Love these shows, their extraordinary places, and finds. Collective expert interpretation by renowned experienced persons in a variety of associated specialties with a large bit of entertaining personalities . But I hope the new Time Team will avoid the past mistake of increasingly demeaning female archaeologists, staff and the viewers with close up zooms of decolletage and focus on the remarkable unfolding archeology. I see the much loved, late Mick Aston's point in resigning when it strayed in the past from the point of the show. Delighted there is more Time Team to come!
Season 19 - Episode 1, "Dig By Wire". This is the first episode to include Mary-Ann Ochota, one of the main reasons Mick Aston quit. In spite of her being a trained anthropologist and archaeologist, I guess Mick saw her more as eye candy for the show. And honestly, I can't say why she was there if it wasn't for that purpose, since her role seemed to very heavily overlap Tony's. But in spite of Mick's disapproval of her addition, I don't think it's fair to blame her for the demise of the show. She did have an appropriate degree, and had been an anthropological TV presenter in the past. Although even if eye candy was her role, it's difficult to fault BBC too much. After 20 years, ratings had dropped off considerably. Nothing lasts forever, and all in all, 20 years is a remarkable run for any show, let alone one about archaeology! It's a shame Stewart was gone... of all the team members he seemed to be the one most frequently correct. :-)
I actually agree with you. However, I wonder why a clever woman would allow herself to be reduced to eye candy and how producers can be naive enough to believe that eye candy could save the show. Maybe it would have been wiser to allow the show to "age gracefully" and give it a proper ending without having to antagonize thr Prof., whom I admire greatly.
Miss Ochota was blamed for the demise of the show. Mick Aston left because the producers had "dumbed down" the show. (The producers cut out the scientific stuff in order to attract a larger audience. In hindsight; they cut out the part that made the show so interesting) Mick Aston was very very angry about that decision. "I never earned a penny with it; but I put my heart and soul into the show"; he said. He died soon after. So did the show. I'm not sure if miss Ochota was wrongfully blamed for killing the show. But I am sure that Mick Aston left some pretty big shoes to fill.
Mary Ann got a raw deal, in my opinion. She came into a team already well settled and was seen as a usurper of sorts. In reality Tony was getting older and could not run from trench to trench the way he used to so having two presenters was a good thing as far as that went. Tony came in as an actor and was much more comfortable with public speaking. He also knew several members of the team and got on well with them prior to the show. Alex got some heat to a lesser degree, having trouble living up to taking Stewart's place. He had spent at lest 6 years previously doing live-in experimental archaeology in the Farm Series. Therefore, he had not had the experience of a much older and well practiced Stewart.

It was definitely an easily defensible site in its heyday. A narrow ridge like that would effectively force attackers into single file, and it provides an excellent vantage point for advanced warning of seaborne raiders. The problem of fresh water was obviously solved by using those cisterns to hold rain water. Given the terrain, and availability of resources it's an excellent place for a settlement.
This time they needed a geologist with a specialty in seeing back in time to earlier times of the site. Looks to me that the island was a peninsula not too long ago, say 500 to 1000 years ago.
Anyone else ever notice that at no time do any of these people ever think that maybe just once someone might hang out in a place for a while because they like the view?

Where you have trade by sea, you have raiders and pirates. thus the serious need for defences. this place would represent a concentration of wealth and thus be a tempting target.
If the line comes loose on one side, they're likely to grab it on their way down, which could easily result in them slamming into the cliff. That's just my guess. Having guessed it, I'd wear a helmet on my way across too.
Could it be that it was not sacred but they kept sacred objects at "home" or in certion areas like we do today? Or just a part was sacred? My toughts are that the "island" that you found out was a Peninsula was just easy to defend. Did you check the sea level at the time you where estimating the age of the old setilment? Would it be a some kind of fortification on the sea way to diffend the entrance to a beach? trade maybe was something done in the area not just violent encounters.

The guy actually had to physically travel to the mainland, JUST to look at what the other guy found, before he could OK a couple of dig sites? Seriously? That's time very badly spent. Yes an no, if you have the smaller fort on the main land. Then fall back across a narrow ridge to a fall back location, you force the Attackers to a narrow path lowering the Attackers assault. With Sword, Slingshot, Arrows, club, an Axe, you stand a Chance.. the "island" in my opinion is similar to a Castle set up for the upper ranks and leader, and the main land side is where you house the Lower ranks an Troop. With a Cliff at your back you will fight Harder.

