They have plenty of other options with that weight and sturdy. The bugout is meant to be the lightest and thinnest possible. It kind of ruin the idea for me but that’s just me! I’m 100% happy with the "cheap" plastic scales for what i need it for
I have watched this video at least a dozen times. I absolutely love the way this knife looks and have kind of been obsessing over it. With a lot of knives in this range, it was hard to justify but I never got it out of my head. Finally, I pulled the trigger. I bought a 20cv bugout from the custom shop with all satin hardware, the Flytanium scales and the rockscale backspacer. I’m sorry I copied your knife so closely but thank you for helping me spend silly amounts of money!
Glad you found a Bugout that works for you. We tend to have similar tastes but I really like the Bugout, even the stock one, but I upgraded mine to micarta and it is way better with micarta. In my opinion, the Bugout is the ideal knife for basketball shorts, which is the primary reason I like it and carry it. Stay bladed...even at the gym!
I remembered watching this video. And, I decided to never have buy one until it was in the “Custom Shop”. I really really like CPM M4!!! A year later got my in M4 Black Blade w/OD Green & Black Grivory scales, Blackout hardware, & Red Accents. Planning on making one in G10, too!!!
DBK batoned with the bugout, it was surprisingly strong. And they usually go pretty hard with their tests, they do everything you say not to😂 very entertaining, you pop in my head everytime I watch them beat on a folder (which isn’t too often) I agree tho, this is a great improvement, if I ever grab a bugout
100% with you on the "toy-like" feel I bought the CF elite version of it, I really TRIED to like it, but I ended up getting some black G-10 scales via flytanium and a full length black back spacer to keep the axis lock a little more protected from dust and stuff, other than all THAT I really do love this knife now and it feels a bit more like how it should have been made, blade could stand to be a little bit thicker as well but thats just me knit picking, good vid man I dig the full metal look of your bugout build.
Love the knife but in 2020 the easiest way to make this knife is to go on the custom configurator and buy it from benchmade with all the parts already in satin silver and save having to buy over priced custom parts and if your like me even upgrade the blade steel to 20cv. Then all you have to do is buy some flytanium titanium scales and you have a better monochrome knife for a similar price.
Agree completely, after swapping out the FRN for Ti scales, it makes it feel like a completely different knife. I went with RSD scales, a Ti spacer (no grooves so the finish doesn't rub off), and I got thumb studs to match the spacer. It's one of my most carried knives now and it still only weights about 3 ounces!
I love this build. Exactly how I want mine. Pricey yes, but it looks so good. I like Zachsstuff as well, but this is the best looking one that I have seen and is right up my alley. Thanks Metal \m/
It’s not a need. It’s the desire to have something that’s made your own. Like at hinderer xm18s for example. You spend $425-500 made, out a $200+ ti scale in it, $300 steel flame packer clip, $50-100 filler tab, anodized hardware and custom lbs. A $425 knife has more than doubled in price to have something one off. Do the function perfectly without these kids? Yes. But then it looks like any other xm out there 🤷🏻♂️. But the bugout is definitely crazy overpriced.
I have a 20cv custom Bugout on the way. All satin hardware, and I have Flytanium scales coming too. I guess a little easier than going with xxxadrenaline’s long shipping times. I’m very excited to get it all together, I think it’s a perfect build.
Its a knife! Its made to cut. You don't have to like the knife. A lot of people love the knife. Its a huge hit for Benchmade. If you want a heavy small knife why don't you buy a small Chris Reeve Sabenza?. I love how light the Bug out is. It feels different. Its plastic. The Mini Griptilian is plastic. I love both knives. There are plenty of heavier knives if that is what you want.
You're killing me MC! I just sold my bugount and now I need to get another one. I knew I should have passed on this video but now I'm stuck. No way I can unsee that and now it's going to cost me almost $300 for my next knife! That knife rocks! Damit!
FRN is an excellent material for a tool handle. Water, temperature and abrasion resistant that can take a hard impact in an extremely light weight format. With the blade deployed on your Bugout hammer down on the handles of FRN and Titanium and compare the damage. I'm not against the titanium handles, I like them but FRN can be misunderstood.
@ Hiker Marapese... 'Form follows function' is beautiful. Some people get it, some people don't. It's usually pretty obvious who's who. My Spyderco FRN Stretch ZDP (B.R.G.) and 9-way improved Native 5 Salt (now French's mustard yellow) are, quite noticeably, the creme-de-la-creme standouts for fit and finish among the FRN Spydercos in my experience; and they certainly *feel* like "higher end production knives", not anything "cheaped out" by any reasonable estimation... aside from, maybe, the circa 3" Natives' inherent reluctance to be a Spydie flicker. The one G10 version Stretch adds *a full ounce* to the long bladed 3.38 ounce FRN Stretch to no useful purpose (and for a lot of folks, more pedestrian looks and probably those too-typical slab-sided Spyderco G10 hot spots in use).
