hi my name is alisha I am 15 in year 11 about to take my gcses I really want to become a veterinary nurse when I'm older but I don't know how to get there
Hi Alisha, The best source of information is probably the RCVS. They have a great page on their website about becoming a nurse and how to get there. - You can find that here - www.rcvs.org.uk/education/i-want-to-be-a-veterinary-nurse/ Good luck!
Hi Amy, We accept applications directly out of High School, so long as you get the grades. We have more information on it on our website if you'd like to take a look, but it'll be a few years yet before you need to worry about your application! www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme
Hi Amy, If you are in Scotland then the requirements are: AAAAB Five Highers including Chemistry (A), Biology (A) and either Mathematics or Physics to be achieved by the end of S5. If Biology has not been studied in S5, it should be taken in S6 to Higher level. BB at Advanced Higher in Chemistry and another science subject. If possible Advanced Higher Biology, as this will be beneficial for the first year of the course. If Physics has not previously been studied to Standard Grade or Higher level, it should be studied in sixth year to either Standard Grade, National 5, Intermediate 2 or Higher level. If you are in England then the requirements are: Three A levels: AAA in Chemistry, Biology and one other subject approved for entry to the veterinary degree programme. if you live elsewhere then it's best to check our webpage here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/bvms-degree/5-year-programme/academic-requirements Please note that these do change a little occasionally, so make sure to check back for the most up to date information before you make any decisions on your subjects.
i am 17 years old I have always wanted to work in the medical field. I love animals and i think that is the right way. The only thing that concerns me is the chemistry- is it less than a human med program? The thing that keeps me on the idea to be a vet is biology, I love it.
Hello, I'm afraid that chemistry is a core subject for entry into veterinary medicine, just the same as human medicine. I hope that you are successful and find your way into the medical programme you choose!
I’m in my last year of middle school, I got excepted into a vet tech program for next year. It’s crazy, I know, I’m starting early, I was surprised that they had something like that in high school. I’m excited, I’ve been around livestock since I was born, I’ve been riding horses since I was a baby. I’m hoping to become a large animal vet, if not full equine. I recently bought my very own horse, a 15.2 hand blue roan quarter horse, named cricket. For graduation I’m taking my best friend, (who’s been riding with me since we were 6) and going to a dude ranch in Del Rio, Tennessee. I’ve done roundups before with herds of horses but have never done a cattle drive. We’re going to a ranch with over 3000 acres of land, we decided to do an overnight cattle drive. I hope everybody is having a great day!
Hello, Our entry requirements from India ca be found on our international page here - www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/country/asia/south-asia/india - under "Vet Medicine". You can find more about applying here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme Or if you would like to get in touch with out admissions team, you can e-mail them on VetUG@ed.ac.uk. I hope that helps!
I'm currently a sophomore in high school, but I'm taking three vet-related classes this year, 2 next year, and one my Senior year (unless more classes are added to our curriculum). As soon as we get the OK by our school's principal, students will be able to register their animals with the school to be able to bring them to class for a hands-on experience. Although we're not too far into the school year, I am already excited to start learning as much as I can before attending a college. I do not expect to apply to your school (though it looks like an amazing learning place for aspiring vets), but I hope there are local colleges around my current household. If anyone would be as kind to maybe tell me what grades/GPA is expected in high school before attending Vet School in the united states? Thank you so much, Best wishes x
Hey! So I definitely have my mind set on becoming a vet when I’m older, I’m going to be doing a week long course on veterinary work in April. And I am applying for a technical school that provides Health services. I’ve heard that to go to a veterinary school, you must have a degree in biology. Is this true?
Hi Pandalicious, At Edinburgh we offer two options - you can do a 5 year degree directly from High School, which doesn't require a degree first. We also offer a 4 year undergraduate programme for people who have done a relevant degree. Some parts of the world will require a degree first, but that's not a requirement for us, so you can indeed come directly from School. We've got more information on studying with us here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying or feel free to ask if you have any questions. Thanks!
