I've heard a theory that tom actually is in hell since that episode but his hell is failing every time to catch Jerry and hurting himself in the process.
Tom was intentionaly the "bad guy" to save jerry If tom was more compitent at his job he would kill jerry, If tom was more incompitent at his job he would be replaced with a more compitent cat that would kill jerry, Poor tom was constantly berated and asaulted by his owner and also his only good friend and he cant tell jerry that tom isnt trying to hurt him or jerry would take advantage of his genorosity. He is basicaly stuck in hell with an owner that doesn't treat him well, a neighbour that hates him for being a cat, a "friend" that cant know they are friends, and his other best "friend" is a cat gang bully leader who would sell and frame tom in a heartbeat to save his skin, and in addition he is rejected from heaven because he is missunderstood by God or whoever judges his soul. His life is torture already and he still thinks he would go to hell because he isn't doing enough to redeem his (pure) soul. I have never seen a character who thinks so little of himself yet goes through hell for others that don't appreciate him.
