In the early 1980's, my mother tried to get a loan to buy a house for her family. She was single, divorced, and at that time on the application she had to state why she wanted a loan as a divorced woman. She also had to explain why her father wasn't helping her with the loan because he had passed away a few years prior. She had to prove she was divorced and provide paperwork along with the application. When she passed away in the 2010s, I got to see all of this paperwork and I was shocked, horrified, disgusted, and embarassed at the level of absurdity she had to go through just to get a loan to get a good house in a safe neighborhood so that I could go to a good school. While she was alive, I never told her how much I appreciated what she went through when I was little because I never knew. That is proof she was a strong woman and she made sure I grew up to be a strong and independent woman. It is now my responsibility to help to make sure that women never go back to that kind of life, where women have to prove their worth without a man or husband in their lives.
No matter what side of the political aisle you stand on, we can all agree that all women everywhere do not need the permission of any man to do anything in their lives. This is the way it should be from now on.
Thank you for reminding me of the sacrifices my single mother made. I was born in 1964 to a single mother in an Italian Catholic community. Of course, I did not realize what she went through because she just quietly and stoically carried on. I wish she was alive today so I could thank her, now that I am so much more aware. May I say, Kamala Harris' campaign bringing ALL THIS CRAP out in the open is proving to be a cathartic and healing process for me, a 60-year-old childless cat lady (by choice). I am surprised, but thankful!!!

When my violent father decided to leave, I was so happy I packed his clothes. I was in middle school and knew I was better off without the chaos his presence brought. Vance has serious daddy issues. If he’d endured the same scenes we did he’d rethink his position on no fault divorce.
Not sure therapy would help. If he had his way, his wife would be covered in black when she goes out.
Don't forget Romania's Ceauşescu. Same deal with banning birth control and abortion and encouraging large families. The pervasive poverty, however, forced children to be abandoned at understaffed and decrepit orphanages. Children locked in closets, tied to beds and just ignored caused the orphans to simply not develop. There are windows for learning to walk, to speak and to develop the social emotions--pride, shame, embarrassment and the beginnings of empathy. Because those like Vance focus on birth rather than the quality of a child's life, we are looking at someone who will not fund care for child in the system.
Once you've seen the horror of a severely neglected child, you can't unsee it. Vance is the type who could and that's madness.
I will forget because your entire essay is pointless.
Are you saying Human must have a purpose if not they should be aborted because the state has ultimately deal with it? Abortions cures child abuse?

Abortion bans have increased the death rates for women, girls, and their babies already. Even with exceptions for the life of the mother, doctors are so afraid of going to jail that they haven't performed lifesaving abortions.
Some medical professionals have moved to states where there is no ban, and more areas now have no specialists to help keep women and babies alive throughout pregnancy, which is a leading cause of death for women.
The lack of change when the death rates went up makes it really clear that these laws are about controlling women, not saving lives.
As the numbers show it's not "right to life," but "right to more death."
P.S. Homicide was already a leading cause of death for pregnant women and girls because so many fathers don't want the baby, so that number is higher, too.

As a 79 yo woman, I was a young adult during the Civil Rights era. While the act allowing woman to have their own credit and bank accounts may have been put in place in 1974, it was not in effect until much later. For example, when I was 36 and single in 1981, my father had to sign for me to be able to open my own account and that was in Los Angeles, California, not Mississippi. Good riddance to the "good old days." I'm not going back!

The falling birth rates in this country have nothing to do with selfish “childless cat ladies.” It has everything to do with economics and culture. The numbers don’t add up when it comes to having children. Having a child today is a first-ticket to poverty. Child care. Health care. Food. Housing. Clothing. Education. Even two college-educated, professional parents find it difficult to provide a middle-class life for just one child. Nevermind two high school graduates working five part-time “gig” jobs between them. Not everyone has the blessing of having a mother/mother-in-law who is able to set aside her own life and come and live with the new parents for a year and help out with cleaning, cooking, shopping, laundry, and baby care. For most families in America, Mom is still. working herself, trying to ensure that she and Grandpa don’t end up penniless, stripped of every asset, and living in a MedicAid assisted-living facility, arguing with that infamous cat over who’s going to get to eat dinner that night. Women who have children often take a career and professional “hit” to their earning potential from which they will never recover. With Conservatives and Christian Evangelicals gutting public education in order to get “vouchers” for their children to attend private, parochial schools, public education has become practically worthless. With for-profit entities “buying up” hospitals, clinics, and medical practices, and Big Pharma price-gouging the public for life-saving, essential medicines, woe betide anyone who has a child born with a chronic illness or disability. No, the numbers just don’t add up. So, couples defer having children until they have enough wealth set by that they can afford to have a family. And by then, complications during pregnancy become more common, and fertility becomes a problem - right as reproductive care and IVF are on the chopping block. Culturally, men and women are still disfavored in the workplace if they have children. Three to five paid sick days are not enough for parents to take care of the rotation of annual sickness amongst two or three (or more) children - and who then fall ill themselves. Quality, affordable housing is increasingly scarce. Couples cannot afford to have one spouse leave the workplace - how will they keep a roof over their heads when rent or mortgage payments eat up over half their disposable income? I think I have set a good example as a devoted mother. Yet, not one of my daughters or daughters-in-law is willing to have children. And I endorse their decisions. If I was still of child-bearing age, I wouldn’t choose to have a baby either. That’s just the way it is. Our society needs to profoundly overhaul our economic model for families and work-life culture and social culture until it makes sound, financial sense to have a family. And I’m not talking about a return to a pre-industrial world of child labor, or giving up on universal literacy and public education. But that’s a rant for another day. We never had children due to health issues, but I watched my brothers and sisters struggle, even with well paying jobs, to meet the expense of raising even one child. My parents often worked two jobs to keep it all together and that was in the 60s/early70s. Today is so much worse. Thank you again..

But in our culture if you are married and have your first child, the woman's mother stays with the new mother for about 6 months or longer depending on what you have agreed. With subsequent pregnancies, your mother in law stays with the mother after birth. I am African, seeing that JD's wife is of Indian heritage, they may have similar practices.

@@tselengbotlhole750 i totally agree. I from a similar culture. The point is to not shame those who can't. My mum was caring for my dad when she was blessed with her first grand child. My dad passed a few years later. It was her duty at the time to care for her husband not travel to another city. The key here is this line... "the WHOLE purpose of a menopausal woman"....Life is not straight forward. Some women still need to work. Others have kids under 18 who need there care, others have kids who become pregnant at the same time and of course they can't help in both households.

The husband has to pay restitution for the mother for being present either for 6 to 1 year. The husband basically has to be financially stable and has to prepare to financially support both mother in law, wife and baby during those critical months.
