Back in the '80s, in the Army, I 'owned' an XM816 Wrecker.
When the video started, I was looking at something else...until I heard that NHC-250 cranking! OH MY! Flashbacks!
Kudos on splitting the transfer case...I learned that little trick towing vehicles up, down, and around the little streets in German 'dorfs.'
I'm thinking that my old wrecker would have pulled that truck right out on to the road (in the first pull you did) simply because of the weight of the rotator over the back wheels.
OTOH, it HATED mud like that! BECAUSE of the weight of that rotator assembly, if I got into mud like that, I was done...recovering myself!

We are On the Road Again, this time in the Mighty 5 ton to recover a drill rig in the Virgin Oil Fields. This area turns to soup with just a little rain, but we have had months of rain. Can the big Off Road 5 Ton get the job done? Am I going to have to call in the Big Boys from SG3 Towing or Get Hooked to bring a real Wrecker to help get this job knocked out? Jump in and let's see if the 5 ton can make it happen! Thanks to Freedom Ropes for the monster ropes and soft shackles for the 5 ton! for Watching Casey

The 5 ton is good for off highway work but cannot get into tight places or handle soft blow sand or deep mud. It has a place, but it couldn't compete "Off Road" against a good high floatation, tight turning, heavy wrecker with multiple high quality winches and boom.
Dragging that drill rig onto the wet shoulder of the road was a rookie mistake.

That ground is probably getting to the point where even a pickup with good mud tires would sink and get hung up on virgin ground ( never mind trying to follow those tracks ! ) . Oilfield up here gets into all sorts of mess come spring until they just have to shut it down, then rains during the summer create all sorts of fun all over again and why winter time allows for getting things done on frozen ground as long as they blade off the snow so the ground will freeze properly. Cats and large tractors with big singles and skidder type chains all the way around and big winches dragging trucks around, got to get that oil out of the ground !. Not that it would have prevented this stuck but I noticed those were single chains on the drives, that is asking for a stuck on anything soft.

You might consider adding some weight on your truck for traction. Those 5 toners are brutal, they can take it. I would recommend a two thousand gallon water tank. That would add about 18k lbs. Don’t let the 5 ton designation fool you. That is for bouncing a load across country off road. These trucks can handle a lot more weight than people realize. If you rated it like a commercial truck it would probably have a gross weight of close to 60,000 lbs meaning you could probably carry 35,000 lbs.

If I remember right that truck is spec'd for 10tons cargo capacity on road by the military though it might be different with super singles as there are only four tires in the rear instead of 8 (each tire has a maximum weight rating). The 5ton rating is for "cross country payload" and most tactical trucks have aprox double that for "on road" i.e. 2 1/2 ton=5ton on road and 5ton=10ton on road.
