Also me: Has zero intention of annotating my books.
I really admire people who can annotate and enjoy it but like you said it just makes it feel like school/homework for me. I must admit I do really like your system though, there's nothing too rigid about it and you've made it work for you without being too complicated. If I ever did take up annotating I would probably do something like this so I appreciate the tips! ❤️

i love annotating books for fun. i don't do it in an academic way, i just love writing any of my thoughts about the book in the margins. this may vary from "oh my god i love this chapter" to "holy shit why am i crying" to "i love this character". i also love lending books to my friends and i always encourage them to annotate them as well. it's so much fun to look back at these and see how my friends started having conversations in the margins!

Personally, annotating has never been homework. I always underline shit that sticks out to me (mostly emotional) and it honestly makes the reading experience way better. I just did it because I lovelovelove going back to quotes and reading them and it makes me so happy. Usually, if I dont underline a lot I didnt like the book.
I dont even have to think about it cause you cant really donate books in my country (unless second hand asks for it) so it's like whatever lol. People always think I was super weird for doing it and ruined them but I feel like more people are annotating and I'm seeing more videos about it? It's nice

About the annotations swap... I had the idea to do that with some friends of mine, each buys a book and reads/annotates in a color coordination then mails it to the next person then it keeps rotating til its back to you again and then you'd have a book with all your and your friends annotations, that would be fun then if each person did the same each friend would windup with an annotated book by their friends. As you said, that is very personal, so for me it would have to be on a fun book one that i wouldnt care if I got back or not, and also would have to be among friends. I think ppl probably asked you for the very reason that its so fascinating to hear someone elses inner thought processes on reading!!

I hear a lot of people take the stance against annotating for pleasure and I totally get where they’re coming from, but for me it adds to the experience and I can’t imagine not annotating a book for pleasure at this point. Might also simply be because I’m dyslexic, so annotating keeps me engaged, helps me understand and recall better what I’ve read. This video was brilliant! Very helpful. Taking a novella class for an elective and I have to write a two to four page annotation. Not something I've ever done before. So thanks

I hope this might help someone who does sciences:
I did a masters degree in biology so reading biology, chemistry, physics and math textbooks for school. I do miss my literature teachers from high school and reading for that. But for sciences you need to focus more on facts and on physical concepts of things relating to each other. What I do in my lecture notes or textbooks: I highlight everything I find interesting or hard to understand or relevant in yellow- so it might be just half a sentence or few paragraphs in a row, it really varies. And I go through chapter or 2 with just this one colour. And then I come back after reading to the end and look through all the highlighted parts and by then I find that many of them by now I understand or remember and they are not so relevant any more. And then I highlight only the hard / especially relevant parts and now I do it in either orange or green. This is also when I might add some notes on this to the margin as an explanation or link to some other concept or perhaps a good example I have come up with which I might use in an exam (professors really like other examples, not the ones given in textbooks/during lecture). Colours are selected so that the second round is more vivid and so that the first colour does not ruin the highlighter tip of the second colour when I go over it (orange and green both are mixes of yellow). This is then great that when need to revise for exam- if I have time I reread all (almost never happens), if I have less time I read just all highlighted parts, and if I left it 'til the last moment I just go over the second round colour parts and hope for the best :)

I use a lot of flags on my books, usually to mark a specific part or phrase that made me happy or curious, or something that i would like to remember... i love it.

