I love the way you teach - like a mental coach. You make a good psychologist or counsellor. How what not to think or over-think, and do what matters essentially. You teach so effortlessly but I think you gave a lot of fore-thoughts in creating the substance of your videos. Thank you so much.
Thank you for the great compliment. Over the last few years I’ve become very in tune with the mental side of playing an instrument. I try to use that knowledge to my advantage. I do put a lot of thought into the content I put out. It’s important that I do my best so people like yourself can benefit. I have a bunch of new projects I’m working on, Stay tuned!
I love the way you teach too, Dion! The approach you have relaxes and inspires me. I never thought of it before this. I think in terms of articulation. I liked seeing and hearing the different syllables we can use when tonguing too. Great lesson as always and thanks much!
I do and you explained very well. I also posted a question for you in another video. It is the one on sliding. I asked about the alternative way for lefthanded player.
I really like this WAY of thinking. Embellish the air. The air is doing the work, just put ornaments on it. Embellish the air!!!! And then you can do soooo much!!
Dion...when you give the example of just blowing air through the straw...and talk about don't necessarily think about buzzing lips, isn't that essentially a breath "attack"? Enjoy the videos...keep 'em coming! thx.
You can create a breath attack this way but the approach is not limited to that. I think about the same process when using my tongue to embellish the initial articulation. Thanks for checking out the content! My next video is focused on breath attacks, check it out once it’s released.
@@paulmorris8386 I think about it like this, everything is an embellishment of a long tone. When we articulate, the tongue is just embellishing a long tone. We hear the sound of separated notes but the airstream has the same function. The tongue doesn’t make a sound so it’s function is to embellish the airstream.
Great video (again) - any ideas on how to increase the speed on single tounging? I understand your concept of relaxation and about to think about articulation, but at some point you need to increase the speed on the single tounging by being able to play according to the music written e.g. when playing a concerto. Any exercises that you recommend to increase single tounging speed:-) Thanks in advance
A metronome can come in handy for gradually speeding up your single tongue. Increasing the tempo by a few beats every week or so will do wonders! It’s important to keep in mind the faster you articulate, the lighter the tongue should feel in the mouth. Experiment with how much tongue you have to use to get the sound of the articulation you’re going for. We can often achieve the same result while doing much less work.

I’m glad this video resonates with you! Use these tools to unlock your potential. I look forward to working with you again.
I never could figure out how to explain this concept to people, I glad you did!
I’m glad the explanation was helpful. Sometimes when we hear things a certain way it resonates with us.

Dion, it’s fantastic, the videos! This one about the articulation gives me a bit of insight on what Jan will be coaching me
Soon enough you will be observing this relationship with the air stream. It’s very liberating!
my trombone teacher showed me this, it's really cool!
I wish I learned this concept when I first started playing. It’s been really helpful for me.
Thanks Dion. Articulation is definitely the way I think of it.
That way is better for me as well!
Love the jingle! Excellent explanation
Glad you like the jingle! Thanks for checking out the video, there are many more to come.

It's just as important for the tongue to get out of the way after we use it. Sometimes we get stuck on what to do and forget about what not to do.

@@TheChopsShop ok, thx. Look fw. to that new video. Am trying to get my head around "using tongue to embellish initial articulation....!"

@@TheChopsShop thanks for spenning time to respond to me 👍
No problem!
Facinating.
May I ask what trombone you play on?
Thanks for checking out the content! I play a Shires custom model. It’s a triple bore setup that goes from a .495 slide to .508 at the bell.
It was the bell that made me curious.
@@trombonerful Yes I believe it Shires SY7M model.
With. We haven’t gotten to that yet.
