Nomad is the G.O.A.T sub $100 starter. It can serve as an entry to every non-industrial ship specific gameplay loop available. Cargo/trading/delivery, roc mining, light combat, bunker running. It does it all.

I didn't play for years as the performance was too bad on my system, but thx to upgrades i can play nowadays.. Picked it up again a few days ago and yesterday had my first PvP experience: Dude attacked me in his 350USD ship (Connie variant), not sure what he was thinking as my Arrow was made for this.. Probably thought he could Alphastrike me, but when i outran his missiles and turned around he was in a world of pain.. loved every second of it, most fun i had in gaming in a while for sure.

Too bad the cargo grid beneath the Aurora has been broken for weeks now. You can't carry any cargo containers IN the ship, so you're out of luck. A while back, I pledged for a couple Mirai Pulse grav bikes, because they had LTI (permanent ingame replacement insurance). We call those "LTI tokens," because anything you upgrade them to keeps the LTI from the original pledge. I CCUd (upgraded) one of them to a mini van...err...I mean a Drake Cutter. The cargo grid on the Cutter is also broken, but at least it's INSIDE the ship, so I can put a container in the ship and carry it, as long as I don't care if it bounces around a bit.

Be mindful of the "starter" trap. Some of the ship discussed here are NOT starters. Starters have the unique properties of being dirt cheap to operate and always available (low claim times). The idea is that starters are your "I ran out of aUEC, I need to make some" ships. They are also your "The team is on location X, I need to meet with them with a throw away ship".
How to identify a starter? Blow it up and claim it. if the claim is under 3 mn, it's a starter.
    - The C8R is not a starter.
    - The Arrow is not a starter.
    - The 325a is not a starter.
    - The 315p is not a starter.
    - The Cutless Black is not a starter.
    - The Titan Avenger is dubbed the best starter because its firepower is on par with the other fighters, it has cargo for loot (extremely important) and box missions, it is a true starter, cheap to repair, reload and replace. It has two way of getting in or out (very important for new players that can "lock" themselves out of their ship by jumping off the ramp) and has a bed for logoff. The Avenger is the only starter that gets you to endgame content "as is".
New player: Buy cheap and try the game. Your starter doesn't matter under 60$ USD. If you like the game and want a better starter, just upgrade it by paying the difference between your current and the Avenger. (the update function show you the ship's prices)

Its my personal belief, that IF your going to get into the game from scratch, You might as well just go all in and buy a $100 pledge and go with a ship that can do multiple rolls, there are a few reasons for this, first, the smaller ships cant really do cargo run missions at all. second they suck at actual combat. ya they have some small guns. but fighting stuff is going to be a chore and a nightmare at the same time. a chore as in it takes FOREVER to get a single kill, and a nightmare because its usually 2 and 3 on one and you don't get much for defense in the starters. Third, Distance of travel. the small ships are lucky to have enough fuel to make it to the local Lagrange points. getting from planet to planet is a nightmare of hopping from station to station to refuel, and as a new player your not really going to know to do this!. Fourth LOOT, especially now with the new "stupid as heck" way we have to loot bases now by tractoring a 2SCU box everywhere we go. the small ships cant carry much as it is, and loosing that cargo space to carry a mandatory box at all times. "just in case you do find a good weapon or armor piece you want". takes space away from running other missions.
I HIGHLY recommend going straight for a Cutlass Black, or a C1 for a starter. some people like the Agis Avenger as the best "starter" but I don't. The 2 new "starter ships" to look for at IAE would be the new Intrepid. sucks in combat but is Designed specifically for package delivery runs. and you wont loose out by carrying that 2SCU inventory box with you. and you wont feel cramped traveling around in it. It also appears to have a good Fuel Supply so you don't have to be supper stupid in planing your jumps. and its FAST getting out to orbit in seconds of take off. making getting to your activity of choice a lot less of a chore. I don't know what the new Muri Guardian is going to look like, but It might also be a new good high end starter. Id hope it will be a Vanguard with a small cargo grid and a bed. but we know next to nothing beyond its going to be a heavy fighter.

@@HighmageDerin so if the question is - which do you think is the best ship on this list? I would hands down say the Nomad.
But personally I don’t think it’s worth paying anything more than $45 when you can easily team up, crew other peoples ships, and have a nomad in one or 2 play sessions - a C1 probably in 4-5.

    • @HighmageDerin

@@LoudGuns Thats only because we know how to make money in the verse. for new players they are going in blind. they are going to want to get their feet wet with multiple rolls till they find their bearings. for me, I went though hell for a long time, solo gamer due to life's demands, took a while trying different things before I found that the Vulture is the best ship for me.
on THIS list my choice would probably be the new Intrepid. mainly because its MENT for the very profession that I always recommend new players start with to learn the ins and outs of the game. Package delivery! I dont like the Nomad as a starter ship at all for 3 key reasons. First the way it "lands" its VERY hard to know if your down right and will be able to get back in do to its constant levitation, Ive been in a situation with it where I landed, got out, and now was trapped because I could no longer reach the ladder and get back in. Second is the cargo bed never really reaches the ground making it VERY hard to load and unload vehicles with it, and that whole, loads a ROC thing. Yes it does... till it falls out because it refuses to secure to the cargo grid and pops loose in transit.... and Third, its hard to fly. ITs (at least it was before master modes, haven't flown it since last years IAE) way too fast and too little maneuverability, I smashed into port tressler more times that I care to remember in that ship! Space Breaks and pulling back on the stick did nothing to slow me back down in time, and trying to move out of the way didn't have enough thrust to counter act forward speeds... needless to say I didn't have a good time with it, I LOVE the interior design, but they way it handles was the turn off.