Anodized blue thumb studs and back spacer aaaand Titanium screws can be Beautiful 🤩 Anyway i totaly agree with u on the feeling of the stock Grigory Scales for me put Titanium or copper scales even g10 Scales and the bugout become totally different
Great video. I’m looking to possible get a bugout or a barrage. I appreciate your opinion and how you say that people are also entitled to theirs. Too many reviewers sit one on side of the fence and if you don’t agree then you are wrong. Your humble approach is much more pleasant. Keep up the great work.
I love my stock Bugout for the blade, carry profile, light weight, and because the ergonomics work great with my hand. That said, the scales definitely feel a bit flimsy. I'm just trying to decide if I want to go the Ti route, or if I should splash on some CF instead or otherwise go with G10.
Nah M.C, you're right. Changing the scales particularly to titanium makes a hell of a difference. I was on the discord this past weekend trying to sell my Peña; this guy hit me up with a mini bugout with ti scales. We both got em' today and traded pictures and stories of what happy campers we were/are. 🔪 😎🙂🎸🤷♂️
My Flytanium scales arrived today. Found this video (and channel) while looking for other hardware pieces. Just ordered the rest from xxxadrenalinxxx. Nice to see what it'll look like when competed in a month or two! Can't wait. Now to check out the rest of your channel.
I love your modifications! It makes it unique to you. I recently purchased the Battlewash Bugout, and I love it! It’s my favorite knife in my collection. I also didn’t like the blue FRN, and I wanted to wait until they had one that didn’t require a modification. The esthetics of the Battlewash suits me just fine!
I have the Knifecenter red battleworn Bugout. I really like it. Its perfect for what its meant for. Light EDC tasks. I think it feels better then the normal FRN or whatever Benchmade calls their scale material. I know its the same thing but it feels sturdier then the blue ones I have handled. Nice they are easy to get too. Only MFG I have ever had a hard time getting ahold of sprints or exclusives is Spyderco lol. Keep striking out on all them but I ordered a sprint Spyderco PPT last night must not have went over that good since it came out quite a while ago but I have always wanted a PPT.
JesseLJohnson I have a hard time getting an exclusive Spyderco as well. Right now I’m just loving my Battlewash Bugout! I can’t put it down. You’re right about the FRN. It just feels so much better on the Battlewash.
@@ilovemycats33 I actually got 2 exclusives tonight. The Cutlery Shoppe exclusive PM3 with orange G10 and CTS-XHP. I got the satin and DLC version. I had the Satin in my cart from when they had the first release couple days ago didn't know it was still there. I rushed so fast to get the DLC in my cart at 8 tonight and to checkout I didn't even know I had the satin too till I got the receipt email. They sold out in seconds the other day they had them up for quite a while tonight and more coming up in a couple days too.
@@ilovemycats33 If you want one Cutlery Shoppe is releasing more tomorrow at 3 mountain time. They lasted a long time last night before they sold out so next drop might as well.
Bro did you know that, if you put a mini griptilian axis lock in, it gives you just a lil bit more purchase for the lock on those slab style scales. It was a totally worth it, 9 dollars
Got the scales and flytanium hardware in today, still waiting on the axis bar and pivot for xxxadrenalinxxx, but I’m loving it so far, I went with the benchmade satin mini deep carry clip, and it matches the scales perfectly, thanks for inspiring me to finally pull the trigger and build the bugout of my dreams
I got rockscale designs titanium aluminum blast. With the stock scales, I could never get the blade centered, but it was perfect after I swapped them out.
I broke Bugout with aluminium scales black m390 steel version, while opening first freaking beer with it, middle pivots flew off. Hundreds beers with spyderco shaman, with not even scratch.
I payed 172€ ($190) for the Black Version. It has the more sturdy scales, but I have still some issues with it: Bladeplay (it’s not much but it is there….when I tighten the pivot it’s gone but then it is very tight to open and close… The lock pin is simply not smooth and grates, even with a drop of oil. If someone gave it to me (without knowing Benchmade and their Hype…) I would have valued it at 40 bugs max! My brother didn‘t know Benchmade (I think he did Not know the butterfly logo stands for BenchmAde) and said: oh That was a cheap one?? 30€? No shit! It’s just insolent the pricing. It holds a good edge and is light and slim to carry, but they should put more work in adjusting and QC before they sell it. I mean it’s not a cheap knife…
Slicey, I believe Benchmade makes the mini deep carry clip in polished finish. Cal them and they will send you one for free if you ask for a replacement.
