My problem is that when I say "Da ga da ga" or "Ta ka ta ka" even remotely quickly, I get tongued tied very quickly and it just comes out as "Ta ta ta ta" or "Da da da da"
I felt the way you do and this still happens to me. Something that works for me is to practice multiple tonguing VERY slowly to the point where it's almost unbearable. This starts to strengthen your tongue and the muscles that facilitate your tonguing so that when you finally speed it up you have it fully under control.
I think it might be about the dreaded ‘p’ word (practice!). I’ve been told by a teacher that the tongue is a muscle and you need to build it up the same way as any other muscle.
Hurrah I got it. Your awesome!! I played drums my whole life now at 65 years old took up trombone three months later I’m double and triple tonguing!!! Not super fast but slow and smooth. My dad played for the symphony in Europe so I was brought up with that sound and I think it’s the greatest sounding instrument on earth!!! Thanks
This video helped me solidify my knowledge of double tonguing and triple tonguing without taking me back to kindergarten! Thank you so much for teaching in a consumable and versatile way!
Thanks Kyle Teachings on technique are always welcome. the problem is putting this technique into practice. For example playing in a band is difficult to keep the air flowing continuously.
Very true. I was going to mention in the video that band is a great place to practice this. Double tonguing the whole and half notes, if you don't get caught you're doing it right!
HI Kyle, I've just started playing my trombone again, and wanted to improve some of my technique, such as double tonguing. I was taught doing "tu-ku-tu-ku", but that never sounded correct. I tried your suggestion of using "da-ga" instead today (and of course kept in mind that the air flow is constant), and voila, I was able to double-tongue 16th notes cleanly! Hooray! Thanks.
Thank you so so so so much I have been playing for about 5-6 years and I just got to highschool with my new director and I realized that I didn't know how to tongue and I've been going puh instead of Ta or Ka for like 5-6 years and this really helped me learn how to use my tongue to play instead of using my throat to play because I've been playing using a puh sound and this really helped thank you so much you are wonderful.
Thank you so much for this I’ve been playing euphonium for 6 years and have never had a breakthrough like I did when watching this video you made me a better player and I thank you for that. Please keep up the good work.
It's like muscle training. You just have to keep doing it at a slow tempo until it feels like your tongue it going to fall off. But you also have to know how to single tongue properly. You need to have a consistent air flow, not stopping it hard when you tongue, and not let your tongue hit your teeth. If you can't single tongue, you won't be able to double tongue. I've spent a whole year now learning double and triple tonguing. I had practiced it about an hour a day. Now I'm pretty confident at both. I can even triple tongue scales. Now I'm working on arpeggios and large intervals. At the moment I can comfortably triple tongue the chromatic scale at a tempo of 90.
Recently, I've tried to learn double tonguing after playing trumpet for 5 years, and it almost feels like my tongue is too fat to let air past if i don't use the tip of my tongue.
Hey mate, do you offer online sessions by any chance? After 30 odd years, I don't think I've even learned how to properly tongue. And as a result, have never really bean able to multi-tongue.
You can get your triplets super fast if you can manage to learn ||:DA GA DA - GA DA GA:|| Not gonna lie and say it’s easy lol but if you can get it smooth and committed to muscle memory you can fly through triplets.
My problem is that when I say "Da ga da ga" or "Ta ka ta ka" even remotely quickly, I get tongued tied very quickly and it just comes out as "Ta ta ta ta" or "Da da da da"

@@treytrombone457 Thank you so much. I'll try that
also try saying the syllables when your not playing to get used to them
Pick a tune that would require double tonguing and treat the syllables like lyrics.

I'm a high school band player trying to get better at my articulation , and this was very helpful. Thank you

Well done! I'm glad it clicked for someone else too. I felt like I had unlocked a new super power.
Can you please do a video on trills please
This video helped me solidify my knowledge of double tonguing and triple tonguing without taking me back to kindergarten! Thank you so much for teaching in a consumable and versatile way!
Same! I agreed with everything he said, it made me more comfortable with my current knowledge.
I only play the guitar and piano. No idea why I watched this but it was very interesting :)
Maybe you secretly want to play the trombone??
guess what your next instrument is lol
@@KyleRafteryMe playing all three: 😒.
This is the best instruction I have seen! Thank so much!
Thanks Kyle

Kyle, excellent video man. I liked the x-ray of the man double tonging. Hahahah! awesome!
I too have struggled for years with double tonguing. This is the best explanation anyone has given me. Thanks
Nice explanation!! this was today topic with my student! thanks for doing this videos!! cheers from Mexico!
Amazing explanation, thanks mate, God Bless you!♥️

Best video on articulation by far.
Thank you very much, there’s a section in a upcoming audition that I have that moves quite fast and this was a huge help!
I will be using this, hopefully i can finally learn
Excellent explanation. Great shirt.
Thanks! I'm glad it made sense to someone!

You're welcome. Sounds like you had exactly the same bad habit as me, using the throat instead of the tongue.
Thank you so much for this I’ve been playing euphonium for 6 years and have never had a breakthrough like I did when watching this video you made me a better player and I thank you for that. Please keep up the good work.
That's great to hear! Glad it helped.
Great. Thanks so much. I love your video inserts.
Thanks! They make me laugh :)
Great description. Will try with my tuba
this was really helpful im trying to get better on trombone so thanks!

Thx ... solved a few persistent questions I had
Thanks so much for this! Hopefully you can do more educational videos in future! (High notes, tone, editing etc)
Will do, have some planned on editing soon!
This is fantastic! Thank you!
thank you Kyle.
I'll practice this on a date
Please let me know how that goes, even better film it.
amazing!!!
Thank you so much this helped me out a lot 🎺😁
Glad it helped!
Thanks for this great video, ❤️❤️❤️
You are so welcome!
Thank u so much that did help A LOT😅 and I'm a 13 year old boy who plays trumpet❤
Recently, I've tried to learn double tonguing after playing trumpet for 5 years, and it almost feels like my tongue is too fat to let air past if i don't use the tip of my tongue.
im having a hard time trying to make my back tongue clear and it feels too long. is there any tips or exercises to make my back tongue more short?
Hey mate, do you offer online sessions by any chance? After 30 odd years, I don't think I've even learned how to properly tongue. And as a result, have never really bean able to multi-tongue.
The tongue up tapping the alveolar ridge? Or tapping the enamel of the teeth?
6:26 freaky
So apparently I’ve been tonguing incorrectly my entire time playing the French Horn :( I can’t move the tongue fast enough to block the hole
When I do the second syllable sound does not come out I am not able to buzz my lips
Sounds like something to work through with a good teacher but most problems have something to do with too much tension.
I can do it but it sounds so muddy and moving notes is a pain:/
I asked someone how to double tongue (long after I stopped playing).
He looked at me and said, "Taka taka taka".
And you know what?
That's IT!!
Yep, some people just 'get' it.
I can’t say “da ga da ga” any faster than I can say “da da da da” . Was it that way for others I wonder.
From a bass clarinet player in high school, thank you. 🙏 16-note triplets are fun stuff.
Clicked on this video to see if you were talking about an instrument
There's always one..
Is the video kind of sped up? Lol
I can triple tongue but can’t double tongue 🤣
You can get your triplets super fast if you can manage to learn

Wow that MRI was disgusting but really helpful
I’m 13 and I learned how to when I was 12
me too, I learned how to do it on trombone when i was 12
When are you going to learn that nobody asked
Nice work. I was a good trumpet player as a kid but double tonguing was something I just didn't get the hang of. Glad you figured it out.
