    A couple of years ago God told me to get my house in order and be prepared to take care of my family. As I have funds and ability I am obeying. I have beefed up my food storage though growing my own meat, fruit, and veggies I am used to putting up a year’s worth of food when available. I have put in a pond so there is always access to water. We have always heated with wood but I also got a wood cookstove- which I love! Alternate sources of light, etc. Yes, God does provide but we also have a part in that - He’s not our servant, we are His.

    Aside from seeds, I have also stocked up on bagged organic soil... because of all the chemicals they spray in the air. I have been blessed with an enclosed front porch that I have grown veggies from seeds (packets and from previously grown) in pots successfully. Not sure if it's necessary, but I hand pollinate the blooms.

      I was wondering if anyone would say we should stock up on soil. My raised beds are full so I’m skipping that but for someone who’s getting started, will be getting started in the future, or grows in pots that’s a great idea. During Covid contaminated soil was being sold because there was such a demand. It’s a great idea to get some while it’s available.

    Containers can definitely be an option even in your house. A planter of lettuces, a couple tomatoes plants, peppers, etc. can easily be done indoors. Seeds, are definitely important. Just got one large watermelon with seeds. We are half way through it and have near 100 seeds already. Planning on planting them this next spring to see how they do as an experiment. You can seed save from store bought items. Most in my experience will grow even hybrids can grow. A hybrid is a mix of a mommy and daddy plant so they will revert back to one or the other. So you will still get a tomato from tomato seeds .

    Love MIGardener, great germination with his seeds. Luke is a hard working fella and love his informative videos. Always pick up marked down seeds and you are correct, stored properly they are still viable, such a great tip.

    I liked the comparison about putting money in the bank. I never thought of it that way, but it makes perfect sense. I’ve been buying in bulk and keeping a well-stocked pantry and deep freezer for several years now. For no other reason than I think it’s smart to be prepared. When Covid happened and there were shortages, my family and I were unaffected by it because I had enough food between the pantry and freezer to easily feed us for two months if not longer. And not having to worry or stress about things like that is a huge blessing. I agree that the Lord provides for us and in this case provides us with the tools and abilities we need.

    During Covid I dont think it was so much seed hoarding as much as so many people decided to garden then. Also we werent allowed to buy seeds at WalMart. They were roped off & not considered necessary so those weren't available. Another thing to consider is seed saving. Seeds that come from plants grown in your soil, climate, etc will adapt to do better in that area. This can only be done with organic/heritage seeds. Hybrids can't do this.

    Hi, its my first time watching you.
    Things to consider: our electric could go down, any generator needs to be able to be charged by Solor!
    Otherwise what good are the freezers full of food.
    Also, grains and flour spoil quickly. Bay leaves keep the bug larva from hatching. They need to be double wrapped, unopened in smaller quantities, then in those 5 gal. With lids or preferably metal garbage containers, against rodents. Need the special keep dry packets in with them. Grains once opened, and not refrigerated can spoil in one year.

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  6 месяцев назад

      I appreciate your tips! I will add that whole wheat berries do not spoil in one year. They can be kept indefinitely if stored properly.

    Thank you for sharing. Yes MI Gardener is a great seed source. I would also try to incorporate some heirloom varieties when purchasing from the place of your choice. It would be a backup in case you couldnt purchase seeds in the future for whatever reason. That way you could save your own seeds.

    It is better to stock whole grains than to stock flour. In part, the flour is processed, removed from i.a. parts of the grain which can go rancid and partly flour loses 45% of its nutrients in the first day. Grain can be lived on as the only food. It contains everything you need apart from water. Flour is devoid of minerals, vitamins, oil and you will lack everything that is sifted from. Whole grains must be ground to make flour and the most nutritious bread is obtained by grinding just before baking.

    I think you are an absolute DARLING, and you need not explain yourself, or be on the defense, so often, with what you are accomplishing/producing. Anyone judging you for preparing your family and community, will be judged by the Righteous One, in due time. Or they will have nothing when the "time of need" comes. You do you, Boo 🫶🏼. You are amazing... And literally doing the Lord's work. Just want you to know you have nothing to apologize for. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✝️✝️✝️

    I am attempting to grow food but as I am in an apt. I am collecting cans and bags and boxes of food and dried fruit, peanut butter, etc. I do have a dehydrator, but the food is super expensive! I don’t see the prices at our farmer’s markets being reasonable enough to make dehydrating viable!
    I have to use containers and purchase bagged dirt. Its very expense.
    I am older and can’t buy a home and land, generator, water catchment and purification system, freezer full if food,, chickens, cows. I don’t have a basement to set up hydroponics and grow light gardens. I don’t own a gun to go hunting. , I can’t even afford all the expensive canning equipment!!! Will the gov. In the future confiscate your food like they do in Europe during war? Your farm. I don’t think we should panic, but some of us can’t do all these great prep-per ideas!
    I am trying not to feel hopeless or fearful.

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  6 месяцев назад

      It’s okay! I think maybe take a step back and don’t think about all the things you can’t do. Look around at your current circumstances and ponder what you CAN do. And pray about it. For example, you mentioned not being able to afford the food. Perhaps there is someone in your life who has abundance and would be willing to share. The Lord provides, keep your eyes and heart open.

      Hello! I reached out and asked because I didn’t want to speak for them. Here’s what they said, “Our seeds are non-GMO and heirloom! The only seeds that are not heirloom are some sweet corn varieties that are labeled as hybrid in their descriptions. They are all grown using organic methods, but are not certified organic due to the expense of obtaining and maintaining the certification.”
