With today's unannounced raise in price of $5 for the base model Sabre, CCU chaining has been a hot topic. I wasn't bothered since the Sabre being a popular Warbond CCU over the past few years meant that I had a lot of X _to_ Sabre CCUs and only _one_ Sabre to X CCU. It was standard, and already worth less than the gap between the two ships. And easy melt and another $20 in my Store Credit.
Yeah smartest purchase is just 1 or 2 or so long chains that can really be whatever you want between 400-700 “dollar” ships for around $200-400 real dollars . (And the starter with normie insurance ) (you can keep the chain at whatever 100-200 dollar ship you want until you see what the game is.)
Chaining trick: if an expensive (or not always available) ship has a warbond sale, you can buy an upgrade from the next most expensive ship and lock in the price, especially if the next available ship is already in-game and unlikely to go up in price. If you are patient you can combine upgrades from several sales and the savings really add up.
I'm new to the whole ccu game, been just clicking upgrade lol. I've heard the statement "unlikely to go up in price" like you said before; if you purchased the upgrade for let's say $5 and the price of that module goes up (potentially the terrapin for example) what does that cause? I'm a bit confused on what happens if the price goes up
@@tman41291 If you buy a ship and it's value is $140 then you can upgrade to a $180 ship for $40. However if that $140 ship goes up in price to lets say $170 then you can upgrade to that $180 ship for only $10. I.e if a ship you bought goes up in price then you can upgrade to a new ship with that new price.
@@tman41291 Your upgrade still works regardless if you used it yet. But the ship that changes price obviously has that increased price. If the first ship is increased in price you have lost money on the upgrade, but if the second ship increases then you have gained value on the upgrade. Example You bought a caterpillar to hull c upgrade for $20 (330-350) the hull c releases and is now $500. You can now apply the caterpillar upgrade for your hull c. Now you have a $500 ship for $150 off on the opposite side. You bought a hull c to reclaimer upgrade for $50 before release of hull c. Hull c releases at $500. You now have a $500 valued ship upgrade that leads to a $400 ship.
I, theoretically, CCU chain path to a pretty cheap Polaris... But I need to walk inside it this IAE to see if I'm going to pull the trigger. Its kind of split between that and a BMM as my "big ship" that will likely be almost always parked at or near my main land base for extra facilities/medical. Chaining and price speculation is a whole second game in and of itself, and a potentially dangerous one for your wallet. I hit that tophat far sooner than I wanted, and have steadily decreased spending on this game as time went on.
@@davewills6121i have everything to go right now, just need to get a ccu from the ironclad assault to the hull d. not gonna apply anything yet, but i will have all the pieces come MISC day at IAE. think it will end up being 190 for it when it is done.
Being a old but new player to Star Citizen, your guides really help. I never knew you could chain war bonds to get a bigger deal, mind blowing. Thank you for the tips!
When i bought my ships i did chaining by accident simply by buying one ship after the other but i wont spend any more money on this game until my ships are actually finally flyable ^^
Why not just buy the CCU, lock in the price and fly whats current and imminent, instead of living off sloppy loaners and twiddling your thumBs for the next 4/8 yrs?.
I didn't quite understand chaining, but now I do. Also - Warbonds! Thank you for the clarification. I'll be picking up a shiny new ship during this event.
I've thought about chaining upgrades together to get bigger ships, but I do still want in-game goals to set for myself. We'll have to see how costly the taxes and fees systems will be (including insurance) before we can really tell if LTI token chains will actually be worth it.
CCU chains are a trap. I started one to get a cheaper Carrack and ended up getting more and more CCUs to try to maximize the value. Now I have a Perseus, Carrack, Polaris, Starliner, 600i, and MSR. There is a reason they let people “save” money with warbond CCUs.
