That was a practice swing (for the upcoming pitch) as hitters usually do when at the plate. It was a soft swing, maybe a couple seconds earlier than it should have been.
Yep our HS coach made us do this. Region play, the HS we was playing at didn’t have lights. The coach of the other team was changing pitchers every batter. We was winning by 12. Game wouldn’t be a complete game until they got the at bat in the bottom of the inning. Had about 25 mins of daylight left to play. They was trying to get the game called for darkness, which would’ve started the game over from the start because it wouldn’t have been a complete inning. The #1 pitcher had pitch 2 days earlier. Later played D1 ball has a pitcher. Our coach told us if we didn’t swing at everything would would have 1000 swings on big Betty. A 200 pound bag. So we did what we was told. Then the opposing coach told his players not to swing. Our pitcher that got drafted by the expos threw 9 strikes in a row for us to win
There is no world where you have a 12 point lead and they make you start the game over from the beginning because it got dark. You would’ve either played through the “darkness” or been given a mercy ruling
For the many commenters who clearly have never played or coached serious baseball. I've seen this before - likely the batter thought the coach signalled a hit & run or a steal where the batter is supposed to protect the runner by swinging to distract the catcher. Batter saw the bad pitch, didn't swing, then remembered he was supposed to swing. Either the runner missed the sign, or the batter got it wrong.

Yeah the kid didnt swing until after the ball was in the catchers mitt. It was like a practice swing for the next pitch not awinging at that pitch . But then again who the hell knows 😂😂😂
He was in the box and the pitcher didnt have the ball yet so yes its a strike. Basic rule. Ump should have called it, but he was probably trying to not laugh when he asked 1st base.
They call this all the time in my kids 9 year old travel league. Even when they just release the bat from their hands and it “swings” straight down by their shoes. They’re just getting ready for the next pitch but it happens too soon. It’s fkn lame. Seen it at least 3 times. Twice on my kid.
The batter was just testing his limits. You can swing the bat all you want and not get a strike as long as it’s not an attempt to actually hit the ball. The plate umpire knew this, and I’m guessing the other one didn’t
We don’t know the situation here, but it appears to me that the batter intentionally takes a strike to keep his plate appearance alive. The rules don’t really allow for it. (1) this isn’t a bona fide attempt to strike the ball and (2) the pitch is over when it’s in the catcher’s mitt. So, the batter is too late to take a strike. With that said, and if o knew that the j tent were definitely to intentionally strike to keep the PA alive, I’d probably honor the player’s desire and call it a strike.
If I was the umpire, I would tell the batter "Either you swung very late for a strike, or you're out for swinging to interfere with a potential throw on the baserunner...you're choice "
Listen! If you are going to be silly that's what you get! I would have not gone to the base Ump and would have given him a warning for the travesty of the game. I bet you when the Base Ump was changing he told his partner, "I knew he didn't swing. I bet you he will think twice in the future," 😂.
If he was swinging on every pitch he would have been stuck out lol. The bater is just trying to time how slow the pitcher is lol. Kot an actual swing however the umpire has the call..

Yeah, it was a swing. We all know it was a swing. The batter meant it to be a strike so as not to get walked.

@Youngguns42303 the catcher doesn't take the ball out or transfer hands until after the swing.... so going by the rules it's a swinging strike.

I'm willing to bet that a catcher of a 101mph pitch would have the ball in his mitt before your swing.

That should not be a strike because if the catcher has the ball the swing is technically a warm up swing
But If the team that was on the field did that, they'd argue that it shouldnt count 🤣
That's a great steal plan but the play is over.
