- We met up with Niobe, an Amel 50, in Medana Bay Marina, Lombok Indonesia. Niobe is a beautiful yacht, and I thought y'all would like to see what she looks like inside and out.
Benz has sailed Niobe with his family halfway around the world with the ARC. There is a lot of good information in the video, so sit back and enjoy.
The Amel 50 is a beautiful and capable yacht, with ALL the amenities. This boat feels like a 60 footer inside, and is very comfortable! A true passage maker. You have to see this!
To start off the video we talk about the Amel 50 with Captain Benz. Many tours just talk about the pieces and parts of the boat, but we try to bring you more of the personality of the boats. Currently circumnavigating with the ARC, we discuss a bit about the ARC, and sailing with kids as well.
Make sure that you give us a like, and subscribe to Sailing Aquarius!
Thanks so much for watching 🙏
Stay tuned as next Friday 12PM EST we release a new video 🎥

Quite possibly the most informative "insider knowledge" video I've ever seen. What's more, you couldn't have come across a nicer, more pleasant family. Good luck to them on their huge adventure!
And so honest too...
@@sperlongatoursAll boats hold their black water on board (it is the law). You can keep it until you dock at a marina, or you can dump it at sea if your at least 3 miles out. Sperm Whales poop over 400,000 tons year into the ocean, they don't pull into Marina's... =)
i like the owner, this man has all my thoughts of double down on safety issues. when you 1000 miles out of the sea you are alone and never bet on luck.
@@xuchun5371 His lack of sailing knowledge is the ultimate danger. That and his “sailing” to a rigid schedule. A foolish man.
hey ~ life is short, good to do what you want to do, have fun !
Hands down, the BEST walkaround of any boat ever.
Thank you!
This "non-sailor" is one of the most legit, knowledgeable sailor I've ever seen. And super cool and laid back too:)
he’s a russian agent lmao just got arrested for smuggling
“That’s the way I like it, that’s the way I roll”. Best quote ever!
I'm glad that other boaters negative comments about your group size and other things didn't bother you. They're just jealous. Incredible first boat my friend!!
Thank you!
I love how each person points out what's most important to them. Cap/Dad: dual nav/autopilot, fresh water supply. Lucia: crisps locker in my room!
I’m very grateful to Benz and his delightful family for allowing us a glimpse into their amazing world, the boat, the kit and family are from ‘the top drawer’ with access to technology we mere mortals can only dream of. The children behaved impeccably, they were engaging, chatty and clearly keen to help but not trying to ‘steal the show’ . Thanks for sharing 😀
Thanks for the nice comment!
A very careful father he's thought of nearly everything that you can shove inside of a boat for comfortable and safety of his family what a great guy great to see there lovely home
Absolutely!
I couldn't agree more with your philosophy. As they say: "Two is one and one is none".
This guy is awesome. Love his honesty and logic.
Yes, he does resemble that comment!
Yeah, especially the "my wife was right" part ;)
I completely agree. I'm an enthusiast sailor. I race since I was 16. I've been part of good and winning teams. Facing the sea and the bad weather for few days is already enough. You enjoy your "race against the nature" and you accept to stay awake for your 4 hours shift, then go inside, eat something that "comes in, goes out, taste disgusting, but keeps you going", clean yourself with some wipe and sleep on a rigid berth... till the next tackle!!
Travel the world is something different. And you need a boat made for that..... like Amels!
Well said!
A beautiful boat for a lovely family. Such a nice owner, thank you for this.
We also chose this boat.
Thanks for the review. You are one of the first on RUclips to introduce the real owner of the Amel 50.
Thanks, and hope to see you out here!
Mr. Benz, you manifest a consistent demeanor of thoughtfulness, care, humility and an analytic bent. These qualities, considered together with the intelligent manner of your interviewer and videographer, make this video a tremendous asset for all viewers. The folks at the Amel yard should be dancing in the streets. Really!
I agree
@@sm6wet I think Amel is very happy with the boat (sales). Not sure they could pump them out any faster ... don't quote me, but I think they have delivered almost 60 in 3 years ...? The sales speak to the pedigree of the design and the builder.
@@tonys2957 Isn't that the truth. I think they have a two year waiting list for this boat.
One of the best boat tours that I have ever seen. Never have seen a boat with a window to see the prop how neat. Please tell the owners thank you and loved the kids. Thank you for the video.
Would you please be able to point to where the prop window is in the video? Thank you in advance! 🙏
@@fabiocaetanofigueiredo1353 50:17
@@geogeo2299 thank you very much!
