The music was not written by Pelageya. This is a folk song. The story is almost 350 years old - this is a legend about a dream of a Volga kossak Stepan Razin he'd seen in his sleep before he was captured and executed. Pelageya's performance of this song is one of the best I've ever heard!

So very beautiful. I regret how many years had to pass before I first heard this and so many other wonderful Russian songs. I strongly suspect that Americans now taking Russian classes are seldom introduced to these songs because of the same lingering "cold war stupidities" that denied me exposure when I was young.
