Funny and Favorite Moments with Disney Characters - Ep 75 Confessions of a Theme Park Worker

  • I worked with a lot of characters at Walt Disney World. Here are more of my favorites. Who was crazy? Who had the best outfits? Who was best with the kids? The hardest to get photos of? Who saw me collapse? And which ones were the most stressful to work with? Get ready for a bunch of characters, a number of stories, and a lot of photos.
    A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a PhotoPass photographer at Walt Disney World and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and train robber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at Silver Dollar City. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lots of stories to tell. Here is some of them...

    My daughter is special needs and people in costumes use to scare her. Other theme parks we had gone to, would keep coming up to her even when she was freaking out, until I would get angry. Disneyland was the first place we actually got a character picture with Mickey. He saw she was scared and stayed back waving. He took his time and got down to her level. She actually went up for a handshake. To some this isn't a big deal, but for us this was huge. And a photopass photographer caught the entire thing. Still my favorite memory at Disneyland, and my favorite pictures.

    Chip once made my daughter go crazy and we couldn't figure out for the life of us what was going on. We were at Disneyland trying to get our picture for the Carnation Plaza Minnie Breakfast before going into eat. My daughter wasn't wanting to pose for the camera, so we were trying to get her to cooperate and then all of a sudden she'd start freaking out and pointing at something (she was about 18 months old). We'd look and there was nothing there...we thought it was a bird or another animal...this went on for a couple of minutes before Chip finally poked his head out of a hidden door while we were looking. Even the photo pass person had no clue what was going on until Chip came out and fessed up! It was SO funny!!!
    Love Chip and Dale!

    When I went to Disney for my first time I was 7 and I met Mushu and Mulan shortly after. My 2 brothers and my 1 sister were all afraid of Mushu thinking he was mean (I was the only one that actually saw the movie at the time). Then when mulan came out, my sister hid behind mulan and told her that Mushu was trying to burn them with fire! Mulan had to explain that Mushu was not mean. Then We all sat on the floor as Mulan told us all of her martial arts stories. And as Mushu was trying to interrupt Mulan. I can’t wait to go back this summer!!

    That explains all the photo pass people I saw with marks over their arms. . .
    THAT'S where Sorcerer Mickey is. I've always wanted to get a photo with him.
    And what a way to discover an illness. Mickey tried to help you!
    I have a Falfellow photo! He did try to steal my hat. XD
    *Captain Jack alert!!*
    I also found Captain Jack hiding behind a bush when I got off the Pirates ride. XD he's a super fun character to mess around with. He tried to sell me on being a pirate. I informed him I already was. (And showed him all my Pirate pins) XD
    I spent a good 5 minutes able to speak with him alone because he was so hidden, no one else knew he was there.

    Yes! I adore Chip and Dale. I always have to get at least one picture with them when I visit the parks. (I even had one day where I visited them at all four parks; that was a fun day!) There have been a few times where I've asked Dale if I could have a picture with just Chip (because he's my favorite Disney character), and Dale happily obliged. One time he used this "free time" to chase after a nearby bird. Another time Dale stepped aside only to photobomb us a moment later. I think the chipmunks are so underrated.

    One of my favorite charector interactions was during the cp Hawaian luau. Stitch was meeting us for pictures. He walked off to the side, grabbed some streamers and got down on one knee proposing. Then he wrapped me in the streamers. I was laughing so hard.
    My other favorite interaction was when Goofy got ready in the Anadapur breakroom for a photoshoot with the Jonas Brothers. He was so fun to interact with.

    One of my favorite interactions with my favorite character Stitch was at Hollywood studios. We went to go get his autograph and he saw on my pin lanyard a couple of stitch pins and he grabbed a lanyard and dragged me and pointed at the pin and to him and I said yes stitch you're my favorite character and he gave me the biggest hug.

    My first time going to Disney World we were walking in the morning going to space mountain, and stitch was watching the giant bag full of smaller cotton candy bags. He picked up the whole bag and tried taking it and shaking no when the cast member asked for them back. It was a really great start to the trip!!!!! Stitch was also great in Hawaii, I was on the lazy river and all of a sudden the bushes around the bend gets pulled open and stitch is looking down and waving and laughing. It was great!!!

    One of my favorite character interactions was when I took my nephew for his 2nd birthday. (He just turned 20) It was a hot day, he was tired and we got in line to meet Minnie and Mickey. When he saw Minnie he immediately went to her and she got down on her knees and gave him a hug. He climbed up in her lap and fell asleep and she held him for about 5 min. The person with her kept trying to get my sister to take my nephew because of Minnie's line, but Minnie would not let her take him. She just held him and rocked him. It was so sweet. ❤❤❤

    Minnie was the one who got me to not be afraid of characters with masks during a breakfast when I was 7 (though I did hide from Gaston during the breakfast too) but the best interactions I had were Chip and Dale stealing my camera (Dale actually managed to get a picture of Chip) and Stitch trying to steal my shirt that had him on it.