Probably the best boat tour video I have ever seen.
Thank you 🙏 😊
Thanks to the family for generously showing their home. Thanks to you for taking the trouble to to share this video. It’s the most informative and interesting Amel 50 tour so far. Trouble is; now I want one!
Well, your just going to have to get one! Please share this tour of your next boat with all your friends. It will really help us!! :)
This is a man who should be listened to.
No doubt!
I can watch this video over and over
This looks like a totally awesome boat. What a nice family, too. Thank you for showing it, and thank them for sharing their home.
LOVE his attitude, attention for safety,,,Dude has a backup for his backup,,,great boat as well.,,,Really impressive video.
Right on
A sailing fleet of friends roaming the oceans together sounds kind of fun. Peeling off to go it along for short periods and rejoining later sounds fun. Nice boat. Good philosophy. Awesome family.
hmmm would be great to always travel with more boats ... if u get into trouble u have help right away ... well that's what learned in mountaineering and 4x4 offroading anyways...
No surprise you chose this one. The delos crew has shown for 10 years what an amazing boat it is.
For non-sailors - every boat can have two of everything, not just Amels. Learning to maintain and repair and general experience will make up for the buffer this boat seems to provide as described early on. Lovely boat, nice family. thanks for sharing. Would like to see more of him and his experiences.
Yes, I would also like to see the Crew again someday! They are in the Caribbean now after completing a circumnavigation with the ARC.
Thank you Amel 50, What a treat to a blessed life. Beautiful Family and Beautiful Boat.
I like the way this guy promotes redundancy. That's a prepper principle.
Two is one - one is none.
That's always a good approach, especially for a sailboat!
Also this guy is super laid back. I like that.
Want! Enjoyed a nubee's perspective on cruising. Nice family.
Thanks Daniel!
Nothing better than "intentional parents." You guys are so awesome and encouraging! Wonderful, beautiful family! Boat is super cool too!
We agree!
What a beautiful yacht. I would love to sail with that Captain. I think I would learn more in two weeks with him than I would learn in a year with someone else. A very pleasant and beautiful family too. I wish them all the best on their world trip. Stay safe and fair winds.
They finished their first circumnavigation about 3 months ago.
Was at the Düsseldorf Boat Show at the weekend. Looked at the new Hallberg Rassy 57, Oyster 565, CNB 66 wasn't on show but her bigger sister so had a good impression of quality and convenience, and lastly the Amel 60. The HR starts at 1.8 million incl. tax, Oyster wouldn't quote but I guess around the same as CNB which starts around 1.5 million not including tax and has an extras list as long as my arm, and finally the Amel 60 which starts at just under 2 million with a extras list of goodies to push the price up accordingly. All the yachts are beautifully made with varying levels of comfort and sailability. The HR is a real sailers boat. Solid with excellent woodwork and with the twin helming stations, a big leap forward. I looked in every nook and cranny and didn't see anything which wasn't finished to perfection. There is a hard biminy option which makes it look even more solid and with the automated winches, in-mast furling etc, probably really easy to sail either alone or with two. The CNB is just perfection. Spoke to a young guy called Lukas Heyde. Very nice and helpful and obviously in love with the product. Everything about her deck and interior layout (which is the same on the 66, but smaller) is finished to very high standards. Has a Man Overboard emergency option, meaning, if the skipper etc falls off the boat, the dongle around his/her neck tells the boat they are no longer on board. The boat automatically turns into wind and stops. It also has a "Keep on Station" and remote option which is GPS controlled making it very easy, apparently, to dock the boat short handed or even alone. The Oyster is also beautiful, well equipped and with it's big side windows, a real delight to look at from inside and outside. I couldn't really find anything about the boat to complain about, apart from the three sales guys sitting in the salon who were not interested in speaking to potential clients, but more in their iPads. Then came the Amel 60. This boat seems to be a floating collection of superlatives. Everything mentioned in this video is true. You can do everything from that cockpit without having to go out on deck once. At least not after the initial set up. There isn't any part or corner of the boat which isn't draw dropping. From the set up on deck, the sail configuration possibilities, the relax area space and and and. My only gripe is the laminated deck. Maintenance free but teak just looks and feels better. The interior layout, galley, cabins, salon area and nav-station are a pleasure to behold. If I ever decide, the Amel is definately on my short list.