Well done looks great MC yea Zach Stuff has me hooked on bugout projects yea it’s expensive i agree there are knives I can buy but it’s fun I only have 3 and I’m still working on perfecting them I started with scales CF Basically the same TI scales you have and I just got micarta . I digg your rotation it’s my exact wishlist rotation very good upgrade and vid MC. Shout out to Zach Stuff you and Zach are in my top 5 reviewer channels peace brother
the bugout design philosophy should've made it perfect for someone like me (edc, backpacking, etc) but because of the flimsy scales i went with the griptilian
I'm really liking the lightweight of this knife at about 1.8 Oz. I am thinking about changing the scales even though it works fine like it is. I'm just not sure which material I should go with between titanium and carbon fiber. Does anyone here have experience with this knife with the carbon fiber scales? One upgrade that I did do was I took it apart and did a mirror polish on the bronze bushings and all the other friction points. By the way that makes this thing as smooth as butter. I lubed the bushings with Lucas red and tacky grease, which seems to be doing a great job. I just figured it would last longer than oil.
Just did copper flytanium, really liking it against black hardware and black Freak thumb stud swap...that backspace in black would really top it off. Did you have any centering issues on your upgrade?
Your version of the knife is really cool! It’s to bad that Benchmade does not allow you to build a version like this. Yours looks better than the carbon fiber and blue back spacer version that Benchmade sells
Inches to ounces implies only the length dimension matters. While it is a fun stat to track and I get that, I do require that my knives be 3 dimensional objects, and they Should vary for different uses.
This is the first time I've been truly attracted to the Bugout. Very nice scale and hardware choices. I've wanted to do this for my Manix 2 XL for a while but never seem to find titanium scales. All the mods out there for the Manix 2 are not for the XL :(
Hey, Metal Complex, do you think the back spacer mod *alone* would usefully stiffen up the feel of an otherwise standard issue Bugout... to the tune of thirty-four bucks? Can you get the brassy gold look of the two stock column spacers, by any chance? (EDIT: I answered my own question re: the 3 sold out brassy options.) Thanks!
Im building this with a 20cv bugout, new flytanium scales and ti standoffs instead of a full backspacer. All the parts are in the mail ...spent way to much for it lol
I like the pocket clip. I might see if Benchmade will sell me a few for my mini grips and a few other knives. I have the Knifecenter exclusive red battleworn Bugout. I know its the same FRN or whatever Benchmade calls the material but it feels different then the other Bugouts. It is I am assuming Cerakoted. I know the black blade coating is supposed to be Cerakote. I am however getting kinda sick of all the compression locks especially on flippers. So many of them hit you're finger if you don't get it out of the way real fast and the blade doesn't fully close on its own. I love Spyderco though I bought 16 of them in the past 5 weeks but on some models I think they could use something besides the compression lock.
I felt the same way about the griptilian. I ordered a g10 clone and swooped the fake 20cv blade with my 154cm for $30. I wish the people making the clone would just sell aftermarket parts so im not supporting cloning
There are still 20cv G10 grips out there. I have 2 of the minis and one full size but some sites still have them a year later. Most of the ones that are still out there though have partially serrated blades which I don't care for. One of my minis has it though the satin one I have. Or you could get the Ritter grip that Hogue is making now that is G10 and M390. Its an exclusive to one site I believe can't think of what it is though but there are plenty of videos of it out there. You can buy aftermarket scales to replace you're FRN grip too with G10, titanium, copper basically whatever you want you can buy.
i wanted a bugout till i held one in a store. my theory is bugout buyers and fans mostly bought the knife online, and are trying to convince everyone else it's an awesome knife, to make themselves feel better about spending 135 on a plastic knife.
I did the Ti/Fli-tanium scales for a month. There was still not as much give as the original scales. I also didnt like the weight. I love the OG scales.