This is a fantastic coverage on so many details for IAE and I'm glad it's something easy to share with new backers who are interested in the game. I think the only thing you could have added in the Upgrades section where you did state ships can only be upgraded to more expensive ships and not ones of lesser value but left out ships cannot be "upgraded" to another ship of equal value. After the $0 CCUs went away and the community was against something like $5 for a CCU between 2 ships of equal value, there are ships which are matched in price which would cause an issue should a new backer get one and want to CCU it to the other. At that point they'd need to melt the entire thing and use store credit to buy it.
Great advice. I always wait to the last couple days before buying, chaining ccu’s is always a nightmare though. They should add an option to the store page that allows you chain multiple ccu upgrades to your cart in one go. Adding to cart one by one sucks.
Although I didn't start working on it when it was first concepted, I was able to CCU Chain my way up to a Carrack for a couple hundred dollars less than it's current retail price. Since I'm not a very good pilot, I'd say that's my greatest Star Citizen accomplishment.
I have never really been able to pin down a ship to purchase where chaining would work. I slowly upgrade to what I wanted. I second your idea of sleeping on any purchase unless you've already slept on it in the run up to IAE and know where that purchase/ upgrade will end up in your fleet and why it makes sense. Even then, be aware that CIG has drastically changed a few ships I have had over the years that made them worse for my uses, I never had the Corsair, causing me to melt or upgrade to what better fits my play style. I am still holding out hope that the ship in my game package gets some rework love to fix the flaws it has now.
First, there is an app for chaining: "Star Citizen CCU Game" (aptly named). You can use this to build (based on the criteria you pick such as least new money, etc.) a chain of purchases to the ship desired. It will then populate your cart with those purchases (if you choose) which you can execute (if you want to). It will take everything of yours into consideration (i.e., store credit, other CCUs you may own, etc.). Second, the biggest problem with getting from here to there is whether there are a lot of ships on sale at the time (aka Invictus/IAE) or not. If you try to use it between events, while it might find you something useful, it usually indicates a direct buy. It always saves me money (and dissuades me from buying something outright). It takes some getting used to, but it has been invaluable if I see a ship that matches my game style that will enhance my life "in the Verse." That and it guarantees an LTI (per my normal choice).
I've used CCU Chaining from LTI tokens for all my ships, although the ship I chained to from my game package only has 10 year insurance. But I've also almost finished out the starting fleet ive set for myself as I am limiting myself to not go for larger ships in order to have something to spend in game money on. But I have made sure that I can cover every role I want to play on at least a basic level.
I've seen some people get some absolutely insane deals through chaining. It doesn't help too much at the lower even of costs, but can be very useful if you're buying some of the more expensive ships.
I use IAE to buy a bunch of warbond CCUs and a couple of LTI tokens whether I need them or not. eventually I can chain a bunch of CCUs together and come out with inexpensive LTI ships. It doesn't hurt to have a bunch of LTI tokens and if you never use them, you can melt all but one and use all those CCUs to end up with a good, decent value ship.
Ah man, just got into this game and now I can make a plan for it. Thanks for the info on melting and chaining, I think I'll be upgrading. I'd prefer to grind for ships in game, but I hear that a wipe is expected. In that case I might just upgrade to a beefier ship to restart with.
I am hoping to get some good chains this year. My friend did some amazing chaining over the course of a year or something and got a M2 for really cheap. I know I can't get to an M2 from my C1 with only $60, but my math says it should get me to a C2 if all goes well.
Not sure what bigger ship I'm shooting for... But hoping to flush out my chain a bit more. The whole chaining game takes time if you want to do it cheap!
7:44 that’s incompletely stated - in the example that you buy a package for your friend with new money and then CCU chain upgrade it to a better ship before giving it, the upgrades can be made with a mix of store credit.
Chaining is good for a ship that you want to get as long as you never want to melt it and get it back later. I have seen some pretty amazing cheap chains people have pulled off, but again, you can never melt it. I got an inferno and corsair without CCU so now that both are nerfed, I can melt them and use that store credit to get another ship. Then if they ever un-nerf those ships, I can get them back.
