won't understand why. She will also think that hands are always playthings, and won't think of them as being attached to you, her human.

    • @kaitlinbrix
      @kaitlinbrix 4 года назад +8

      Also cats are capable of learning restraint. I have 5 and they are conscious of how rough they can play with each other. The same cat will play differently depending on which cat they are playing with as some seem to prefer playing rough and crazy. Others either don't care for ANY rough play or only some times play rough. And the cat that plays the most rough, is the most gentle when playing with my hand.
      Also keep in mind that with Molly being blind, it might be a better bonding experience for the two of them. I'm sure Molly is aware that kittens have claws and teeth.
      In conclusion, I don't think it should be a concrete rule to "not play with cats with your hands"

      Or poop all over the place. My wee Buzz is an anxious wee soul. So whenever he'd get anxious or get scared he would have an accident. He had a rough start to our home. Our other cat Nala isn't afraid of anything so she was taunting the husky that lived next door. Buzz wanted to do the same, he wasn't quick enough and nearly passed away from the injury the husky gave him. It was a christmas miracle that he survived. This was 4 years ago. He's still very jumpy and anxious but I love him no matter what. This morning he was rolling around my mum's flowerbed and then came up to have our annual morning cuddles. When I turned the lights on I noticed my bed was covered in mud Hahaha I changed it today but its probably going to be muddy tomorrow again lol

    I want to recommend this cat feeder that we use for our cat. It is tiered, you put food in the top and there are holes for the cat paw it down to a tray like thing at the bottom. It helps with their natural instinct to forage and I think it could really help your blind kitty get used to using it's other senses to get food. It is called "Catit Senses 2.0 Food Tree Cat Feeder". My family got ours from amazon and it was really fun watching our cat, Sasha, figure it out.

    Tips for kittens (I got my first kitten on June 14 2017)
    -start with feeding half a can of wet food
    -if you pick them up by the extra skin on the back of their neck they will calm down since that is the way there mom would hold them
    -they remember things more from the beginning of their life so make sure you build the bond now and that is why they will always have an attachment to Joey
    -they will purr if they are happy
    Those are just some things I have learned

    She is so adorable, congrats on becoming a cat mom! The only advice I have for you is be prepared for her to climb everywhere when she gets bigger, my baby likes to jump on window sills and look out the window, so maybe cat towers or cat hammocks could be a good idea for you! Also, it could be a good idea to get her a collar with a bell so that you can hear where she is when she walks around :)

      I have one kitty who Jackson Galaxy would describe as being a ground dweller. He likes his four paws on terra firma, thank you very much, and has no interest in the tall cat tree. I had a cat who would find the highest point in my house whenever possible. My other little gentleman is comfortable anywhere - he owns everything everywhere, but his favourite place to be is curled up on my lap. He's a big boy, so that's no mean feat.

    The “weighted blanket effect” (pressure therapy) for anxiety does make animals (as well as people) calm down, it’s not necessarily a cat thing as much as it’s just a thing in general for animals & people especially so when experiencing something new/something the animal hasn’t experienced a lot. It’s the same as an emotional support dog doing pressure therapy for people with anxiety expect in this case it’s a human doing pressure therapy for an animal instead.

    Some things to have for cats
    (not necessities):
    - scratch-post with a place to scratch and sit and look out the window
    - bed or place to hide or sleep
    - treats
    - toys that she cane use alone
    - toys that you can use to play with her
    -- a collar (if you want. Some cats don't mind them, some rip them off)
    - a brush (soft bristled would be best for her) soft bristled for thin haired cats, wire brush for thick haired cats
    - depending if the kitten sheds a lot, a lint roller can be handy.
    - travel carrier
    Info: Its good to make sure that you don't stress Lavender out, or sometimes she could start stress peeing.
    - NEVER EVER LET HER SWALLOW STRING.
    Please note these are not necessities! I myself find these things helpful but not everyone does.

    When she gets bigger, if you ever need a harness, get the metpet softsided walking jacket! I roadtripped across the U.S with both my cats and it's definitely the safest harness out there. The Modkat flip top litter box is really good, along with the LitterGenie or PetFusion for litter disposal. I got nice cat beds from amazon called "bedsure round cat bed" the cushion is reversible and the bed is washable. My go to cat collars are CritterGear breakaway cat collars, they come in so many unique patterns and they're super cute! Try all kinds of toys, different cats love different types, my oldest loves small plushies she can carry around, my younger cat loves foil scrunch ball toys, my mother in law's cat loves the plastic ball toys with jingle bells inside, they've all loved the fishing pole type of toys with strings and a soft toy at the end. Definitely try cardboard scratchers, along with a scratching pole, + cat tree. Try food that has meat as the first ingredient(cats are carnivores so it's healthier for them) foods with too many grains can upset their tummies. I switched my cats from cheap food to Hill's Science Diet, but there's a lot of other great brands out there, just gotta research to see what works well for her. I hope you enjoy your new fur baby, she's so sweet!

Cats love control so when they feel out of control it's good to squeeze them a little especially when about to pick them up so they know they're controlled and not about to fall! So yes, the weighted blanket thing is true. Cats love to feel secure! Your kitten definitely trusts you.

    *Looks over at my cat Harley, who usually terrorizes the other cats, chilling in her box next to my desk* heh. What’s having a chill cat like?? (Jk. I’ve got a chill cat too. She is loud tho. And reeeeeally doesn’t like Harley. Because of the whole terrorizing the other cats thing, the 2 oldest cats do not like Harley. The other younger cats (Harley is the youngest, so there are 2 that are younger than the oldest 2, but older than Harley. I hope that makes sense.) are sometimes willing to play with her. But it usually ends with them getting beat up.
    No wonder Harley had a very visible joker smile type marking when she was a kitten. (For some reason you cant see it anymore, but that joker smile is exactly why we named her Harley. Cause we didn’t want to name her joker.)

Have the litter box a GOOD distance away from the food/water for kitty's sake of staying clean, cat proof the house, make sure she has HER OWN SAFE ROOM, to go to, SLOWLY introduce dog to cat and if there's any signs of stress from cat aka arched back, hissing, fluffed up tail PLEASE listen, stop interaction and let cat breath. Love you.

    Kittens love being held up close to your heart or pulse. It's calming for them, as it reminds them of their mum.
    You definitely need a cat tree/scratching post (a couple, actually).
    Make sure her litter box is somewhere easy/close by to find, for the first wee while. You can move it to its real home afterwards.
    Maybe keep that box for now, as she might like to retreat into it when she's new and getting adjusted to her new surroundings. Just turn it on its side, and pop a blanket in there for her.
    I've been a cat mum for decades, so i know every trick in the book! Lol. (I've rescued abused and abandoned cats, which take a ton of TLC and extra attention).

    The feeling secured being squished is oftentimes related to having siblings and how they nurse and sleep in a pile. The weight reminds them of sleeping with mom and siblings. Also when a baby kitten has a sense that's underdeveloped they seem to appreciate the reassurance that comes from stimulating another sense. Deaf kitties often like bright areas, even if they have perfect vision. Almost like it provides assurance.
    Also in humans, pressure over large parts of the body causes the release of a chemical that calms you do. (Think of a hug in a stressful or depressing situation feeling calming. It's a chemical release) Could work similarly in felines.
