Riding Around Loja With Sounds Of The City (no music, and no talking)

A fast bike tour around Loja, Ecuador on a beautiful morning. This video is for people who like to ride bikes. If you don't ride bikes you might think this is boring. If you do ride bikes and want to ride bikes in Loja then you might enjoy this video of me riding my road bike around town.
A note to the people who worry I'll get hurt: That's very kind of you and I appreciate it. But, I'll be ok. I'm an extreeeeemely experienced cyclist and I am sure I'm paying far more attention to what's happening around me than all these crazy drivers here who are cruising along next to me and texting...:) Now that I'm used to the almost total lack of road rules observed by drivers here I know what drivers are going to do before they do. I'll be ok, but thanks again. You're awesome.

So the stop signs say "PARE" in Ecuador? Was that a dedicated bus lane around the 9:00 mark? Except for the buses, those are great for biking! Oh, they have sandy roads there too.

Thank you for the tour. May I ask why you chose Loja over Cuenca?

Thanks for watching! Good question, we chose Loja because it is smaller and has less expats (we wanted to actually learn Spanish and we knew we wouldn't learn it if we were hanging out with English speaking expats all the time) and it has less rain than Cuenca, although i will say there is much more rain here in Loja than i was expecting. Those were the main two reasons for us. I hope this helps!

How is air quality in Loja. I’m visiting Cuenca and to me the air pollution is very bad.

It can be really bad here in downtown Loja. Trucks and busses spew filthy black smoke everywhere. If you're behind a bus you can't breathe. Once you get out of town though it's beautiful and clear.

Why do you think there aren't more bicyclists in Ecuadorian cities?

Because drivers here are so dangerous. Pedestrians are killed crossing the streets here. Riding a bike here comes with considerable risk. For that matter being a pedestrian here does too. Having said that, there is a bike community here and they do ride a lot! The more people we have Riding bikes the more car drivers will become aware we exist!

Do the driver's respect bicycles in Loja? Have you even been clipped by a car?

No, drivers here don't respect anyone. They will honk and zoom by a woman pushing a baby in a stroller crossing in a crosswalk! You'll see some of the worst, most careless drivers you've ever seen here in Loja. Pedestrians are frequently killed and car accidents are common. No, I've never been clipped. I'm too fast :)