Chaining isn't restricted to just warbond upgrades though. Concept chaining is where the real discounts emerge when the release price winds up being way more than initial concept pledge prices. Gotta have all those $5.00 speculator's CCUS covered! 🤩 Good call on the observation that players are mostly just using one ship of a "fleet" at any given time. This idea is lost on some people, and every time I hear or read the words, "If my org needs..." I see a backer who has failed at deducing the scope of the game and their spending within it.
My suggestion to anyone getting past the beginner stage is to get to one money-making ship, ideally LTI, and then earn UEC with it to buy other ships. Chaining can probably save a few dollars from the starter to your money maker of choice.
Right, know your moneymaker. I often say that there are two types of ships. Foundation Ships and Steppingstone ships. Rent the Steppingstone ships and buy the Foundation Ships.

I have yet to do some chaining. I mean, I have upgraded ships, but not with the long term value chain in mind. Still looking for something nice to do with my little cutter LTI, but it wont be an Intrepid for sure :D
Thanks for explaining CCU upgrade chaining; I'm sure it will make more sense eventually (that's on me for being thick rather than you for not explaining it). First IAE, should be an interesting one.
Chaining is not as good as it used to be, especially if you are not willing to wait and fill in the chain over time, but I managed to buy a $250 Apollo for $125 over the course of a year. Thankfully, it's a concept, so I could afford to be patient. Some lucky people have managed much more expensive ships for up to 80% discounts, but much of that was luck...
I got the game two years ago, but only this month i startet my first ccu chain to get a big ship much cheaper. Still have time for the chain until the game releases 😅
While chaining does save money, It shouldn't have to be a thing. I wish they would offer better deals end of year rather than people having to jump through some convoluted process to save a few dollars. Anyway, I hope they have some good surprises this year.
I felt so scammed when I found out about it at IAE my first year playing, AFTER buying a warbond Carrack for $525 that only came with 6 months insurance.
So as far as the locking in the price; if i see a ccu upgrade from a defender to the SL for $5, should i take it even though i dont have the defender? Or do i essentially work backwards durinf IaE and see what can upgrade to the defender and so on and so on
I’ve almost completed my first chain will be getting the c1 for about $60 if the last deal I need is there. Chaining is really manipulative though and I honestly wish it didn’t exist. They need to make money to keep things running though so it is what it is.
All ships should be available for purchase at all times, other than say hull limited ships and all ships should include game access, IAE should just be about war bond discounts for CCU chaining
9:10 My brother, all money spent on ships is a pledge. A donation to be put toward the continuing development of SC and S42. Impatience is the last thing I'd accuse people of when they're giving money to a project that notoriously takes forever. Just sayin.
I knew about upgrading and then (slowly) figured out what Warbond deals were. Never knew about LTI and chaining. Can someone play by downloading the game but NOT paying for anything? Or will the game only work during the events?
To be honest I mostly buy ships for giving away, but long term I'm looking at how to build a chain to eventually getting a Starlancer BLD to play space design/build architect.
Question to people, which mastered chaining: will I be able to chain Orion during this IAE with significant discount or is it only possible to build such through a years?

Can someone play by downloading the game but NOT paying for anything? Or will the game only work during the events?
I’ve never really bothered with CCU chains. I guess I just suck. Lol
I like chaining.
So what ships are you CCU chaining?
To be honest I mostly buy ships for giving away, but long term I'm looking at how to build a chain to eventually getting a Starlancer BLD to play space design/build architect.
When ur at the IAE event for Origin please report the 135c cargo bug at IC #STARC-131376. Such a tiny ship left like this even for IAE is pretty bad.
Question to people, which mastered chaining: will I be able to chain Orion during this IAE with significant discount or is it only possible to build such through a years?
You can chain upgrades, but th only way to save money doing so is by taking advantage of warbond discounts when doing them.
I’m already lining up my CCU chains, I hope they don’t release base building ships this year. I’ve get one going to college soon. Haha😊
Honestly can’t be bothered chaining as I’ve kinda spent my SC money back in 2014/2015 😂