I just bought the Knifecenter exclusive red battleworn one. I really like it. Different then all the blue ones everybody has or the green ones. I think it was $133 so a little more then a standard Bugout but it has that sweet Cerakote finish. I know the black blade is Cerakote assuming the scales are as well and the thumb studs and stand offs are red anodized the scales are red and black with that battleworn look like they Cerakoted them red then laid black over top and tumbled or blasted however they did it for some red to show through the black. And as far as I know they are still available a few weeks later in both satin and black blade.
facts about xxxadrenalinxxx, he has about every color except red 😞. something about makin the parts titanium in red is a bit harder than other colors, aluminum he said he could do n that color but who wants aluminum. so i went with blue everything, lock pin, pivot, spacers, screws, thumb studs n axis lock. yeah, he's a bit pricey compared to flytanium for screws but his blue is really rich not like flytanium where their blue is washed looking. dont know how to upload pics but yeah she's a beauty. black titanium awt scales, blue thumb studs, blue lock pin, blue axis lock, blue spacers. black screws for the lock pin, titanium pivot, titanium screw that holds the liner, black screw for 1st blue spacer than a blue screw for the 2nd spacer on the back. lynch polish deep carry clip with blue screws. love the weight the scales put on, makes the knife feel much more substantial. dont feel like its gonna break compared 2 the factory ones. by far my favorite edc. i pair it with the american lawman that i can beat the crap out of it without worrying about anything. oh and xxxadrenalinxxx can be found on ebay. he lives in australia so of course its gonna take sum time for shipment but he's well worth the wait
If your going to put down the bugout becasue it feels cheap then don’t buy a bugout , the bugout is a light knife thats smaller design for edc and comfort , I agree it does feel cheap but it is still quality benchmade quality , the bugout does feel cheap compared to only other benchmade knifes
It’s not as good as people think that it is? The knife is popular for a reason. People have the right to like whatever they want. The Bugout is a cool knife.
Yeah, I’m looking at the mini, and they STILL only offer the cheap looking scales-and in only three colors: black, white, or orange. At least you had more color options on the original. It actually looks like a knife I’d really enjoy, but not with those scales. You’re right-they should be offering both versions of the Bugout with upgraded scales. Why don’t they?
So, I dont want this to come across as a "bad" comment. This is a decision type comment. The reason is, I was not a fan of the bugout. I say was because when I finally got one it changed my mind 100%. As far as not as durable, ya I can see that. BUT, that said when I was cutting cardboard I did fell the flex. Now yes it flexed but still did about 10 heavy cardboard cuts was it held up fine. And just saying the baton comment, there is a channel that actually batons with the standard bugout, fake bugout, and the aluminum scales version of the bugout. Obviously the fake bugout failed, horribly but the regular bugout out, and the aluminum, held up no issue. It surprised the crap out of me. I think the channel is like Dutch something. I'm sorry I just found the channel, I can't remember. But it's like DBX? Anyways I'm getting side tracked. But they are way more durable that I tjought. That said, I did get the blade hq version with the 20cv and g10 scales version, and that flexed but not like the regular version. Did a similar task and not flex. Now, I'm a 370 pound, 6ft 1inch machinist guy so I'm not easy on my knifes. But, all this said I do want to get titanium scales to try lol
@@metal_complex Thank you for your answer ! They are absolutely gorgeous, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere at the moment :-(. I hope is is only temporary...
You are correct, changing the scales makes the knife how Benchmade should have made it in the first place.
If Benchmade made it with Titanium scales it would have cost $400+, despite being able to put one of these together for like $225 to $250 yourself.
They have plenty of other options with that weight and sturdy. The bugout is meant to be the lightest and thinnest possible. It kind of ruin the idea for me but that’s just me! I’m 100% happy with the "cheap" plastic scales for what i need it for
gotta take in consideration with pricing. g10 is alot cheaper to make rather than titanium

I like being able to comment from the future where now we can make that exact bugout stock in the bugout customizer
I payed 172€ ($190) for the Black Version. It has the more sturdy scales, but I have still some issues with it:
Bladeplay (it’s not much but it is there….when I tighten the pivot it’s gone but then it is very tight to open and close…
The lock pin is simply not smooth and grates, even with a drop of oil.
Slicey,
I believe Benchmade makes the mini deep carry clip in polished finish. Cal them and they will send you one for free if you ask for a replacement.
Good knowledge on the backspacer/scale matchup. I did want to ask that question between two separate companies 😁
This is so pretty! Reminds me of Iron Man's Mark II suit! "Bugout Mark II"
Better knife for every day carry, cf elite bug out or para 3 all blacked out?
Bugout designed to be a “tactical edc” knife?
Agree to disagree there. Keep ‘em coming MC!
ruclips.net/video/yqPefiwd4JE/видео.html
This video is why I say that. I don't necessarily fully subscribe to this idea either though.
Balance is only back heavy because of the spacer 👍 but yea I did the same thing but I went with rockscale. Great vid brother
I had a feeling you were going to pimp that bugout up such a great job
Yep, you could see it coming...