This show would do well on “the history channel” in the states... history channel is owned by Disney and Disney loves nothing more that overly dramatized reality shows with fake experts who are really lifelong paid actor (like tony is) who just read from a script but really have no clue what they are talking about or what they are doing or what anyone else is doing/saying.... and I call bs on “do it in three days” most of what they do would take atleast a week to just set up and some of the trenches they do on some episodes would take atleast a week to on their own (if done properly and not just going at it with a backhoe or tractor

It was. Mick was unhappy with the diminishing of the roles of the archaeologist with the addition of Mary-Ann Ochota. The familiar faces of surveyor Stewart Ainsworth, small finds specialist Helen Geake and illustrator Victor Ambrus are missing as well. The show changed at this time and I started watching it less.
Season 19 - Episode 1, "Dig By Wire". He was actually in some of the shows from this season. This is the first episode to include Mary-Ann Ochota, one of the main reasons Mick Aston quit. In spite of her being a trained anthropologist and archaeologist, I guess Mick saw her more as eye candy for the show. And honestly, I can't say why she was there if it wasn't for eye candy, since her role seemed to heavily overlap Tony's. Although even if eye candy was her role, it's difficult to fault BBC too much. After 20 years, ratings had dropped off considerably. Nothing lasts forever, and all in all, 20 years is a remarkable run for any show, let alone one about archaeology!
It's a shame Stewart was gone at the end... of all the team members he seemed to be the one most frequently correct. :-)

Force of the props could easily upset the dig sites and a lot of pilots don't care to fly low on windy, craggy coasts.

@@TOMAS-lh4er Sadly that would mean the chopper could be out of commission for weeks to months & that's quite a bill to ground someone's means to making money. They seemingly didnt camp on site so they would have needed the zip line regardless. And yes, great show...LOVE History!!

The guy actually had to physically travel to the mainland, JUST to look at what the other guy found, before he could OK a couple of dig sites? Seriously? That's time very badly spent. Dinosaurs should be excavated, not in charge of excavations. Sorry for the negative comment, but good lord...I really hate to see willful disregard for the value of technology.

Denpachii Helicopters are expensive, zip lines and medical care for the team is much cheaper!
@@reginaromsey Sixty odd feet to the rocks and sea below if the line fails, no need for medical care. When time is short, take advantage of your best options. I think that the people in charge are just cheap and will try to pinch a pound out of every penny.

In Dutch a holm is a island thats only partly surounded by water since an isle is an eye in the old tongue. Gate or gaat is a word for going or passing before it bacme a portal in some sort. The island probly was connected to the mainland. Im going to enjoy watching this.
Ha I've added context on wikipedia.. it says gateholm means goat island. A gate could be a passageway or street.. a holm isn't even an island but a risen peninsula..so euhm?!

They had trained climbers walk over at low tide and scale the side of the island to erect the post for the zip lines.

The curve denotes phallus. Pestles aren't bowed, it would weaken the tool. There also seemingly was no mortar shards found nearby otherwse they would have shared that.

It doesn't seem like a good spot for a Fort though! Your back is against the ocean with a cliff behind you. Very poor tactical position- same mistake that killed General Custer.
You have to remember that back then they didn't have armaments that could reach that high up from the sea at the time the fort was built, so all they really had to worry about was fending off attacks from the land side.

Yes an no, if you have the smaller fort on the main land. Then fall back across a narrow ridge to a fall back location, you force the Attackers to a narrow path lowering the Attackers assault. With Sword, Slingshot, Arrows, club, an Axe, you stand a Chance.. the "island" in my opinion is similar to a Castle set up for the upper ranks and leader, and the main land side is where you house the Lower ranks an Troop.
With a Cliff at your back you will fight Harder.

This show would do well on “the history channel” in the states... history channel is owned by Disney and Disney loves nothing more that overly dramatized reality shows with fake experts who are really lifelong paid actor (like tony is) who just read from a script but really have no clue what they are talking about or what they are doing or what anyone else is doing/saying.... and I call bs on “do it in three days” most of what they do would take atleast a week to just set up and some of the trenches they do on some episodes would take atleast a week to on their own (if done properly and not just going at it with a backhoe or tractor