Hi Rainboom, Science subjects are definitely worth concentrating on, so biology and chemistry, but also physics and maths too. It's a few years until you have to make any decisions that can't be changed, so I would enjoy school for now, see what you like doing and what you are good at and when the time comes to pick your subjects for qualifications, take a look at what you need to get into the career you like the look of and make sure that you are on the right path. Good luck!
Hi angelika, We have a list of the subjects and grades you need on our website here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements Typically, you need high scores in science subjects, so chemistry, biology, physics and maths. Let us know if you have any more questions. Good luck!
In the majority of places, they are kept like that, in Iceland this is how they are kept for the whole winter, on concrete with two chains to hold their head in place, and their shit stuck to their skin, only the udders are wiped before milking.
I can assure you that these cows have great lives, after all they're used in one go the top veterinary schools. They don't look stressed or sad to me and look rather calm, they will have done it so many times that they know not to be scared
So as someone who shows cows I can tell you they’re actually very calm and seem happy. Those are heats gates which are specifically designed to be used in veterinary examinations. If the cows were upset you would see them freaking out, throwing their heads around, and probably mooing a lot.
Hey, I was wondering if u could ask some of the students what subjects they took in school ? I am currently 15 and I'm not sure of all the approved subjects and which subjects I'll need to crash next year.
Hi Mari, If you are in Scotland then the requirements are: AAAAB Five Highers including Chemistry (A), Biology (A) and either Mathematics or Physics to be achieved by the end of S5. If you visit the page here: www.ed.ac.uk/studying/undergraduate/entry-requirements there is a link to the list of approved subjects for university entry which can make up the other subjects for entry. If you have specific questions about a subject, you can always contact our admissions team on vetug@ed.ac.uk. I hope that helps, let us know if you have more questions!
Hello there sir/maam, I am in year 7 and I’m determined to become a vet at all costs, I am in top sets for everything and it’s my biggest wish to join your beautiful school. I have a special connection with all animals and a stomach of steel, and everything shown in this video makes me even more certain that I want to put all my work and effort into learning. So, please, tell me where I go from my GCSE’s to join your school. Thank you so much ☺️
Hello! It's lovely to hear that you're so determined to become a vet - with that kind of passion, I am sure you’ll be successful! These are just some broad bits of advice, if you want specifics, then I would suggest checking out our website - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme - as we have all the detailed information that you’ll need. Academically, you want to be looking at sciences - in England we require three A levels all at grade A when you get that far and they have to be Chemistry, Biology and one other approved subject. You can find a list on the website, and a lot of academic subjects are accepted as your third choice, but a lot of people pick a choice they enjoy and they will prove useful for the degree. Non academics include work experience and while we don’t mandate a set amount, we suggest as a start: Seeing veterinary practice with both large and small animal vets. Working on livestock farms. Working in other animal establishments, such as zoos, kennels, catteries, wildlife centres, pig farms, poultry farms and stables A day at an abattoir is recommended but not demanded We encourage experience gained in veterinary or medical laboratories to help you appreciate the scientific basis of veterinary medicine Some of these will not be possible until you are over 16 and in all cases I would strongly recommend having a notebook where you keep a record of all work experience, dates, key findings and so forth, so that when you come to complete a work experience form, you have all the details you need. At this stage, I would suggest putting your energy into your school work and enjoying all the extra-curricular activities that you enjoy doing. If you like sports, play sport, if you enjoy music or acting, do those and just keep a clear idea of what you need to accomplish academically at each point and I am sure you’ll do really well. Good luck!
Hi Anya, Sorry for the slow reply. You should gain as much and as varied as practical work experience as possible, which should include time spent on: - Seeing veterinary practice, both large and small animal if possible. - Livestock farms - dairying and lambing are particularly useful. - Other animal establishments, such as zoos, kennels, catteries, wildlife centres, pig farms, poultry farms and stables. - A day at an abattoir is recommended but not demanded. We encourage experience gained in veterinary or medical laboratories to help you appreciate the scientific basis of veterinary medicine. We do not ask for specific types or the number of days/weeks required for work experience as it depends, to some extent, on the opportunities available to individual candidates. The broader the experience, the better but you should not gain experience to the detriment of your academic studies. Good luck!
