Her version of this song sounds like a well experienced lady or a mother who has been through a bad heartbreak experience. Billie's version is the same but the feels is different. What I'm referring to here is how both of them make the song sound distinct to their own styles. Kelly added power vocals and some of her own touch to make it sound like a big song. While Billie, she is well-known for singing mellow, and just quiet whispery vocals. But still, it sounds amazing to me.

Both Billie and Kelly's versions were equally amazing for me. When I listened to Billie's, as it was her song, it gave me that sober feeling, that loneliness a person can go through a heartbreak. Kelly also shows that feeling in her version, but with an additional anger and disappointment. Both artists just slayed this song.
Exactly! They are both talented. This is Billie's song but Kelly really made this version her own. Billie is more vulnerable and conveys sadness. Kelly is pissed and heartbroken at the same time. Her divorce has been hell for her and she brings that to the song. I love them both.

I'm 31 now, and Billie's is amazing and gives me nostalgia. It reminds me of some of the fleeting toxic relationships I had as a teenager.
Kelly's version though is like ending an abusive longterm relationship, where there's actual stakes involved. It speaks more of trauma.
Although Billie wrote it Kelly's hits way deeper.
That's a deluded feeling. The only reason it "feels" different to you, despite the obvious and mostly pointless changes Kelly made to singing certain aspects of this song, is that you KNOW Kelly Clarkson is older and recently went through a divorce. That's it. Knowing those things, paired with what we publicly know about Billie, has simply influenced the way you are personally perceiving this song.

Billies version is more flowy and sounds like she’s learning an early life lesson/making a realization now. Kelly’s version has a anger and frustration to it that displays more stakes just like the original poster said. They’re both beautiful but it’s art and up for interpretation, not recognizing that is doing both a disservice.

@forrest3867 I actually didn't know Kelly got a divorce and this comment is how I found out. Either way this version of the song still just sounded like the end of a long term relationship and billie's sounded like the end of a short term. Both versions are fantastic but they give me wayyyy different feelings. Billy's is whimsical with that vulnerability that just comes with the shock of a first heartbreak. Kelly's is passionate and angry and just feels like years worth of built up resentment.

It is a testament to Kelly's career that at 40 years old and 20 years in, she can take a hit song from today's most popular artist and apply her skill and power and create a new epic. This is greatness.

I was so bummed when I couldn’t hear the swear words when she did this on the show because you know, had to be censored. This more than makes up for it lol. Plus, nothing against Billie’s version (she’s awesome in her own way) but it didn’t feel emotional enough I guess for me? I don’t know, but I absolutely love this version. Kelly is the master of exuding emotion in song. It feels like this is her own song her emotions come out so breathtakingly. I never wanted Kelly to get divorced just to get material like this, because I wanted her to be happy on that department. Since it is what it is, I’m going to enjoy the product.

This is a good version. Kelly makes clear just how difficult this is to sing, technically. At her concerts Billie makes compromises. Cuts back. And nobody is going to complain about it.
This cover is really good, but this is not better than the original. This sounds like some 40-50 year old women having a life crisis because she found out her husband is cheating, left her , and the kids, while having issues with the HOA. She makes the song sound so old. I miss when KC had the lighter tone.

I love both versions of this song so much. Billie’s sounds like having the illusion shattered the first time, a ‘fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me’ vibe. Kelly’s has a deep, undercurrent of rage and utter disappointment at how much hurt and betrayal someone can inflict on someone they claim to love/loved. I live and breath for both these icons.

Before I got to it I also thought this would be the case and then was so disappointed when it hit. Listen to Billie's more recent performances of this song e.g. at the Grammys - more rock and anger than this version of Kelly's. Kelly kept it too soft and pretty for me until around 3:50

There’s a fair amount of singers who can sing like this in this generation. Ariana grande and demi lovato are two that come to mind that are fairly established vocalists for this generation. Tori Kelly too but she isn’t as known in that regard or as famous as the two besides from that singing movie that came out.

This is a whole entire new song to me. Like yeah, technically it's Billie's song but just because of how she sang it, it feels like a whole new song. It feels more mature and more raw. It's so devastating that Kelly divorced. As her parents' divorce had made her suffer so much as a kid, I kinda always hoped that her marriage would be happy. I will never forget the pain in her voice and how she was crying while singing "Piece by piece". And now when I'm listening to this cover, it actually breaks my heart.