Robert w. Enjoyed your comments very informative many thanks
We have a Teak deck and i can tell you that after 10-20 years teak will be a major headache. It obviously depends on how it's maintained, but mine was looked after by contractors and they have wrecked it. I am looked at almost a third of the value of the boat to replace it. Never again.
Yes, the idea of the laminate deck isn't initially appealing but this was a part of Henri Amel's original 'keep it simple' idea. In 20 yrs the deck will still be immaculate whereas teak will need a complete re-furb.
What a great review. Thank you Robert W. I fell in love with the Amel many years ago thanks to SV Delos. Awesome gentlemen Brian and Brady. do like the Oyster. What is your opinion on the Southerly? The lovely couple from Distant Shores whom have been sailing the globe for more than 35 years just love their Southerly. I think it is their third or fourth one?
@@wernerbezuidenhout9532 They just bought a Discovery 48.
Loved the Amel 60, great boat. Great guy & family :). No words for those "real sailors" that bash someone for a boat that he loves. Please give him/"new sailors" with kids on board the tip to drag a buoy with a 60ft rope behind em while on big passages, when you meet them. Keep the content coming, the quarantine gives so much time :D
I have not seen this type of format before. Owners showing us there boats yes brokers shoeing boats yes but this approach informative and refreshing we get to see an owner who is able to relax and discuss the features of his yacht. I think you are on to something here thougherly enjoyed my self. This is unlike any boat tour I have seen .congrats to all
Yeah, I don't really like videos staring a pompous boat broker using all the cool boat lingo showing off a boat that usually is not ready for an ocean crossing. I like to show the owners personality, How and Why he/she outfitted his/her boat the way they did. Glad you agree! Fair Winds
@@SailingAquarius what uyou are doing is quite unique and a large market exists for this format I would post on dual sites same format but on another site strictly for this type of presentation
What an honest man. Enjoy this interview very much.
Thanks!
You guys are awesome! Such a great "real world" perspective of an amazing yacht and how a family can explore the world! Kudos on doing a wonderful job of bringing up your children with their eyes wide open, I'm sure that they are going to be the leaders of the future that we so badly need! Seeing how wonderful your kids are gives me some hope in the crazy world we live in these days.
I've sailed through enough ocean storms too appreciate the advantages this boat offers. At 64 I still have the desire too do some serious cruising but I don't want exaust myself struggling with a vessel that requires more movement and physical energy at sea too manage. This boat has simplified everything and automated everything too such a degree it's sit back and enjoy the ride, that's what I'm looking for. I want too survive the ride and come back fresh and ready for the next adventure. Also so many of the vessels in this level come with teak decks. I don't want to clean and oil teak decks. I like AMELS gel coat decks. One less thing to do. More time for day trips, shopping, visiting sites etc. Less maintenance more relaxing and fun. Those teak decks add an extra $200,000 to the cost of the boat. There is your cruising kitty right there. More pocket cash less work. Let's go sailing .
Thank you, this was a great informative video about the Amel50. The fact that 2 owners could compare makes all the difference.
Thanks Dirk! Fair Winds
Awesome review. Thank for letting this happen. No one ever does the newer Amel reviews. So nice to see one being used as it should. You have a great family. Cheers.
What a knowledgeable owner /operator! Really enjoyed the video.
Those kids made me laugh! Can’t wait to show my wife. Thanks guys.
Our pleasure!
Great kids ! so well mannered they seem..
Looks like they have two, or three wonderful teachers!
Very thoughtful commentary from the Captain. Interesting discussion. Thank you.
Good reasons to choose this yacht, good logic and reasoning of why you do what you do.👍🏻
Thanks!
Sin duda uno de los mejores videos informativos sobre lo que es realmente necesario para disfrutar una navegacion seguro. Te felicito y sin duda una bella familia.
Thanks for the nice comment!
What a beautiful well appointed yacht and family to match. I like his thinking on redundancy. To me that is not money wasted it is peace of mind and knowing I'm able to take care of my family whatever may come. Thank you for the tour may you have fair winds and safe travels, God Bless...
J'adorre, et surtout une grande amitiés et solidarité de la Bretagne
This is an excellent video. Covers all the important details.
Best tour ever!
Thanks!
I just read through the commentary and replies(74 comments) and am struck by the thoughtful and insightful remarks. Truly, it is a commentary on the channel and the videos you have posted up to now. And the comment about Drake Paragon was quite true....keep on my friends!
Very nice boat and for not being an experience sailor the owner knows the boat systems very well.
The process of buying a boat in which you will take your family around the world, is a learning experience. And Benz has done his homework!
