    You Tube popped this up as a suggested video. Almost didn't click on it, but glad I did. A nice switching layout, sort of ala' Lance Mindheim, and you incorporated many operational features (switch locks, etc.) discussed in on-line forums. I grew up in northwest Iowa and one of my sister lived briefly in Council Bluffs.

    • @emillerz

      Thanks for watching and thank you for the note! I have been trying hard to work in a lot of Lance Mindheim concepts in the last couple of years, so I am happy to hear those are showing through. I grew up in the Bellevue/South Omaha area and really enjoy modeling this location!

    Very nice layout you have. The IHC locomotive you redid looks really good. The trees your daughters did are very good looking. It's always fun to involve your family in your hobby. It looks like you are getting everything in order and progressing nicely. The way you do your running sessions is great. Having the locked switches and industries having the conductor have keys and have to actually go through the real steps. 1 to 1 scale ops. is what you called it. I like that. Roy Smith mentioned you in his latest video so I came over to see what you are all about. I have subscribed and look forward to following your model railroad layout journey. 👍

    Eric,
    I like the thought process you have given towards operation on the layout. You are commended for inviting your kids to participate in the hobby; scenery anyway. Looking forward to more videos.

      Thank you! I really enjoy adding as much realistic operations as possible. It's fun to let the kids help where they can. They also like to run the trains and the ProtoThrottle is really easy for them to use.

    As to not having ops sessions in a while. You probably mean a longer formal session with guests. I try to get in a couple of quick 30 minute sessions a week. Maybe switch 1 Industry with a car or 2 like your other video. Thanks again for sharing your time and knowledge. Awesome stuff!!!

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  4 года назад

      Thanks for the comment! Yes, you are correct, that's exactly what I mean. Good point, that even minor op sessions are important to do, even though holding formal op sessions may get sporadic. That's what I like about this size of a layout, it is very easy to just go down and operate whenever I have a few minutes! Thanks again for stopping by!

    I like your manually activated grade crossing. I have a section on my layout that was protected by crossing lights but they were manually activated by a guard tower at the intersection. That would make for a fun operational addition to have to stop and activate the lights instead of automating them.

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  4 года назад

      Thank you! It seems like some things take forever as I started planning this scene 11 months ago. That's a good idea to do a video on JMRI. I have to make some adjustments there, so I will be sure to record a video on how that works. What worked well for me is just playing around with the different features and continuing to build switch lists until I got the rhythm that I was looking for with cars being changed out for each op session.

    G’day Eric. Great to see the progress on the layout. Very nice work on the residential area. Nice use of locks and keys to slow the pace of the op. session. Love your yard diagrams on the fascia - compact, clear, and very nicely presented - what’s the secret there? Thanks for posting and all the best for the new year. Regards, Brad.

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  4 года назад

      Thanks, Brad! The track diagrams on the fascia are pretty easy to create. I just make them in PowerPoint using text boxes and drawing lines. They are about 5X7 inches. Then I print them out, two to a page, cut them out, and laminate them. This makes it easy to change out on the layout in case something changes like the customer or if the tracks are adjusted in the industry.

    I'm both subbed and hooked. I like your layout setup and operations. I think I've seen the padlock idea somewhere else and it just slows things down a bit - we know there would brakes going on and coming off on freight cars plus loco brake checks too.

    Love all the detail work you've put into this. Are you going to do a video of a session with all your SPSF equipment on show? I've seen shots of your custom painted rolling stock and curious to see it in operation.

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  4 года назад

      Thanks for the comment! One thing I enjoy about modeling a smaller layout is having more time to spend on detail. I don't have a whole lot of SPSF stuff left after I reduced the size of the layout a few years ago, but I can definitely plan to do a video on it soon!

    • @FelineSublime
      @FelineSublime 4 года назад +1

      @@emillerz You had a number of custom decals made for your rolling stock, didn't you? I have five of the Roundhouse SPSF 50' boxcars and somehow ended up with two of their cabooses, but they're not a model ATSF or SP ever used.

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  4 года назад

      @@FelineSublime Yes, I had a ton of custom decals made that were printed by Highball Graphics. I ended up selling a lot of my custom cars because I don't need all of them on my smaller layout. I only have about 100 total freight cars now, which is plenty for the 10 customers that I have on the industrial spur. Highball Graphics still offers a couple of my decal sets that I created for general use, FL-30, 31, and 32:

    How did you make the yellow "brake chock" . Can you post a bigger picture of it?

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  4 года назад

      Thanks for watching and for your comment! I just use yellow electrical connectors for the brake chocks that look like this:
      www.amazon.com/Baomain-disconnects-Insulated-Connector-Electrical/dp/B01G4QH5H4/ref=asc_df_B01G4QH5H4/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312172921394&hvpos=1o6&hvnetw=g&hvrand=635426300177232128&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9028758&hvtargid=pla-761100386832&psc=1
      I just bend the metal part back so that it sits on the rail and provides a stop for the first wheel of the first car. Let me know if that helps!

    Really enjoyed this second watched video of your's. Looking forward to doing some binge watching to get caught up on all you've done. What you have here is somewhat in my game plan to come. I've been in N scale my entire life and in the past year I've been growing interest in HO.. I don't want to completely kick N to the curb so, I think a shelf layout in HO will make both happen. As "space" is always the issue.. especially trying to do both scales and be happy precise planning of a simple design as you've done seems to really fit the ticket. I think I'll learn a lot of insight from your channel and the easy way you describe what's happening. Good Stuff. Thanks for sharing. Tom

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  4 года назад

      Thanks again for watching and good luck with planning your HO shelf layout. I think you'll be surprised at how much operations you can put into a small layout. And I may be biased, but I think HO is the best scale for operations. :)

    Hi Eric, really nice layout. I found you by a you tube suggested video. I subscribed and started from the beginning and noticed that in 2013 that you were using digitrax and in this video you had nce. Can you tell me what made you change and can you compare your experience with both? Some quick pros and cons would be great. Thanks for sharing.

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  4 года назад

      Thanks for watching and for your comment! I wrote a blog and then later an article for Model Railroad Hobbyist on my Digitrax to NCE conversion - I will link them below. What really irritated me with Digitrax is that I could not get one of my radio throttles to work with my Duplex receiver and Digitrax "customer service" was super mean to me about it when I was trying to get it fixed (I ended up sending them the throttle to get fixed twice and it still didn't work). When I converted to NCE, I realized there were a lot of bugs that the Digitrax Duplex system had, which I just thought I had to live with for a model railroad DCC system. The NCE system is so much more reliable than Digitrax - no more mysterious shorts and random failures when running an op session. Programming is also much easier and I don't even have a programming track anymore since I just do all my programming on the main track. I am so happy that I switched!

    Hey Eric - Scenery looks great! Really nice residential row and park. When you get to the cornfield area, do you plan on "weeding up" the abandoned trackage? That would look totally awesome! Also, for your employee timetable, what font did you use for the table portion with the station names and mileage between points? It's spot on and really looks good! Keep up the great work! John

    • @emillerz
      @emillerz  4 года назад +1

      Thanks, I appreciate your comments! Yes, I do plan to add some weeds to the abandoned track on either side of the bridge. For the timetable, I based it on a Union Pacific timetable from the late 1980s. I believe it's just simple Arial font - I'll double check that.