    Pretty sure i've mentioned my interaction with Chip and Dale last year that left me and my mother who was attempting to take photos, in hysterics 😀 they definitely took their shot at me when they saw my hair tied up in a shiny bobbon 😀. On that trip we also had a funny time with the queen of hearts, she shooed the kids in front of us in line away and went for a wander around wonderland, came back and carried on as if nothing happened. It was bizarre 😂 though i realise now she is the queen and can do what she likes 😛 still makes me laugh.

    I LOVED the Power Rangers as a kid and I remember I wasn't able to get a picture/autograph with them because of their short meet and greet sessions. I was upset I didn't get to meet them but it was still super cool to see them briefly from afar.

    The sorcerer meet and green moved around to another soundstage are after the animation pavilion closed and turned into the Star Wars launch bay. I had a fun experience with him there. the area is all theme sorcerer apprentice theme. I had my notebook out that was also a sketchbook of mine for him to autograph. Some of my pages flip through on the drawings I made and he loved my sketches. I am an artist and had some concepts of mine for Disney one day and told him one of my characters was going on adventures with him. Mickey approved that idea! XD It made my moment of a meet and greet.
    Also another fun one and it was when I was at the garden grill with my family. I was in a middle of a drawing and I think Chip up and saw my drawing and waved Dale over to see. They were so fascinated at my drawing. I had to do show them the rest of my drawings.

    I had the good fortune of being pals with Chip and Dale back in fall of 2015 in my college program and they were quite a blast. Although when I worked Thanksgiving with the munks, that was probably the worst day ever....a table of 54 at the Swan and vom on the floor. But one of Chip and Dale's favorite thing to do in pictures when I knew them was to pretend to poke their paws on kids who had spiky hair. And with Pooh and Tigger at thotful... they really liked to pretend to jump into the storybook and make a large thud. hehehehe

    One of my favorite interactions with a character was with Dale at Disneyland. As my family and I were waiting to get into Tomorrow land (they let us in a few minutes early, but no lands were open yet) next to the Plaza Inn and Dale was in there behind a small fence picking leaves off a bush and throwing them at me. It was totally random but it was one of my favorite moments from our trip!

    When I met my favorites,Lilo and Stitch, I gave them a drawing I made of Lilo kissing Stitch. They then grabbed my hands and 1 of my brothers held Lilos hand and the other held stitch’s.We went to the castle together and then lilo and stitch thought my parents were the aliens that tried to capture Stitch,so we all started running! After that, we got a picture and got a signature. Lilo wrote her name and Stitch wrote his.♥️

      Mary Poppins was a lot of fun, but Photopass wasn't allowed to shoot photos of her due to copyright/ ownership issues between Disney and the PL Travers estate.

    I'd have to say, two of my favorite character memories are from Stitch and Goofy. Once, my Dad and I were waiting for the rest of my family (I think we were in Tomorrowland), I saw Stitch walk past and yelled out to him, just expecting him wave and keep going. Only to have Stitch wave, walk over and sit on my lap (I have to use a wheelchair in the parks, because I physically can't handle all the walking.) My other favorite memory, was in Animal Kingdom when Goofy accidentally bonked me on the head with his nose, and kissed my hand to say sorry!

    • @SirWillow

      We rarely got to shoot Alice or any of the other Wonderland characters, probably due to copyright/ ownership issues with the original books.

    • @sebastianpadkins
      @sebastianpadkins 7 лет назад +2

      I'm pretty sure Alice is in the public domain as the book is over 100 years old. But it is "curious" you didn't get to shoot them. I think those characters have a much larger presence out in Disneyland

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 лет назад +2

      I think the books are as well. But if I remember right (and I could be muffing the details some here) when Disney made the movie it was with an agreement with either Lewis Carrol or the estate, and because that agreement still applies, we couldn't do it. it may have been something like that. What I remember is that we generally weren't allowed to shoot Alice. Even one time when the Mad Hatter made an appearance in Toontown for a day we weren't allowed to shoot him, even though we were shooting the other 2 characters in the rooms. Sometimes Disney's licensing deals can be complicated.

      if they recognize it or have it pointed out to them, yes, they do! They love it! It was something that was just barely beginning when I left Disney, but we would occasionally see something like it then. it's neat how it's caught on the last few years. You bet they'll react and enjoy things like that.