I really hope he'll learn sailing as soon.
I really enjoyed to see, that this yacht just filled up with real life, and parents which are not caring about things and papers sticked to the cabins.
I had this same thought. The overflow of 'life' in that cabin would have driven me crazy (as a crusty moderately old fart who has no kids and is stuck in his ways), but it makes for a spectacular, loving environment for the kids, full of adventure and learning. Great work building a boat that works for you and building a wonderful family.
What a blessing those children are! You can tell they are well-liked! ❤ Happy children make my spirit smile
What a great review on this new Amel model, not just one looking at it all new but looking at it in real life being used for what is was built. Kudos to the skipper and family for letting us have a peek and for sharing their view. It just goes to show once again the Amel is the boat for the long range sailing in a safe and protected environment. Wishing all of you fair winds and fun adventures as you sail around the world. Would love to hear from you again once you have finished you’re first tour of the world.
Thanks..... That's what I also like to see... How the boat's are being used by the owners... What they like, what they don't like....... Most of the tours of boats on RUclips don't show this... Many thanks goes out to Benz and his family showing us a glimpse of their life aboard the Amel 50.
That’s got to be a million dollar boat... it’s gorgeous, and such a lovely family
Probably a wee bit more that a million. But, worth every penny! Fair Winds
About 1.3usd (at least mine fully spec’d is)
What a great video - good to see an Amel 50 in real life conditions (with kids). Much more cosy than I ever anticipated. Such a great boat. Really wondering now what the Amel 60 adds to all this actually. Have fun on your trip!
Sywert van Lienden I ended up ordering the 50 after looking hard at both the 50 and the 60 (I was able to crawl all over hull number one when she was in the tank at their factory). Well the 60 definitely feels more spacious, the total cost of ownership was so much greater than the actual perceived benefit that I decided to go with the 50
The kids always give the most awesome boat tours. Smiling and laughing the whole time
That is SOOO true!
Amazing vessel. Thanks for the awesome tour! You have a great family
What a nice family and.. Boat. Big thanks!
To the captain: Outstandingly fully prepped vessel! Not seen before; what a splendid effort, awesome! (also thank you for filming and put it out here)
Thanks. I like the way you Tell it!
I have just returned from Cabo Verde. Now I think like this man after my first ocean experience! Charter company (Alboran) gave a sailboat without just one watermaker, dinghy's engine hardly functioned ... Great review, my favorite boat right now by YT videos before I enter all pretenders myself!
Great video of a great boat with a nice owner and a lovely family !
Many thanks!
Lovely family, congratulations on your success.
Thanks
Totally amazing setup and everything is so well thought out including the backup systems.
Thank you for making this great detailed video, and also thanks to the wonderful family. Wishing you all the best in life.
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it
The Amel is such a great boat, and I like his concept of first circumnavigating with "training wheels," then he'll do it his own way. Smart, as is the concept of redundancy, if you can afford it, and the time to maintain all those systems. It's difficult enough to maintain single systems, but with redundancy, you are never stuck. I currently have a 50' motor yacht, but I also sail and am considering an older Amel for circumnavigating upon retirement in a few years. Thanks for this excellent video! This is a special channel with lots of great sailing information, and little if any fluff.
I appreciate you taste in RUclips Channels!!

Awesome. Love Niobe as it appears to be a great Boat to do just what this lovely family is doing. Really enjoyed the Video - thank you all
Wonderful tour…I love how the kids led the tour below!
I dream about owning a sailboat and being a live aboard. I completely agree with this owners viewpoint that you don’t always want to be in the sun and wind. In my hometown of San Diego people actually spend more time seeking shade than baking in the sun. Plus when the cold onshore winds blow in the wintertime it just pulls heat out of your body.
It’s fun to get insight into how the Amel functions as an actual comfortable home, not simply a floating structure where the occupants are grinding away month after month.
Well San Diego is the best place to grind the months away. I did it for 30 years, and loved it. I'll be back!
This is a world apart from the cockpit experience of our boat, ha ha. Very nice boat there matey 👌🏻⛵️

awwwww, cute.
Garcia exploration 52 and the Amel 50... Chalk and cheese. It sounds like the right decision was made for this owner... Personally I would love the Garcia or a custom build from K&M 👌🏻

"I like to have two of everything, for safety. You see I have 2 plot charters, 2 water makers. Even 2 dinghies! In fact I take the two of everything philosophy so seriously, that actually bought another Amel 50 to tow behind this one!"
