- Renaissance before Annie Haslam!
Back on again... in a better quality!... Enjoy! ;-)
Most of you are probably more familiar with the Renaissance group featuring Annie Haslam as main vocalist instead of the original line-up featuring Keith Relf and Jane Relf as front singers...
In between this transitional stage however, Renaissance had seen a succession of personnel and changes in style over a year or so!..
The line-up shown here, only knew a short existence from November till December 1970.
It consisted of:
Terry Crowe ( backing vocals)
Binky Cullom (lead vocals)
Mike Dunford (guitar)
John Tout (keyboards)
Terry Slade (drums)
Neil Korner (bass guitar)
NB: Here the band is performing an old English Trad song which was not part of the original line-up repertoire!... ;-)

Thank you very much in advance for your understanding!
This has more of the original Renaissance feel then the later incarnations. Very good!
I can't believe that I'm sitting around a campfire with the singer of this band in 2024. She's an angel full of knowledge ✨️ thanks binky.
I saw this on German television in 1971 - and since then I searched for it !!!
REALLY GREAT !!!
But I think there were some more songs?
I WANT THESE TRACKS AS A RECORD !!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
6:40 wow!
Man... I wish I was born in the 60's~70's.
I love this atmosphere!
Gen Z today doesn't realize how miserable they are. That's why they're always angry and protesting.
I loved the blues feeling in the song first time I heard it a year of so ago. I'm a fan of Renaissance since I first heard them on the Colorado University campus at Boulder. They closed with Ashes are Burning. And they had a simple light show. A very good memory/concert.
I can't stop watching this one.
This is available on the "Kings & Queens" DVD, which is well worth the price of admission. The two songs by the original lineup have excellent video and audio quality. The five with this lineup aren't quite as good in terms of the video, but still well worth having.
If Mr. McCarty is still watching this thread, I'm a big fan of the original Renaissance, Illusion, Stairway and Renaissance Illusion. All brilliant.
The 2 disc recording of Jane Relf's music is fantastic! I hope everyone has a chance to listen to it. It includes her work with the first Renaissance line-up, Illusion, Stairway and singles she released. I have no idea of what happened to her, but her album is great and so was her voice.
Thanks. What’s the album called and where can one get it. Great fan of Renaissance here
@phasedin
The guitar run around 6:50 is fantastic. It's like a whole string section eminating from his guitar.
I love any '70 Reanaissance album but my favourite is probaly their first underrated one with the great Louis Cennamo on bass...
Cheers, Caitlyn!
As a matter of fact, materials from Renaissance/ Illusion are playing a substantial part in my solo tour repertoire, these days!
Watching this now with Tout, Dunford and Betty Thatcher having all recently passed away is very profound. Renaissance is one of just a handful of bands that I can say have truly shaped me and my outlook on life. I love Renaissance in all its manifestations. Good old Binky though.. doesn't she rock here :)
+david parkinson It's in the Info section on the RUclips video. (I know, this RUclips/GooglePlus crossover thing confuses the hell out of me too!)
Thank you Grayhen
Thank you - you echo my thoughts. Great group and with each of their songs being a concept album in itself. They were criminally underrated by the popular media. They’ve also had a profound influence on my musical journey
Mike Dunford ended up playing only acoustic guitar because "I knew that I would never be a great guitarist". Well, he held his own in this version of the band, anyway.
... and last but not least... my personal favourite of the set!... ;-)
She's beautiful. Wow.
This stuff is excellent! A true treasure! I've been a fan of the Haslam lineup most of my life. I've heard the early stuff, but after seeing it played live here...I don't know. I might have to change my mind on what is my favorite Renaissance era is.
Be nice if somebody could compile a legit album release. Great stuff from a long-forgotten lineup.
Yes, I must admit, this one stands out! Better than any of the other Ren covers!
Recently bought the first album. Love it!! Looking to get the second album
Wow. I came here looking for quirky versions of Widdecombe Fair and stumbled upon this. Blew me away! I grew up listening to punk, I'd have been appalled by this in the late 70s. We were so blinkered. :(