Would it be okay if you were vegan and believed in animal rights going to college or uni. So like if you dissect an animal I wouldn't have to take part or would that ruin my chances of being a vet?
Melissa xx that would definitely ruin your chances of being a vet as it is important to know the complete structure of an animal for references later on
Hi Lauren, Sorry for the delay in our reply. Yes, absolutely. A good percentage of our students are English and most join us straight from school. You can find out more about the admissions process here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme
Hi Alice, You can find lots of information on fees and entry requirements on our website here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme If you have any questions after looking through that, then feel free to drop our admissions team an e-mail on VetUG@ed.ac.uk. Thanks!
Hi, I choose my GCSE options soon so I'm wondering would I be accepted if I take English, chemistry and biology for A-level or would it have to be more science based?
Hi Tom, Yes, for a vet degree at Edinburgh, at A-level you need Chemistry, Biology and one other approved subject. English looks to be on our list of approved subjects. If Physics has not been studied to A level, a good pass at GCSE is required. You can find all the details here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements Hope that helps!
Do this vet college offers an externship opportunity to vet students from another country? I saw a data that University of Edinburgh is in the high rank of vet colleges in the world. So I hope experience their education. Actually most of our country's vet colleges focus on theory(not practical clinic).
Hi Jennifer, Sorry for the delay in replying. Absolutely, we accept students from all over the world and we have many each year from Ireland. You can find all the information about applying on our website here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/applying or if you have specific questions, then you can either reply to this message, or contact our Veterinary Undergraduate team on VetUG@ed.ac.uk. I hope that helps.
Hmm I I have a question do you still get excepted even if you have an allergy because I am allergic to cats and dust (some species of parrots produce dust)
Hello! Yes, that's no problem at all. We have students who have all sorts of different allergies and accommodations can be put in place to protect you.
Hi Dawn, Sorry for the late reply. We have students with a wide range of allergies and so long as we can find an accommodation to allow you to manage the allergy safely, then there would be no difference in the application procedure.
My quail chick just died in my hands he had a severe diarrhea and he died trying to vomit very hard . Please tell me the reason .was it a specific disease . should I be worried for my other pets .
My Daughter is 12 and an aspiring Vet, any advice for a father who is 100% supporting her decision? Currently we are home studying the CGP KS3 higher in Math, Science and English
Hi Tony, that sounds great! I would recommend having a look at degree information on our website to find out about academic and non-academic (work experience) requirements for entry that your daughter should aim to meet in the future should she decide to apply to study at our school. You can find that information here: www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/undergraduate/bvms/5-year-programme
I’m currently choosing my gcse would English Chemistry Biology Physic Maths Further Maths History Geography Drama Moving image He Spanish Be ok or are there any others I would need to take to have a better chance or getting accepted in the future
Hi cowgirl 03, Those look like a good start - when you get to A level, you are looking at three A levels: AAA in Chemistry, Biology and one other subject approved for entry to the veterinary degree programme. (Here is the list of approved subjects, but feel free to check with our admissions team if you are concerned - www.ed.ac.uk/studying/undergraduate/entry-requirements/ruk/approved-subjects) You can find more on our academic requirements page here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements Good luck and feel free to get in touch if you want any more information - our admissions team can be reached on VetUG@ed.ac.uk.
Hello i’m about to choose my IGCSE subjects and i’d like to know what are the requirements to enter A Vet school or University - will Physics or maths be compulsory in the A levels?
Hi Sarah, For our five year programme, the requirements at A level are "Three A levels: AAA in Chemistry, Biology and one other subject approved for entry to the veterinary degree programme." You can find the full reqierments on our website here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements or feel free to contact our admission team on VetUg@ed.ac.uk.
