Rameau left a choice between violin and flute for the upper part, but pesonally and definitely, I prefer the flute, or some renderings in which hte players alternate violin and flute depending upon the style of the piece. In addition, the title makes it clear that the harpsichord has to be put forward, which is easier with a flute than with a violin.
The harpsichord is prominent in these pièces de clavecin en concert, but the other instruments are obbligato. Rameau transcribed some of these pieces for harpsichord solo, and he wrote actual transcriptions, different from the harpsichord part of the concerts. Flute is an ossia explicitly quoted by Rameau. I always thought that is was lighter and more elegant than the violin in this type of writing.
Thank you all for sharing this beautiful music with the public!
I love Rameau! And with flute too! Sounds great!
