Many times just can't seem to get that good picture. And defintly could not get any picture on plane. So one day i just reached back there and pushed it down allot lol. All of a sudden my picture cleared up 100% it looks crazy as hell out of the water and guys probly laugh at me. But i got the best clear picture I've ever had. Crazy!

    Amateur striper fisherman here. Couple of weeks ago I was headed somewhere else from where I had been at about 20mph and I started marking a lot of solid yellow returns. Hit da brakes on my boat and the stripers were stacked under me in 35-40fow. Dropped my spoon down and caught 25 stripers. Kept nine and threw back 16 long fish that were over the legal keeping size. It was lights out. I told my son and he said “ I didn’t think you could mark fish going that fast?” Good to know I’m not alone on this. And unknown to me at the time before watching this video of yours, I had decided to tilt my garmin transducer down slightly thinking it might help on plane or in rougher water. Thanks for the tips they have been working for me!

      @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thanks ! I had been having a rough time catching live shad with my net. I’m a rookie what can I say? So I switched up to some shattered glass flutter spoons seeing you had posted a video not too long ago using them. Most people say they are highly effective in the fall transition. At the time I didn’t really know how to use them. Still trying and trying to learn how to use slabs…. Any how I just dropped the spoon down to the bottom and burned it up. Nailed them! And was able to catch several on the drop. Was good for about a week I’d find the fish stacked in the dead heat 105* of the late afternoon. Now, they are gone and when I do find them they aren’t wanting the spoon. I’m gonna go back to trying live bait. Found a cove over the weekend where I was able to net some really nice gizzard shad. Thanks for all the tips. Really helping me out!

    Hey Mike, what a great channel and kudos to the effort you put into this. Definitely helping me out as I am a beginner to fishing. Have to say the transducer dilemma has got my head spinning. I have a new to me boat on its way and looking to get it setup the right way. Looking for through hull transducer that can be can bar flexible as I learn my fishing needs. My boat is a 30' Robalo and built for offshore. I plan to do that but wouldn't be the majority of my time. I plan to bottom fish inshore in less than 100ft of water. Then also plan to try to snag some small tuna a few trips out of the year in 200-300ft. I have Garmin 8616 dual screens and want to pair it with a good transducer. Please help me here, my mind is spinning and I am getting lots of conflicting information. I love the idea of scouting fish at 30mph!!! Great video

      Thanks brother!! The B175 Medium is for you for sure! The relatively wide cone gives you ability to mark more fish when you are running on plane for sure. Even though it’s cone is pretty wide, you still get good bottom detail at those depths. This amzn.to/45GnTBZ. Is great shallow and surpasses your needs for 300-400ft of water. Some may say you need a LOW Chirp channel, but you won’t see the benefits at less than 600ft and LOW CHIRP comes at a price by losing a lot of detail, especially the detail you want for bottom fishing. Low is also very slow scrolling. This transducer only needs one channel input, where a Low/High would need two channels👍👍👍amzn.to/45GnTBZ

    Hey Mike I love watching your videos and I've learned a lot. I do have a question for you about marking fish in deep water. Fish mainly live bottom so there's not necessarily schools like on a wreck but once I get to about 150 to 250 ft my machine doesn't Mark the fish well at all even when I zoom in. It's a Simrad go 9 with the transom Mount transducer multi-scan I believe. I've watched several of your videos and have set up my machine according to your instruction everything works great aside from deep water.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Год назад +1

      Thanks brother!!! The Go series is pretty unbelievable for the price, but it does have some limitations. You are probably right around the threshold where abilities start to suffer a bit. You can try a few things like using Medium CHIRP. High is best for shallower water. You can turn your gain up until you get a little noise on the screen. Turn up color as well. Try down scan too. Fish marks will be smaller but they might show up better. The next step would be to upgrade to a higher end CHIRP transducer. Unfortunately you will lose side and down scan as the CHIRP transducers made by Airmar are CHIRP only. A TM150 med would be a nice step up. If you do a lot of bottom fishing maybe a second display with a 150 on it may be your best bet depending on your budget. Let me know how it works out for you 👍👍

      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Год назад +1

      I appreciate that Shaka!! A lot depends on the fish, but I like to see Striper schools super thick, but not super tight to the bottom. When you see than extremely tight, close to the bottom, with No Baitfish around and the water is deeper than 40ft they can extremely tough to catch because they aren’t actively feeding. I like to see them loose and moving up and down feeding 👍👍

    Hey Mike, you do a great job sharing your extensive knowledge through videos.
    I believe you mainly fish in the NE, but have you ever fished for King Mackerel further south on the East Coast?
    They have small air bladders and are difficult to mark. I have been on crazy hot bites before and not marked a fish under the boat. I have sometimes marked fish with short horizontal lines when catching Kings. Sort of like dashes (I have some screenshots saved). Not sure if those were kings.
    Do you have any tips or techniques to help mark kings?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Год назад

      Great question!! We fished with Joe Marciano a mess of times and always caught Macks for bait. We were able to see them perfectly with the higher end Airmar CHIRP transducers, but they were nearly invisible with a cheaper single frequency transducer I had. I’m not sure what’s going on technically, but the CHIRP transducers worked great and down scan also picked them up. I actually fish for Stripers in salt and fresh from Georgia and Tennessee up through Gloucester. 👍👍