I am from nepal i am looking forward to be a vetenarian. I have completed my 12th standard . How can i apply in colleges like these for my bachelor's degree in vetenarian science
Hi Alex, It's probably best to drop our undergraduate admissions team an e-mail and check with them, as they can give you the best guidance on this question. - vetug@ed.ac.uk Thanks!
I study DSE in Hong Kong and I take Biology, Chemistry and Economics. I do not study Physics, would I able to get into the vet school in the University of Edinburgh. Thank you and appreciate your help.
Hi Winnie, Our web page with Hong Kong entry requirements is here - www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/country/asia/east-asia/hong-kong if you'd like more specific information, please e-mail our admissions team on vetug@ed.ac.uk. Thanks!
Hi I am a 16 year old and I’m already looking for universities where I can study, I am from South Africa and would love to know the requirements for an international student like me
Hi Elisa, Absolutely, we have students from all over the world. You can find lots of information on our website here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying or contact our admissions team directly on VetUg@ed.c.uk. Thanks!
Hi Seow, It's probably best to send specific questions like this to our admissions team at vetug@ed.ac.uk. That way if you have follow ups queries they can be more easily addressed. Thanks!
Hi Maria, Absolutely, we accept students from all over the world. We have information on things like academic requirements on our website here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying and if you have specific questions then you can get in touch with our undergraduate admissions team on VetUG@ed.ac.uk. I hope that helps!
Hi angelika, I'm glad to hear you want to be a vet - good luck! University fees depend on where you live - for many of our students they don't have to pay anything, but for some, yes, there are fees. As you still have a good few years before you can apply to Veterinary School, I wouldn't worry about the fees just now, but concentrate on getting good grades in school and when you are a little older, start thinking about getting some practical experience volunteering to help work with animals. Good luck and hopefully we'll see you in the future, as one of our students!
Hello! I hope Im not too late but I wanted to ask about the subjects I would need to take in HighSchool. My ambition is to be a Vet! Do I need to take Physics in Highschool, IGCSE, A-Level to be a Veterinarian? Thanks!
Hi Safwa, Sorry for the delay in our reply. You don't need physics to A-level, as you can take other things instead, but if you need it to at least GCSE level. You can find our general requirements here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements or there are links through to other countries if you are not based in the UK. Hope that helps, if you need more info then please let us know, or you are always welcome to e-mail our undergraduate admissions team on vetug@ed.ac.uk and they'll be happy to help. Thanks!
Hi Leo, Our entry requirements for India can be found on our international page here under "Vet Medicine" - www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/country/asia/south-asia/india You can find out more about applying here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme Or if you would like to get in touch with our admissions team, you can e-mail them on VetUG@ed.ac.uk. Hope that helps!
A while ago I wanted to become a vet, but I got interested in computing science and graphics at school and when it came to S3 subject choices I swapped biology for spanish, since I was good at that. If I was to change my mind and wanted to be a vet again would I be able to pick biology for S5 and S6 or would I have been required to learn it in S3 and S4. Because I’ve had some second thoughts recently but my subject form has already been handed in.
Hi Darth, as long as your school lets you, it's okay to take biology later - you can find info on our website here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements
Hi, i am currently a sophomore. And going to apply for vet school after graduate. Can you give me some advises about how to find an internship with vet? Or how to get a job in vet? Thanks really much.
Hi Pangpang, Are you looking to get experience with a vet before applying for your undergraduate? We recommend speaking to as many vets as possible and trying to get experience with small animal vets, equine and also production animal vets if possible, as that will give you the best range of experience. We also recommend visiting livestock farms, diary and lambing and particularly useful. Experience gained in medical laboratories is also very helpful. We have more information here: www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/4-year-programme/non-academic-requirements We understand that it can be difficult to get placements, but sometimes you have to keep trying as many different practices as possible and a lot of vets will be willing to give experience to someone who wants to join the profession, as they needed to get that help themselves! I hope that helps, if you have more specific questions, then feel free to e-mail our undergraduate admissions team on vetUG@ed.ac.uk, and they are happy to offer lots more advice. Thanks!
