  • The traditional Cham dance in My Son are part of the cultural heritage of the Champa.
In the entrance area of the My Son sanctuary is a stage, where the visitors can watch the performances free-of-charge.
The Cham culture in My Son is characterized by Hinduism, which at that time extended from India to Southeast Asia.
Hinduism found its precipitation not only in its architecture, which was largely destroyed by the effects of war, but also in music, its instruments, and its dances.
A small group of committed artists gives us a lively picture of a part of the Cham culture. In most dances, Shiva and Apsaras take center stage. But the Carrying Water Dance also addresses everyday life.
The graceful movements of the dancers require a hard physical training. The melodious music played on specially designed instruments, harmoniously underscores the dance.
The traditional Cham dance are offered only again since 2003.

I love Cham Apsara so much! It is extremely beautiful and totally different to other Apsaras from Khemer or India. In fact, Cham Apsara has been lost along with the decline of Champa Kingdom. One of the reasons is that it was mainly enjoyed by Cham Royals but everybody. This dance has been recovered from the reliefs for dancers on the ruined temples or ancient towers by a great Vietnamese dancer, Dang Hung. Maybe you don’t know that most of the dancers in Apsara dance are Kinh people. Because Cham is now a part of Vietnam so everybody in the country should contribute to the development of the country including culture as well as economy. And the recovery traditional culture of Cham is not only from Cham people but also from Kinh people (major ethenic group).

Pay close attention to their unique and delicate hand movements, which are totally different from those of Cambodian and Thai dancers. This Cham-Indic dance and music indeed set Vietnam apart from its neighboring countries, including China and Cambodia.

I'm Cham from Chaudoc, Vietnam and all of my ancestors not sure what Century but the Persians brought back the Islam religions so in this region majority are Muslims. There are Muslim quarter where they do have halal food. I emigrated to America n 1981. We are all mixed with Vietnamese and other races like Chinese, and Cham. I love this because i don't get to see the original Cham dances as we follow the strict Islam religion, but I considered myself more American not good at practice of the religion.

The headgear they have isn’t accurate, I believe they wore gold crown similar to Khmers Thai and Javanese, it was different style but material was definitely gold, the skirt would be soft and flowy not stiff like Chinese attire here but the length is correct. They also wore bangles similar to Khmers, Javanese, Balinese or Thai. They also wore beads. The dancing isn’t true to the original art and is most likely reinvented. Cham people dancing style is actually faster and not so robotic like here. Unfortunately all the Apsara dancers were either killed or lost their art somewhat so we will never know. I would have loved to see how ancient Champa apsara was like as well. It was indeed a dance only for religious ceremonies and for the Royal people similar to Khmer Apsaras which was only dance during religious or for the royals. The music also isn’t Cham, from the sound of it I think it’s more of traditional Vietnamese style. I honestly think the original if it had not died would be a blend of Khmer, Balinese and Javanese style of musical instrumental style.
