Avoiding fertilized soil is one of the first things I got right with my VFT, however, now I have a new concerns: white mold. I have a very small sapling planet and, while it has some green to its leaves (I'm assuming it can photosynthesize), there's a fine white, puffy mold that seems to grow on any wet soil/plant. It's too cold to open windows just yet for me other plant and I'm wondering if that mold can sort of slowly kill the tiny plant.
You want to avoid mold as much as possible. It's not an instant kill but isn't good for the plant long term.
I had the same thing happen recently to one of my Venus it sadly didn’t make it I believe it was too most
Will the arizona summer heat kill it outside
It could yes. When hitting peak temps, I might recommend a 30% shade cloth.
Hi. I'd like go get my husband a carnivorous plant for his bday. The nursery has pitcher and venus plants. It would be kept in a well lit room with skylights. Which would you recommend? (He does bonsai.)
I transplanted my venues fly trap in 100% peat moss with no plant food in it I didn't add any perlite in it my venues fly trap is thriving i transplanted it in a bigger wider n taller plastic flower pot siting in a saucer with distilled water outside in the sun I'm slowly learning how to take care of my venues fly trap only thing is not sure if it's ok to keep it outside during the winter when we get colder temperatures in Georgia we will get frost but once the sun comes up the frost melts but it'll be a little cool with the light wind but will be warm if there's no winds n the most it will be is in the 40 ta 50 temperature during the day n cool off at night not sure if I should bring them inside n place them by the window during the winter time?
Nope, they should be okay outside all the time in Georgia. They can survive in pretty cold temps. I've seen them frozen solid and pull through. A little bit of Georgia frost shouldn't hurt then at all.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub if the peat moss freezes where it's frozen all the way will it still be ok sometimes the soil in the pots will freeze solid I have bulb plants on my front porch n in the winter when we get the cold snaps n temperatures if it's cold enough the soil freezes solid not sure if it'll harm my venues fly traps if it does freeze solid
They are fine in freezing temps. As long as it's not prolonged exposure. Like weeks at a time. An occasional freeze is just fine. Just makensure you really pull the water back as it gets colder!
@CarnivorousPlantsHub during the winter can I have it where there's no water till I know that the hard freeze is gone or will that kill the flytraps?
I got a question, dormancy is coming to a end and I’m wondering what to look for? I see abit of green near the dead Venus flytrap leaves but I really can’t tell if it’s the VFT or not. I wish I could show a picture so it could be much easier to explain
If it’s been a harsh winter, Venus flytraps can die back to their root crown, but if the crown is still alive, the plant will grow back in the spring. Even if the root crown seems dead I would still try to grow it again, as their could be white and green inside of the dead outer layer.
It really comes down to conditions. Where is your trap? If it's outside and is now being exposed to more light and warmer temps, it might be coming out of it!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub yeah it’s outside
If it's going to come out of dormancy, it will slowly as the temps warm up and it's exposed to more light.
Thought for sure mine wouldn’t make it through dormancy this winter but they came back better than ever. All of them. I’m absolutely shocked 😅😂
My wife bought me a Venus flytrap and I told my wife to get some Pete Moss and she brought home the miracle grow and now she’s mad at me
Lol.
I use the max sea method once a month . I also use a shade cloth to prevent burning but also so they get the sun they need .
I've never really fertilized consistently but will be this summer. I'll use the maxsea spray bottle method. My sun here isn't harsh enough for shade cloth, maybe a handful of days a year but I know people in Texas or Arizona need the cloths to help.
How do you feed your VFT with max sea?
I just got a Venus flytrap from a nursery last week, and I’ve left it in my garage with the other plants, but the thing is dormancy is almost over, and it seems like the plant was in the nursery for a while, so it didn’t get the needed dormancy. I was wondering the plant will still be healthy if it only has a few weeks of dormancy, or will my plant die?
Typically, a flytrap can skip a dormancy or survive with a partial dormancy. As long as it's not every year. Especially if it's young, a partial dormancy shouldn't really hurt it.
I just start trying to keep fly trap. I have 2 pots at the moment. I know they need sun light and should be keeping out door. I am collecting rain water for them too.
I was told that after the leave caught insect, that leave will turn black and die. Is it true?
Not necessarily if the insect is all the way in the trap then it won’t turn black but if the insect is partially sticking out then it will turn black.
Usually, a trap can catch 3 to 4 insects before dying. That's assuming they are all clean catches. Like stated by Wulfenite, if the trap doesn't seal correctly, it can kill the trap. I have a trap that caught a wasp on a clean seal that is turning black right now. So, there are a lot of factors there.
Just bought one. Never knew there are 6:31 so many varieties. Great information.
Yes! I forget that most people are introduced to them via retail which has limited variations. It gave me a video idea. I think I'll do a video about cultivars and variations! Thanks for the idea!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHublooking forward to it ❤
Osmocote is fine to use. Matze from Green Jaws does it on all of their flytraps
I go over how to properly fertilizer a bit at the end. It's just important you don't use normal fertilizers as you would with most other plants. Especially if you're a beginner grower.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub i know that :)
I use 1/4 maxsea in a gallon of ro water . Then I spray the plants leaves with the solution once a month.
orchid sphagnum blocks from lows work well. no nutes and allow for the roots to stay wet deep but dry up top.
I've used this before, but for Nepenthes. I prefer peat, perlite and crushed glass for my flytraps. I have found that sphagnum just dries out too quickly in the summer. It is a good alternative though, just not my preference.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub indoors sometimes we lack the airflow to dry them out fast enough. Sometimes in certain corners and spots a normally watered plant in just potting soil will stay wet for a week lol. In my place, it calles for the chunky stuff lol.my issue now is nitrogen is being leached from plants to break down the high compost I have so now I need to supplement with double dosing ferts and ti seems to be working and reversing the yellowing. I still think I need to find some 100k lights cause I don't think these are 80k lumens. Sunlight is 100k and this light I have allows things to grow but like...stunted. I need another set to increase intensity overall or I need stronger lumen lights..