Hi Poppy and Pets, Absolutely, we ask for a wide variety of work experience as a key part of the application process, so as long as you make the minimum academic requirements, your work with animals will be very useful. If you're worried about any part of applying, then you are always welcome to e-mail our admissions team on vetug@ed.ac.uk and they'll be happy to help. Thanks!
Hi Arvind, If you're looking to do a PhD, then we have a wide range of taught and research programmes, and online and in person options. If you're looking to do an internship or residency, then we advertise them on our page here, hen available - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/services/vacancies
Hi Emma, We accept students straight from high school if they make the entry requirements. We also have a shortened course for people who have done a relevant first degree that is a 4 year, rather than a 5 year programme.

Hi Cr1 Ew, We offer two courses, a 5 year course with direct entry and a 4 year course for those who have done a first degree. You can find the information, including the academic requirements, on our website here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying. If you were looking at the 4 year course, it would require an overall GPA of 3.4 (4 point scale) in an appropriate Biological or Animal Science subject. Hope that helps!
Sinister Fibsomuch I don't think vet is only for girls :) anyone can do it!! I mean come on, women do men jobs as well so I think it wouldn't be weird 😄
Hi Anshul, Among other things, we use stethoscopes to listen to animal heartbeats, trying to assess if there are any problems. They can be an excellent diagnostic tool. I hope that helps.
Hi Mohit, We have students from all over the world. You can find information on our course here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/undergraduate/bvms and specific entry requirements for India here - www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/country/asia/south-asia/india

Hi Amy, The School was founded nearly 200 years ago by a man called William Dick and we are named after him. You can find out more about him here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/about/history
Good luck Amy! A degree in Veterinary Medicine needs very good grades, but if you work hard then I am sure you can manage it. We'll be wishing you luck all the way through. We're based in Edinburgh, Scotland, but we have students from all over the world who study here, so wherever you are based you'd be completely at home here!
+The Dick Vet thank you for the good luck, I guess I will have to sort something out when I'm older to get to your school as I live in England (Birmingham) :-) I searched grades on the internet and saw you need a grade C in maths English science and 2 other subjects is that right.
I remember looking at this videi about a year ago, and now I see it on my feed , and I AM a first year vet student... 😍😍
Hooray - well done!
Congrats! Good luck!

I’ve done roundups before with herds of horses but have never done a cattle drive. We’re going to a ranch with over 3000 acres of land, we decided to do an overnight cattle drive. I hope everybody is having a great day!
Congratulations on getting into the vet tech programme and good luck becoming a large animal or equine vet!
The Dick Vet Thank you, it means a lot!

MADRAS VETERINARY COLLEGE - The Best
Bright future waiting in the field of veterinary
yes,I am a vet student in Bangladesh. I wish I will complete ms in this institution
Hey! So I definitely have my mind set on becoming a vet when I’m older, I’m going to be doing a week long course on veterinary work in April. And I am applying for a technical school that provides Health services. I’ve heard that to go to a veterinary school, you must have a degree in biology. Is this true?
Hi Pandalicious,
At Edinburgh we offer two options - you can do a 5 year degree directly from High School, which doesn't require a degree first.
Thanks!
The Dick Vet thank you!
Good luck and keep us in mind when you are applying! We'd love to have you come study with us.
nice information,
I’m 12 and I really want to become a vet. I don’t know it just seems so cool treating and caring for animals. Should I try hard in biology?
Hi Rainboom,
Science subjects are definitely worth concentrating on, so biology and chemistry, but also physics and maths too.
It's a few years until you have to make any decisions that can't be changed, so I would enjoy school for now, see what you like doing and what you are good at and when the time comes to pick your subjects for qualifications, take a look at what you need to get into the career you like the look of and make sure that you are on the right path.