    Hi Mike, thanks for all the informative videos! I noticed in your earlier videos, you’d mount the transducer very low in the water, to the point where most of the transducer is in the water. Now it looks like you’ve raised it a little to a more conventional height and you’ve reversed it. Has your thinking changed in regards to the height of the transducer? Or is it more a case of mounting being boat specific and what works for one boat doesn’t work for another?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Год назад +1

      I think that’s just a coincidence really. Sea Pro mounted these, whereas I mounted the previous. They are working great so I don’t mess with them😉. They aren’t too far from where I had them. Front edges are around 1/4” below transom 👍👍👍. The reversed mount is only because of the wire. It’s a preproduction mount and it pinch’s the wire otherwise. I just flip the image on the display 😁👍. Thanks for the continued support brother!!🙏😁

    At 30 mph what depth would it be hard to see fish on the bottom? Beautiful fish! What are your regs on stripers? On the west coast there is talk of putting a slot limit on stripers of 20 to 30 inches. Right now it is 18 inch minimum with no upper limit. Enjoyed the video!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Год назад +1

      Thanks brother!! Most states have a slot 28-38” now. Depending on the transducer you can see fish bottom quite deep. Mine can see fish on bottom over 1000 feet deep, but not at 30 mph. As it gets deeper everything slows down. The pings take more time to return. There are a few tricks for deeper water, like setting the range only for where you expect to see fish. Speeding up scroll speed. Ping speed etc. 👍👍

    Hey Mike, Fan of the channel. I'm in the market for a new fishfinder/transducer for Lake Murray Striper fishing and Charleston Inshore Fishing. You recommend a lot of different Simrad units and transducers and I'm still learning the differences. One thing I noticed is that at the beginning of the video, you are pointing to the transom transducer and how to set up to get readings on plane. However, your fishfinder is showing that the transducer being used is the Airmar 175 High/Wide on the center screen. Can you confirm which transducer you were using in the video? I'd like to see a video with the transom mount one if it wasn't. Thanks!

      Pretty much all of my videos from 2012-2016 were shot with a transom mount medium CHIRP transducer. This one here amzn.to/2BsVMud. I use Simrad Evo3 and Evo3 s displays. They are the best of the best. I use this transducer for side scan amzn.to/2ErP9ug. If the Evo3 is out of your budget this is a fine alternative, it has the 3in1 transducer included, you will use this for CHRIP as well since this series display only has one transducer port amzn.to/3zmWWTV

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Год назад

      Yes sir! I use two screens because side scan shows a very large piece of water at once. The larger screen the more you can see and get out of it. You can get away with one screen in most cases for sure. Larger displays and multiple displays are really a luxury. Just keep in mind. You can split the Evo3 S into 5 panels and other Simrad’s also do 4 panels at once. If you use every panel things get very hard to see.

    Hello, and thanks for this video. Would this "technique" work on a fresh water lake for largemouth, spotted, and smallmouth bass? Or are they typically too small to have the sonar pick them up at that speed?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Год назад +1

      A lot depends on what time of year. I have found schools of Bass, catfish, and even carp while looking for Stripers so it’s certainly possible. If I was fishing for Largemouth and Spotted bass in summer I would scan points for baitfish first. If I found bass feeding under the Shad then I would follow that pattern; looking for bait schools primarily since they are easier to see, then goin to side scan at slower speeds dialing in the bass. Of course in spring when they are on the beds this won’t work, but when they are holding deeper they are certainly more vulnerable to sonar 👍👍

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 месяца назад +1

      @officialWWM no problem. Yes, the deeper the water the wider your cone. Exactly like shining a flash light. It’s a small circle on your hand and a giant circle on a barn door 100 ft away. The trick is to never worry about pin pointing individual fish that you mark on the screen to cast to. Instead, focus on the PATTERN and BEHAVIOR of the fish on the screen. For instance, I will search until I mark good numbers of fish. I’ll try to figure out what they are RELATING to. I’ll note how deep they are hanging. Is there some type of structure on the screen? Are fish hanging on trees, rocks, stumps, points, humps, etc. are there baitfish schools nearby? Are they deep because they are relating to water temps or current? When I figure out what they are relating too i can make a game plan, but I won’t try to target individual fish on the screen.
      I know this sounds overwhelming at first, but this is what you do; search until you mark good number of fish. If they are hanging 20 ft down but the water is 50ft deep drop baits straight down to 20ft in that area. If you mark fish 20ft deep in water that is also 20ft put your baits on the bottom. If you only mark them on rocks on the bottom, put your baits right down to the rocks. Hope this makes sense. Let me know if I can help further. 👍👍😁

    In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ruclips.net/user/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

      Yes sir!! Actually some fantastic new restrictions have been passed in the last 2 years. Only inline circle hooks are allowed for bait fishing in several East Coast states. A slot limit letting you keep only one fish between 28-38” is in its second year in some states, third in others. (Protecting larger breeders) The Menhaden boats also had some restrictions put on them with some fines as well. My only disappointment is the strong resistance I have seen from the majority of fishermen saying it’s too harsh. The problem is this: fishing right now is phenomenal. We are reaping the benefits of very successful spawns over 10 to 15 years ago. When we catch 20, 30 and 40 pound fish, they were born 10 to 15 years ago when things were great. it can take many years for those poor spawns to reveal themselves to us. This makes it very difficult to win an argument when fishing is fantastic if you know what I mean. It seems that our only saving grace in convincing people there is a problem is comparing the stocks to before we had the moratorium in the late 80s. Let’s hope these new restrictions do the trick!!!! Thanks for the comments I really appreciate it brother!!