    Love the character videos! You're definitely right about Chip and Dale liking to steal hats when you meet them. They stole mine the last time I met them at Animal Kingdom (luckily I got it back though) lol. As a guest, when I can sense that I'm gonna be in a "hug and shove" type situation for a meet and greet, I get a little miffed, because that means I'm not gonna get the quality interaction experience that I'm looking for. I understand that sometimes it's just unavoidable, but as a big character fan, it puts a bit of a damper on the experience for me...

      You welcome!
      Since I have your attention (☺) awhile ago I suggested a vid idea and don't know if you saw it so am going to restate it here:
      You did a vid on hurricane prep at WDW. Could you also eventually do a vid on how parks (WDW and others) deal with more sudden emergencies such as rides breaking down and fires (Both have some vids on RUclips) along with (basically as suggested above) major medical emergencies. Also in the same or a diff vid sudden natural disasters such as earthquake and tornado procedures.
      Sorry for that being a bit ramblely, hope you get the jist of it.

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 лет назад

      Thanks. I did see that. it's a hard video to do because things like that happen so rarely. In all honesty, I've never deal with anything like them at Disney or Busch, and only had one storm at SDC where we had to go to our emergency shelters. Only know of one time where there was a major medical emergency at any of the parks (again at SDC) and I told that story in one of my videos, and never had anything other than a minor mechanical malfunction. No fires. so it's very hard to do a video on something that I've never actually had happen.
      Basically the procedure for almost all of those is keep guests safe and calm, and out of the way and let the people trained for them deal with it. :-)
      (Also- Florida and Missouri don't have earthquake procedures since they don't happen in either state. Tornados it's simply knowing where the closest storm shelter is and if an alert is given then help direct guests to those locations)

    Did you ever have children scream, cry, and/or run away when confronted by one of the Disney villains? Or didn't Disney villains interact with guests? I guess no one wanted their autographs ... or did they?

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 лет назад +6

      I saw kids do that with a variety of characters- didn't really matter if they were villains or not. lol Not that many of the villains come out and do meet and greets, but the ones that do are very popular. It's actually one of the things that makes the Not So Scary party for Halloween so popular, is that a number of villains come out for meets and greets that often aren't out otherwise.

    I'm planning a trip to DisneyWorld but my kids will be teens by the time we go. I figured we shouldn't bother with meet and greets but now I'm definitely going to suggest doing them.
    By the way, I am so happy I came across your channel. It's been tough lately but your videos make me feel so happy. :)

    • @SirWillow

      Teens a lot of times could be some of the most fun at meet and greets, as long as they weren't stuck on being "cool". My kids had an absolute blast with them when they were teens.

    Hey Sir Willow, I've met with Mike and Sully and I know Mike was more of the awkward one. I saw some kids try to hold his hand or touch him and he would move away. Was Mike an animatronic or was it an actual costume? Thanks :)

    • @SirWillow

      neither one. Mike is a real monster. Though I think after the experience with Boo he's still a bit nervous about contact with humans.

    does the time of year dictate what characters are available? for example the "slow" season have less characters around? (am I making sense?)

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 лет назад +6

      Generally it doesn't. It might make the park hours shorter, but most of the character meet and greet locations are year round. Off the top of my head I can't recall any that were seasonal when I was there.
      Keep in mind, Walt Disney World really doesn't have a "slow" season anymore. The crowds are lighter certain times of the year, but there are ALWAYS crowds there. :-)

    • @SirWillow

      When we used to have Toontown and there were 3 characters in one room you would occasionally get someone that would skip one or two of the characters. It was rare, but it did happen. it wasn't so much that the didn't exist, it just wasn't who they wanted to meet.

    Hey, I’ve got 2 questions with similar scenarios I’m going to Disney in the summer and I don’t know what park we will go most, we have a 13, 16, 11, 10, And a 8 year old. Next is the same we got a 11, 10, 9, 5, 1, and a week old.What park is best to go for each scenario?

    • @emperorkoi
      @emperorkoi 6 лет назад

      *few weeks old

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  6 лет назад

      It all depends on the people and what they do and don't like to do and what their interests are. Some kids love Animal Kingdom, some don't. Some love Magic Kingdom, some don't. Some love meeting characters, others don't. Best thing to do is look over a list of what rides, shows, and attractions are at each park and decide from there.

      People have tried to get into the utilidors over the years, most have been caught. if you're caught you get thrown out of the parks, and can get banned. For your other question, your answer/ non-answer is at ruclips.net/video/6m3n1lW44Gs/видео.html :-)

    Excellent video keep up the good work. I've been working on my 1/8 scale railroad lately. Working on my equipment Walt Disney himself had a 1/8 scale railroad at his home in California called the Carolina and Pacific. He had a steam locomotive just one but he had a few of them but did not have any gasoline powered locomotives just Steam. If I ever come across any train items I might send you one or two maybe someday down the road. Check out the channel I'm going to be posting an update video maybe tonight maybe