Good luck!
I'm wondering what subjects I have to study in high school to get into your university
Hi angelika,
We have a list of the subjects and grades you need on our website here -
www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements
Typically, you need high scores in science subjects, so chemistry, biology, physics and maths.
Let us know if you have any more questions.
Good luck!
Those cows look really sad :\
Julie Shriver They're not always kept like that, it was just so they could check on them
I would feel the same if I saw the veterinary students for one millionth time.
Hi Mari,
If you are in Scotland then the requirements are:
AAAAB Five Highers including Chemistry (A), Biology (A) and either Mathematics or Physics to be achieved by the end of S5.
Mari Mcdonagh you will need English, math, chemistry and biology.
Hello there sir/maam,
I am in year 7 and I’m determined to become a vet at all costs, I am in top sets for everything and it’s my biggest wish to join your beautiful school.
Non academics include work experience and while we don’t mandate a set amount, we suggest as a start:
Seeing veterinary practice with both large and small animal vets.
Working on livestock farms.
Working in other animal establishments, such as zoos, kennels, catteries, wildlife centres, pig farms, poultry farms and stables
A day at an abattoir is recommended but not demanded
We encourage experience gained in veterinary or medical laboratories to help you appreciate the scientific basis of veterinary medicine
Some of these will not be possible until you are over 16 and in all cases I would strongly recommend having a notebook where you keep a record of all work experience, dates, key findings and so forth, so that when you come to complete a work experience form, you have all the details you need.
Good luck!
thank you, of course I’ll do that. Also, may i ask you about the accommodation? so do you have dormitories?@The Dick Vet
I really want to go there !!!
I’m currently in year 11 and I’d love to come here, what are the requirements for work experience?
Hi Anya,
Sorry for the slow reply.
You should gain as much and as varied as practical work experience as possible, which should include time spent on:
- Seeing veterinary practice, both large and small animal if possible.
Melissa xx that would definitely ruin your chances of being a vet as it is important to know the complete structure of an animal for references later on
Think of it this way. I’m also a vegan for ethical purposes but it’s better to use one life in order to save more in the future.
Stay Postive yes.
It's often animals from shelters that have been euthanised... I don't see how this is an ethical issue in any way shape or form?
It's ironic. They shouldn't be doing that . Saving animals. Killing animals? No sense
I am doing veterinary course
Can you go to this university if you live in England
Hi Lauren,
Sorry for the delay in our reply. Yes, absolutely. A good percentage of our students are English and most join us straight from school. You can find out more about the admissions process here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme

@@TheDickVet Thank you for information !
Hi, I choose my GCSE options soon so I'm wondering would I be accepted if I take English, chemistry and biology for A-level or would it have to be more science based?
Hi Tom,
Yes, for a vet degree at Edinburgh, at A-level you need Chemistry, Biology and one other approved subject. English looks to be on our list of approved subjects.
If Physics has not been studied to A level, a good pass at GCSE is required.
You can find all the details here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/5-year-programme/academic-requirements
Hope that helps!
Do this vet college offers an externship opportunity to vet students from another country? I saw a data that University of Edinburgh is in the high rank of vet colleges in the world. So I hope experience their education. Actually most of our country's vet colleges focus on theory(not practical clinic).
What are the approved subjects for the entry into the UNI?
I'm from Ireland. Would I be able to study in this university?
Hi Jennifer,
Sorry for the delay in replying.
I really want to be a vet, but I have allergies with cats and some dogs. Do you guys think it's okay to be a vet with allergies??
Jasmine Porter I’m not sure, but you can always work on other animals besides cats and dogs
Hmm I I have a question do you still get excepted even if you have an allergy because I am allergic to cats and dust (some species of parrots produce dust)
Hello!
Yes, that's no problem at all. We have students who have all sorts of different allergies and accommodations can be put in place to protect you.
The Dick Vet ok thank you!