I love this way of annotating that’s simple because I read so much for school that it’s actually hard to keep track (especially this year where my professors have been addressing a lot of the same themes and ideas so I need to keep track of specifics since I can’t always remember the class it’s for 😭)
But also I do annotate for fun, just not heavy annotation, like if I’m reading a fun fantasy that I picked up in my own time, I’ll probably just read it, add a flag for parts that I liked or want to reference in my own writing, and then if I actually have a strong thought I might write a comment in the margins like that usually takes the form of a joke or reference to something else. But I’m also trying to use the library more for non-class books so that’ll probably change

academically, i highlight quotes in books and make written annotations in printed articles/texts. im not too fond of writing thoughts/questions in books bc i dont want to be reminded of it if i reread. in books i read for pleasure, i don't normally search for quotes but i like to keep a pencil with me just in case something really sticks out (this hardly happens since i read very fluffy contemporary). i like to think that if someone were to borrow one of my books they would treat it as their own and if they found one of my underlines it would be like they found some treasure i buried. (ik no one asked but i wanted to share) x

when I annotate I keep one specific colour (it’s purple as of now) to highlight bits of the writing that I like and could take inspiration from then use similar phrases etc. into my own writing. It really helps my mind flow when I write.

I really respect how you annotate, because my annotations are a literal shitshow. One time, I highlighted the word "quagmire", I don't know why, I just like how the word sounded. Or I will sometimes write in the margins commenting on the characters. But, if someone ever found my books with annotations, I think they would be so concerned for my mental well being. Anyways, sending my love! :)

I don’t always annotate. It just starts to happen organically with some books. In my favorite books I have writing all through them. I also have multiple copies of my favorite books though. I need a solid system though. I kinda just do whatever and I wish I were more consistent. I love the tabs and two highlighter method. I’m gonna try that out!

Using this to help me annotate my A level code. I'm only in year 10, but I love that my computer science teacher believes in me and pushes me to my maximum potential. A lot of people think that it's typically men in this field but my computer science teacher does not have that bias, and has said on various different occasions that I am top of the class. I do rather hate annotating my code, it is ever so tiresome!

The only thing I do for annotating for fun is add little tabs to quotes and moments that I enjoyed! And when reading anything from Stephen King I like to add a flag whenever I see a reference or easter egg of his other books, since he does that a lot.
Like I've finished reading The Outsider and it has a really sutil reference to Misery, which was awesome, so I added a little flag! :)

Personally, I LOVE annotating my books. The more into a book I am, the more I'll annotate, but I usually at the very least highlight favorite quotes, and I almost always write in the margins. It's not always big scholarly notes or anything, sometimes I just write "Asshole" next to a paragraph where a character does something awful, or draw a laughing face when I think something's funny, or a heart, but there's always something going on. I find that when I don't do that, I don't have as much fun with the book, and also don't always retain what I'm reading.

Nobody asked but here are my own systems
    Post it flags:
No color coding, flags at the sides point out a specific paragraph, flags in the upper side point out a whole page or pages (I usually also highlight the page numbers so I know where does the important situation end)
    Highlighters and pens:
I use gel highlighters for my books and no color coding. I highlight important lines or cute quotes, anything that seems meaningful. I used to use pens to point out paragraphs too big to be highlighted but not as important to stick a flag.
    Regular post its:
I use them to write questions, theories and opinions relating the plot or a character. Just so I can have proof that I guessed some plot twist and feel like I'm smart for doing it or feel stupid for how wrong my theory was.
    Notebook:
I use this method for somewhat complex book series or books that I know I wont finish beacuse of school.
I make a list of characters and a brief summary of who they are so when I go to the next book the next year I'll remember who the characters are. If a character dies I highlight it.
If there's a magic system with spells or a weird fake language I write them down too.
If there are definitions of things (example muggle) I write it down too and I also write the names of things that remain a mystery.
I only use the notebook method for Brandon Sanderson's books and a few other book series with lots of characters or series that I know will take some time to finish.

What a system you have there! This is not a critique, of course, but the changing colors for different books can be problematic with time, but if it works for you, enjoy! I can see it working if one adds a little note the first time one uses each color saying what they mean for that book. When I can, I use color functionally. One color, for instance, deals with intertextuality (references to other books), another with contextual/historical references, etc. Now, I know that sounds like work but it can be fun: sometimes it feels like finding little treasures within the pages.
Each one is different and this shows it quite clearly: while Kat is pure chaos, you are more organized and so on. Really interesting video!
