  • Round Robins are simply a way of playing a different sample of the same sound each time you press the same key, so that, like most acoustic instruments, each note sounds slightly different for added realism. This avoids the typical 'machine gun' sound.
In this tutorial, we're going to look at five different ways to create round robins. First, how it works in Live 12's Sampler, then two alternatives in Sampler for Live 11 and below. And last, but not least, I'll show you two options without Sampler that can be used even in Live Lite, as well as in older versions of Live.

WHOA I had no clue ableton 12 added that round robin feature. Thanks for making vids as always :)

I was literally struggling with this two days ago. I am so glad you posted this. Thank you.

Thanks! I didn't know the term nor what it was. Great video.

nice use case with the drum rack implementation

Thank you. It's very helpful in avoiding the 'machine gun' effect for drum sounds.

Cool video! Instead of using Sampler's internal LFO you could also use the "Velocity" MIDI device (for "classic" round robin style sampling like often found in Drum Plugins where different velocities will trigger different hits of the same snare/kick/etc) or anything Max4Live to modulate the sample selector to have more direct control over when which zone is active!

Yes, there are more options how to achieve round robins, but I wanted to stick with the basics. I'm not a fan of using velocity, and I wanted to show how it's possible without the use of Max for Live. Five ways seemed enough and it took quite a while to shoot and edit. Hopefully it will give people ideas how to approach problem solving.

I also like to use these techniques with Simpler Slices and quantized transposition devices. It’s fun.
Might also work with Mapping a Saw Up Ramp from an LFO Modulator to the Chain Selector, force some constraint in mapping or green map tab thingy, and set sync to like one bar or whatever.
Might also be possible to sacrifice Velocity to achieve some similar results but vel is important IMO. Still fun to work with though.

Great ideas. Yes, you can 'misuse' this technique in so many ways. I wouldn't want to sacrifice velocity.

@@sonicbloomtuts These days, it’s difficult for me to think ‘misuse’ of any sort of technique. I’d rather like to perceive it as ‘different approaches’. Like how martial arts has many different ways to throw a punch or kick. Some are completely different, others are the same but have different impacts, angles, targets. Then there’s the combinations all.
Round Robin Modulation, Round Robin Preseter Trigger, Multi-CC Channel Round Robin Velocity AND MIDI AND Modulation. Round Robin LFO Logic Gates that trigger other modulations. Round Robin MIDI channel Switching.
Guess all the above wouldn’t be called ‘Round Robin’ but you get the idea. It’s endless. It’s beautiful. We’re lucky to have the technology.

@@Laternite That's why the use of ' ' around misuse. I think using things in creative ways that weren't the initial intention is half the fun.

@@sonicbloomtuts Sorry, didn’t mean to come across as a douche. I agree with you and understand…for me, it’s ALL the fun…even the ‘failed’ experiments…I absolutely live for it: experimenting, discovering, exploring - data streams as modulation. Happy New Year.