Hi Dawn,
Sorry for the late reply. We have students with a wide range of allergies and so long as we can find an accommodation to allow you to manage the allergy safely, then there would be no difference in the application procedure.
Oh wow we have the same name :D nivan never met anyone with the same name

Hi cowgirl 03,
Those look like a good start - when you get to A level, you are looking at three A levels: AAA in Chemistry, Biology and one other subject approved for entry to the veterinary degree programme. (Here is the list of approved subjects, but feel free to check with our admissions team if you are concerned - www.ed.ac.uk/studying/undergraduate/entry-requirements/ruk/approved-subjects)

Hello i’m about to choose my IGCSE subjects and i’d like to know what are the requirements to enter A Vet school or University - will Physics or maths be compulsory in the A levels?
Hi Sarah,
For our five year programme, the requirements at A level are "Three A levels: AAA in Chemistry, Biology and one other subject approved for entry to the veterinary degree programme."

I'm 12 I want to be a vet do you have to pay to go to your university?
Hi angelika,
I'm glad to hear you want to be a vet - good luck!
Thanks!
Hi Safwa,
Sorry for the delay in our reply.
Thanks!

The Dick Vet Thank you for the info, i’m pretty sure my school does, but i’m not sure. Best not to worry about it just now though.
Hi, i am currently a sophomore. And going to apply for vet school after graduate. Can you give me some advises about how to find an internship with vet? Or how to get a job in vet? Thanks really much.
Hi Pangpang,
Are you looking to get experience with a vet before applying for your undergraduate? We recommend speaking to as many vets as possible and trying to get experience with small animal vets, equine and also production animal vets if possible, as that will give you the best range of experience.
We also recommend visiting livestock farms, diary and lambing and particularly useful. Experience gained in medical laboratories is also very helpful.
We have more information here: www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/4-year-programme/non-academic-requirements
We understand that it can be difficult to get placements, but sometimes you have to keep trying as many different practices as possible and a lot of vets will be willing to give experience to someone who wants to join the profession, as they needed to get that help themselves!
I hope that helps, if you have more specific questions, then feel free to e-mail our undergraduate admissions team on vetUG@ed.ac.uk, and they are happy to offer lots more advice.
Thanks!
I’m worried about the points but I have lots of expiermce with animals would that help?
Hi Poppy and Pets,
Absolutely, we ask for a wide variety of work experience as a key part of the application process, so as long as you make the minimum academic requirements, your work with animals will be very useful.
If you're worried about any part of applying, then you are always welcome to e-mail our admissions team on vetug@ed.ac.uk and they'll be happy to help.
Thanks!

Hi Cr1 Ew,
We offer two courses, a 5 year course with direct entry and a 4 year course for those who have done a first degree. You can find the information, including the academic requirements, on our website here - www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying.
If you were looking at the 4 year course, it would require an overall GPA of 3.4 (4 point scale) in an appropriate Biological or Animal Science subject.

Im insecure about becoming a vet because im a guy is it normally a female career
Sinister Fibsomuch I don't think vet is only for girls :) anyone can do it!! I mean come on, women do men jobs as well so I think it wouldn't be weird 😄
Sinister Fibsomuch not at all. Most of the veterinary doctors in my area are males with a combination of female and male veterinary nurses
Not at all before it was a male dominated field
Sinister Fibsomuch it depends on what college you go to
why vet doctors carry stethoscope
Hi Anshul,
Among other things, we use stethoscopes to listen to animal heartbeats, trying to assess if there are any problems. They can be an excellent diagnostic tool. I hope that helps.
The Dick Vet ohh great doctor
mmmm a "vet" that ignores the cow's signs of depression. Clearly a love of animals when it suits.

Hi Amy,
The School was founded nearly 200 years ago by a man called William Dick and we are named after him.
+The Dick Vet thank you for the good luck, I guess I will have to sort something out when I'm older to get to your school as I live in England (Birmingham) :-)
I searched grades on the internet and saw you need a grade C in maths English science and 2 other subjects is that right.