this is a tremendously cool piece of music history.....was this done for a TV show at the time or did someone splice all the archival footage together years later ? clearly the film has been restored, it looks great!
This was a good line up shame that only all the man with Jane Relf and John Hawken of the original line up only recorded one song on record Mr Pine on Renaissance second record Illusion. I think it would be great in the original line up got back together as Illusion I do love all the line up Renaissance had but there just something of how the original played together and always love the harmonies of Jane Relf and Jim McCarty when they sing together.
i love this freaking band man!!!.got married to silver tightrope from armaeddon.., and really never knew of them until recently..fan of arm. since 1976.....woaaaaa!...
Binky Cullom una diosa del rock
There's MICKY DUNFORD, having a go!
Micky, then John, Annie, Terry and Jon Camp....quite a legacy starting from KIETH RELF, 1969, through Annie with Renaissance, still active and touring later in 2017 !!!
They don't make music like tis anymore. Great!
Check out the Nashville Teens version of this song. Also Good
Chega viajei com essa música do Renaissance, a Binky lindona.
freeking amazing. Steeleye span meets The Animals ...
It's Renaissance being Renaissance. Anything else is your problem.
Awesome this is a really good band
The best one of the lot, I agree! And ironically, not related to Renaissance at all!...;-)
Wow. This video is just fantastic.
Looks like theyre having a lot of fun on stage!
Binky Cullom could have gone to Hollywood. Gorgeous lady.
My oh my I see some these comments are nearly 9 years ago. Forgive my ignorance but are renaissance an English band..I've yet see a live folk concert the first track I heard from renaissance was there top 40 hit single NORTHERN LIGHTS became my favourite tune.WONDERFULL SONG.
A real powerful of Life
I've listened to all their albums & i love the initiall line-up as well. But with Ann's appearing they have reached another dimension.
And a hell of a jam to boot.
Two bass players.
Fantastic. If I remember right you don't like to fly much so I guess dates here in Texas are out of the question :( I'd definitely buy a ticket or three if you were somewhere near here.
@MrTylerSlade
Oh wow, so that is what happened to Binky, she married Terry. True, members come and go, but it adds a little mystery when there is significant video footage of an obscure member and next to no information on them.
Musica composta in passato dai Nashville teen e riproposta con vero genio dai renaissance
great band !!!
grateful for the music !!!!!
What a lovely surprise this is. Just noticed how similar in looks the young Michael Dunford was to Nick Drake. RIP Both of them
Incrível como essa música é tão atual … essa Binky Cullom. gorgeous!!!
Fantastic. This is an amazing clip. The quality is perfect!
6.50-8.00 amazing guitar sound!!!
If I am not mistaken, they are revealing their Nashville Teens lineage here. I would be a kin to Ren Mk I performing "For Your Love" or "Shapes of Things" which would have been interesting if that actually happened.
Correct. This song was part of the Teens' repertoire.
This is fucking amazing!
Too fucking good
beautful songs
Jim, do you tour under your name or something else? I want to add you to my Pollstar list in case you tour Florida. I’ve been following you and your bandmates since ‘64 & I give the Yardbirds credit (along w/ Dylan) for inspiring almost everything good that happened in rock since. Then, as if that wasn't enough of a legacy, you and Keith took it to the next level and launched fully formed prog rock (as did King Crimson the same year). Renaissance remains among the very best. Thanks!
A bit of a mis-mosh of video clips since Neil is shown playing a Fender Tele bass ( at one time known as a Precision very early on ) and then for most of the video is playing what appears to be a Guild Starfire bass. That said, its a great song, of course with no real Renaissance connect musically other than some members.
I can't believe my eyes.
Excellent guys
I think the transitional line-up is the best line up
Very cool!
Awesome
@MrTylerSlade Is she of European origin? French, Belgian or Swiss by any chance? ;-)
@MrTylerSlade Is your mum real name: Anne-Marie by any chance? ;-)
Same here. freakin' awesome!!
CLASSIC!
THANKS FOR THE POST!
She very pretty. They had a driving sound. Lucky you to be child of musician parents.
This was part of the Nashville Teens' repetoire, so I assume Crowe and Dunford brought this to the band.