What finish do you have on the pivot screw and axis lock?? Satin or shiny?
I personally like the bugout like it is but I believe I would love it with titanium scales. Thanks for sharing great video bud
HEAVILY modified indeed! Nice and clean one of a kind. 👍
Where’s did you get the ti screws and pivote?!
Knives being light weight is a selling point now. There are plenty of heavy knives. You want a heavy knife? Try the old Buck 110!
Just did copper flytanium, really liking it against black hardware and black Freak thumb stud swap...that backspace in black would really top it off. Did you have any centering issues on your upgrade?
They offer a mini deep carry clip in polished satin. It comes with the 486 Saibu
Yep 👍
Can I get that exact link to that pocket clip please? Can’t find it for some reason
(EDIT: I answered my own question re: the 3 sold out brassy options.) Thanks!
where did you get the standoffs for this knife?
I like both scales! Built the same thing!! what kinda digital scale is that tho in the market for one.
Im building this with a 20cv bugout, new flytanium scales and ti standoffs instead of a full backspacer. All the parts are in the mail ...spent way to much for it lol
I would love copper scales and black hardware for my Bailout. That would simultaneously be sick and sexy.
I really want to customize my Bugout but I don't know which way I want to go. Yours looks bad@ss though! Excellent job MC.
The bugout is a great blade on a so so handle
Well obviously you could break them Metal Complex... You could probably break Titanium scales! We saw that gym pic 💪😉
facts about xxxadrenalinxxx, he has about every color except red 😞. something about makin the parts titanium in red is a bit harder than other colors, aluminum he said he could do n that color but who wants aluminum. so i went with blue everything, lock pin, pivot, spacers, screws, thumb studs n axis lock. yeah, he's a bit pricey compared to flytanium for screws but his blue is really rich not like flytanium where their blue is washed looking. dont know how to upload pics but yeah she's a beauty. black titanium awt scales, blue thumb studs, blue lock pin, blue axis lock, blue spacers. black screws for the lock pin, titanium pivot, titanium screw that holds the liner, black screw for 1st blue spacer than a blue screw for the 2nd spacer on the back. lynch polish deep carry clip with blue screws. love the weight the scales put on, makes the knife feel much more substantial. dont feel like its gonna break compared 2 the factory ones. by far my favorite edc. i pair it with the american lawman that i can beat the crap out of it without worrying about anything. oh and xxxadrenalinxxx can be found on ebay. he lives in australia so of course its gonna take sum time for shipment but he's well worth the wait
Like it. Thanks for sharing ! I agree on the scales.
That’s dope! How do I find the hardware? Don’t like the anodized or black either. Just plain Jane is all I want. Love this knife!!!
Check the description 😊👍
I love it too.. is the pocket clip oem or what? I heard u mention zach’s stuff...
I pried and batoned with a Bugout. It took it
And here I am fidgeting with my Bugout
Love the Mono look great job!!🦊😁🐅🤗🍥🐺
Hey, I love this knife look. Did you get the satin finish or shiny ti silver finish from xxxadrenalinexxx for the hardwares?
Satin 👍
What scales r those?
The name “bugout” just seems deceiving. I think they should’ve called it the Urban or something similar.
backpacker
@ Forrest Gee... My K390 Spyderco Urban responds, "Taken, dude!" ...BTW, you were, er... even temporarily deceived by the spec??
The "pocketpacker"
Again great taste MC! Awesome.
Nice bugout build! Let me know if you ever want to sell it. 😉
I have someone first in line, but if you'd like seconds, you can email me! (Email in description at the very bottom)
Looks great MC.
Blue stand offs could have looked great with it
Wasn’t it designed as a backpacking knife vs a tactical knife like you stated? In any event nice vid
270$ Bugout, that's ridiculous :D but it's so perfect... I regret that I sold mine, now I need to buy new one just to make it looks like this one :D
I looked up the description and didn't find a link to these precise scales, which are gorgeous. Could someone please tell me where to find them ?
They're flytanium scales. You can get them on the flytanium website, as well as retailers like BHQ 👍
@@metal_complex Thank you for your answer ! They are absolutely gorgeous, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere at the moment :-(. I hope is is only temporary...
Expensive size comparison knife 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 however great build.. looks awesome.. if mine maybe a pop of color..
"Baked bean colored scales"
😂
only one in the world...money sure can buy happiness.
need those nice shiny body screws, thumb studs, pivot, and lockbar - how? where?
Xxxadrenalinexxx on ebay and instagram 👍
I need to get these scales for my Bugger
Beautiful