NICE!!
@trfesok I wouldn't agree more! ;-)
бля, да это просто бомба!! как Она сходит с ума!! вах, красава
WOW! Groovers groovin! LOVED it! x
So very special not knowing too much of this line-up who are the people involved?
So you have a line up of Renaissance touring to support an album they, for the most part, did not play on performing material they recorded when they were still the Nashville Teens, a band that still existed at the time with a different line up. Does anyone grasp the absurdity of this.
Grasping the absurdity is a good way of putting it; I can certainly relate to that. In fact this whole alternative Renaissance universe thing is starting to freak me out. Having been into the standard Annie H. stuff for quite a long time, I now find myself heavily drawn towards the much spookier Jane Relf era and even to this bizarre transitional phase. I also just bought both of the Illusion albums and they are truly fantastic; Jane has become my all-time best female singer (and what a Fox she was, too..) But this transitional stuff is so weird to see and hear, or even get your head around...
By the way, I never imagined the Nashville Teens had previously recorded a version of this song, but at least that much adds up now, thanks!
Well, to add even more confusion, the later version of the Nashville Teens in 1971 recorded the Roy Wood song "Ella James" a year before Wood recorded it with the Move. Roy Wood was married to Annie Haslam in the mid 1970's.
For years no one knew where Binky Cullom came from or ended up. Now with the magic of the internet it turns out she married drummer Terry Slade and currently runs a massage parlor somewhere in England.
thatmuse76
That's interesting; and after this it wouldn't surprise me to find out Renaissance did an early take of The Battle of Marston Moor 1644!
I wonder was there ever another high profile band that changed so completely, got away with it, and then came back to haunt itself the way Renaissance did? Even the various versions of Hawkwind always had Dave Brock in them; each of the Strawbs line-ups always had Dave Cousins...
I believe there was a kind of "ghost" version of Judas Priest where the original members were none of the classic band, but they'd never released an album in the first place and they didn't later regroup under a different name as far as I know. I find this fairly unique aspect of Renaissance quite fascinating: they should have their own Pete Frame Family Tree, but it would probably be off the scale!
Well there is a lot of confusion in the whole Amon Duul, Amon Duul II and Amon Duul UK camp. There is also the German band the Rattles that had some pretty significant line up changes to the point that all that survived was the name. I would also throw Fleetwood Mac in there as well since, while they did keep the members in which the band was named, they changed out the "writing" members of the band which contributed to their sound changing quite drastically.
That's inaccurate. This transitional RENAISSANCE, with MICKY DUNFORD, was the band between the KEITH RELF, and the Annie Haslam version of the band. John Hawken, the original Renaissance keyboardist WAS from the Nashville Teens, but left them to join Renaissance, in 1969. Hawken has also played in 2 STRAWBS line-ups, in the '70's and early 2000's.
John Wetton was also briefly in Renaissance for about a week, before moving on to KING CRIMSON, giving JON CAMP, the opportunity to join, in 1972 ....Changes, and more changes!
@SokobanJr ...I was born in 60and I was very crazieeeeeeee...huhuuuuuuu !....maybe i´m yet! ahahahahaa....
woman -
super super super crazieeeeee
I thought Keith rely founded this band, why isn't here here? Anyways, loving this video so far.
+Prog Hog 513 He died. Accident on stage I think with his electric guitar.
Yes he died of electrocution but 5 years later
This was years before Keith Relf died. This version of Renaissance existed for only a few months in 1970. Keith Relf has already left and had been replaced by Michael Dunford on guitar and Terry Crowe on vocals. They keyboardist on this is John Tout, who would also be part of the classic lineup.
Sounds more like Fairport Convention than Renaissance. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
My favorite is Kings and Queens in a video made at Beat Club
Nient'altro !!!!!!
Man, these were the dayz!~...before, punk, before prog rock, before big - hair music, before "metal".......I read somewhere that the musicians actually played their instruments!!...fancy that!
It's true, they did! I was there to witness it many, many times.
who is Binky?
old friends and new will contact you terry as i have to remind you about George hatchet in north Carolina. bless you and all, find you soon.mitch
Reminds me more of Fairport Convention than Renaissance. Not that that's a bad thing!
Are all these songs are in an album?
All are on the first two Renaissance albums except for this one.
They sound more like Fleetwood Mac of 1970 then Renaissance.
"Thank you all the heads raaaa!"
that girl going crazy is Annie?
No, Binky Cullom who was in the band in between Jane Relf and Annie Haslam.
IS THIS ON ANY ALBUM?
What a strange history this band has. Three almost entirely different lineups, just keeping the same name.
This line up sound better than the following line up and, dare I say it,more exciting than the preceding one.I wonder why they dissolved.
this is the iteration I gravitate towards
They were unhappy with Binky. After Annie joined, various bassists rotated in and out of the group over the next year, until management decided to keep Annie & John, retain Dunford as songwriter and arranger, and fire everybody else.
I love this incarnation! Read my article about it :

Just found it
Very unusual to see/hear Mike Dunford playing psychedelic electric guitar...and who is the woman whose face appears at 3:07?
Betty Thatcher-Newsinger, at 3:07. She was the band’s lyricist during the transitional lineup.

essa mulher não é anne haslan, essa é jane half .. vc ta errado nos componentes da banda
That’s not Jane. The name of the woman in this video is Binky Cullom.
Binky does better vocals
Ammazza, la robba era proprio bbona, eh? (very good shit, wasn't it?) però cheppalle 9 minuti così (boring)
I was a kid in the 60's - this sort of stuff really got on my nerves... Nothing changes....
this is not renaissance, no relf's
Relf produced and McCarty composed. Tout played and Dunford played and composed. what else? it's renaissance for shure!
@@joseaugustoamorim *No Annie Haslam No Renaissance!*

The singer actually looks like Binky cullom to me not Jane relf
